The last four weeks featured three home games and a road contest at Gannon. The stretch was capped by a 49 39 upset of 17th ranked Slippery Rock last Saturday. That boosted the Fighting Scots to 5 3 overall and 3 2 in the PSAC West and gave them a two game winning streak. } The win over Slippery Rock kept Edinboro undefeated at home at 5 0 with one game remaining against California(Pa.) on November 4. However, the Fighting Scots have yet to pick up a road win, losing at West Chester, Indiana(Pa.), and Gannon. The Fighting Scots have outscored their opponents at home 169 80. The story has been a bit different on the road, with Edinboro being outscored 147 60. } The Fighting Scots were picked to finish fourth in the PSAC West. Edinboro opened the season with back to back wins at Sox Harrison Stadium, defeating Lake Erie (30 3) and Lock Haven (20 3). Their next two games came on the road against the two preseason favorites in the PSAC. Edinboro suffered a 62 28 loss at West Chester, the Eastern Division favorite, followed by a 38 7 setback at then sixth ranked and PSAC West preseason favorite Indiana(Pa.) in the PSAC West opener. They snapped their two game losing skid with a 45 10 win over Clarion to end September, but began October with a 47 25 loss at Gannon. Edinboro celebrated Homecoming with a 28 25 win over Mercyhurst on October 14. } Seton Hill was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC Western Division after finishing at 5 6 in 2016. The Griffins have struggled in 2017, currently sitting at 0 8. However, Seton Hill has always given Edinboro trouble with its outstanding passing game. Senior QB Christian Strong ranks second in the PSAC and seventh in Division II in passing yards with 2,347. } Turnovers and struggles on the defensive side of the ball have been the nemesis of the Griffins. Seton Hill ranks last in Division II in total defense, allowing 550.8 yards per game, and are 15th in the PSAC and 165th (out of 168 teams) in scoring defense (50.0 ppg.). The Griffins are also last in the country in turnover margin at 2.75. Seton Hill has turned the ball over 26 times while forcing just four turnovers. } The Edinboro Seton Hill game features two of the top active passers in Division II. Seton Hill s Christian Strong ranks seventh among active Division II passers with 8,678 yards, with 59 TDs. Jake Sisson of Edinboro has 7,529 career yards and 73 TDs. He ranks 11th among active Division II passers. } Wayne Bradford is in his first season as Edinboro s interim head coach. He was on the Edinboro staff for 18 years, most of that as the defensive coordinator, before assuming the head coach responsibilities. } Bradford took over for Justin Lustig, who was Edinboro s head coach for just a year. Along the way he became the first Edinboro rusher to top the 1,000 yard mark in a season since 2004. SRU closed to 28 24 early in the third quarter, but Edinboro answered with a pair of Fletcher touchdown runs, the first covering seven yards, and the second one a scintillating 98 yarder. Bradford worked under four different head coaches and was an assistant at Edinboro for 18 years before taking over as the interim head coach. He has spent a majority of his time as the Fighting Scots defensive coordinator. Bradford has master minded some brilliant defensive performances over the years in a day and age when offense has taken over. For instance, in 2011 the Fighting Scots ranked eighth in Division II in scoring defense (17.0 ppg.), 11th in pass efficiency defense, and 18th in total defense (292.6 ypg.). Edinboro gave up fewer than 20 points in seven of its 11 games. A year ago, his Edinboro defense finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks. Edinboro finished the 2016 campaign with a 9 2 record, marking the fifth time an Edinboro team with Bradford on the staff tied the school record for victories (9). Three of Edinboro s teams during his tenure have reached the NCAA playoffs, including the 2009 team, which finished at 9 4 and reached the Super Region One semifinals. All told, he has been a part of 114 wins, including his first as a head coach against Lake Erie. } Isaac Collins (Rochester 94) is in his fifth season as the head coach at Seton Hill. He took over the Griffins program after serving as the head coach at Widener the previous three years. He has a 12 40 record at Seton Hill and is 37 48 in his eighth year as a head coach. Collins led Widener to the 2012 Mid American Conference championship with an 11 1 record. The Pride won the ECAC Atlantic South Bowl Championship. He was recognized as the 2012 MAC Coach of the Year. He compiled a 25 8 record during his three seasons, including a No. 8 ranking in the AFCA Division III Top 25. From 2006 09, he served as the defensive coordinator for The Citadel. His 2007 defense led the Southern Conference in total defense. He has also served as an assistant coach at Delaware, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Columbia and Hobart. BORO BITS Fletcher First Fighting Scot to Rush for1,000 Yards in a Season Since 2004 Walter Fletcher is in the midst of one of the top rushing seasons at Edinboro in many years. The redshirt sophomore has run off four straight 100 yard games, including 241 yards and 4 TDs against Slippery Rock last Saturday, and now has 1,199 yards this season. He is the first Fighting Scot to rush for 1,000 yards in a season since Andre Burke set an Edinboro record with 1,713 yards in 2004. Game 9 -- Edinboro at Seton Hill } Ryan Stratton Named to 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team Ryan Stratton knows where he will be on New Year s Day. The senior tight end will be attending the Sugar Bowl game. Not only will he be attending, he will be part of the proceedings. Stratton was one of 22 players named to the elite 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The award spotlights the incredible stories of selflessness and community service displayed by the 22 student athletes and honorary head coach, and honors their dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player had to be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing. For Stratton, those deeds are too many to mention, but include the creation of the 12th Man and going to the Dominican Republic last winter on a missionary trip. The Good Works Team award is one of the most coveted offthe filed honors in college football. The voting panel consisted of former Good Works Team members including two time national champion, Heisman Trophy winner and 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team member Tim Tebow and prominent college football media members. The committee narrowed down 146 nominees from NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA schools to the final 22 student athletes plus honorary head coach. games was also in 2004, when Burke did it in six straight contests. It marked the first time that two receivers had 100 yards receiving since the final game of the 2016 season, when Clark and Jordan Williams accomplished the fete against Cheyney. Clark has five 100 yard receiving games this season and ten for his career, while it marked Gregory s second in 2017 and the fifth of his career. Secondary Working Overtime Edinboro s top five tacklers are all defensive backs, and the leading tackler each week but one has been a member of the secondary. Strong safety Brandon Anderson leads the Fighting Scots with 79 tackles, followed by free safety DeVon Groves with 58. Cornerbacks Aaron Rogers and Zuril Hendrick have 53 and 47, respectively. Maurice Sims, the team s nickel back, has moved into the fifth spot after finishing with a team high 11 tackles vs. Slippery Rock to give him 42 for the season. Groves led Edinboro with 11 tackles vs. Lake Erie, and Anderson had 19 stops vs. Lock Haven. Hendrick led the Fighting Scots in tackles the next two weeks with nine at West Chester and eight at IUP. Anderson had a teamhigh 10 stops vs. Clarion and 14 at Gannon. Linebacker Trey Hall finally snapped the string of defensive backs leading the team in tackles as he totaled 11 stops vs. Mercyhurst. Oh Those Yellow Hankies Penalties were plentiful in the Slippery Rock game. Edinboro was whistled for 13 penalties for 109 yards, while SRU had 10 penalties for 108 yards. Offensive Line is Stingy on Sacks The Edinboro offensive line finally saw its streak of not allowing a sack come to an end against Gannon. The offensive line did not allow a sack against Indiana(Pa.) and Clarion, and had a streak of 94 straight passes without a sack end 2017 EDINBORO FOOTBALL GAME NOTES against Gannon. The Fighting Scots have still allowed just six sacks while passing the ball 303 times after holding a Slippery Rock team that ranked among the national leaders without a sack. The unit ranks second in the PSAC and 111th in Division II in fewest sacks allowed. The offensive line has been comprised of Trey Staunch at right tackle, Dante Rizzo at right guard, Vitaliy Gurman at center, RJ Hughes at left guard, and Alex Molik at left tackle. Oddly enough, this week s opponent, Seton Hill, has allowed just four sacks. The Griffins rank first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II. Tomko Makes First Career Start at QB Quarterback Andrew Tomko came to Edinboro a year ago with an impressive resume after a record breaking high school career at Sharon High School. Tomko got his first chance at extensive action two weeks ago at Gannon when Jake Sisson went down with an injury. He made his first career start last week on Homecoming vs. Mercyhurst. While the numbers weren t overwhelming (7 of 16 passing for 52 yards, 33 yards rushing), the 6 5, 215 lb. redshirt freshman scored on a pair of three yard runs and led Edinboro to a 28 25 win. Four Fighting Scots Inducted into Hall of Fame Nine individuals were inducted into the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, October 13. Edinboro has committed 28 turnovers this season, more than they committed the entire 2016 campaign. Against Mercyhurst, it was turnovers that paved the way for a 28 25 victory. Edinboro won the turnover battle for the first time since the opening game, with three Mercyhurst fumbles leading to three short drives for touchdowns. Offensive Tackle Also on Hands Team When Mercyhurst scored with just under three minutes to play to pull to within 28 25, and with the Lakers owning just one timeout, an onside kick was in order. Along the front line for Edinboro, running backs, wide receivers, and defensive backs. And an offensive tackle! Trey Staunch was part of the hands unit, and of course the ball went straight to him. The former standout high school quarterback calmly fielded the ball and Edinboro went on to run out the clock. Clark Posts Big Effort in Return Home James Clark hauled in a career best 12 passes for 104 yards and 3 TDs at West Chester. The game marked a homecoming for the junior wide receiver, who played at nearby Coatesville High School. He enjoyed his seventh career 100 yard receiving game. The three touchdown receptions covering 1, 12, and 9 yards tied the school record set on numerous occasions, most recently by Alex Caratelli at Gannon in 2015. He caught one pass for 11 yards. The redshirt freshman saw his first extensive action at quarterback against Gannon when Jake Sisson went down with an injury midway through the second quarter. He would complete 9 of 19 passes for 90 yards with an interception. Tomko was a record setting quarterback at Sharon High School. He made his first career appearance at quarterback at IUP. Fighting Scots Block Pair of Kicks at Gannon One of the bright spots of the loss at Gannon was a pair of blocked kicks. Zuril Hendrick blocked a 37 yard field goal in the fourth quarter, and Nick Pettigrew added a blocked extra point later in the quarter. Sisson Makes it Two Years in a Row with TD Grab vs. Clarion Quarterback Jake Sisson has now caught a touchdown pass two years in a row against Clarion. On Saturday, he hauled in a nine yard touchdown pass from Ta Nauz Gregory. A year ago, it was Alex Caratelli throwing a 16 yard scoring pass to Sisson. Boro Overcomes First Quarter Blues Edinboro had been outscored 41 3 in the first quarter in the first four games, but it was the Fighting Scots who got off to the fast start against Clarion. Edinboro jumped to a 21 3 lead after one period. The Fighting Scots had gone scoreless the last three games in the first quarter. Scots Sizzle on Third Down vs. Clarion Edinboro converted an incredible 10 of 12 third down plays after coming into the game ranked 14th in the PSAC at 32.2 percent. Defense Makes Its Mark vs. Clarion While Edinboro s offense accounted for a seasonhigh 459 total yards, the defense held Clarion to 250 yards, the best defensive performance of the year. The Boro defense came up with two turnovers and three sacks, along with several key stops. In addition to holding Clarion to just a field goal following back to back fumbles on kickoff returns, the Edinboro defense put together a goal line stand in the second quarter. On 4th and goal from the one, Kyle Evans was thrown for a oneyard loss by David Ballew III and Derek Dorr. Zuril Hendrick put six points on the board for the defense with a 35 yard interception return for a touchdown. Dowdell Makes First Start at Wide Receiver Andre Dowdell, a transfer from St. Francis(Pa.), made his first career start at wide receiver at West Chester. The redshirt sophomore finished with 5 receptions for 38 yards.

Game 9 - Edinboro at Seton Hill Scoring Defense Takes a Hit vs. West Chester The Edinboro defense ranked first in Division II in scoring defense entering the West Chester game after giving up just a field goal to both Lake Erie and Lock Haven. The Fighting Scots have dropped back to sixth in the PSAC in scoring defense after West Chester scored 62 points, although two of the scores came on an interception return and a blocked punt return. West Chester s 62 points were the most since the 84 63 loss at West Liberty in 2009 in the NCAA playoffs. It is the fifth highest total ever against Edinboro. WCU s 27 points in the first quarter tied the school record by an opponent previously set by Baldwin Wallace in 1966, and the 48 points at halftime is a new record by an opponent. Long Plays Contribute to Long Day at West Chester Edinboro had allowed just four plays of 25 or more yards from scrimmage in their first two games, but West Chester had five plays of 25 yards or more. All resulted in touchdowns. Defense Holds Back-to-Back Opponents Without Touchdown for First Time Since 2008 The Edinboro defense has yet to give up a touchdown in 2016, allowing just a field goal to Lake Erie and Lock Haven. This marks the first time Edinboro has held back to back opponents without a touchdown since the 2008 season. Bischof Enjoys Memorable Day in First Start Freshman linebacker Ryan Bischof enjoyed an impressive game against Lock Haven in his first career start. Filling in for injured Trey Hall at mike linebacker, Bischof recorded eight tackles, including a tackle for a loss. he made one of the most important plays of the game on defense when he made a diving interception of a pass at the Edinboro 4 yard line to stop a Lock Haven drive. It was his first career interception. Gregory Picks Up Where He Left Off in 2017 Following an outstanding freshman season with numerous honors, Ta'Nauz Gregory was named to the Lindy s Sports 2017 Preseason All Division II Starting Lineup. He was named the 2016 Don Hansen NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year and was also named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. Gregory got off to a great start against Lake Erie, finishing with 7 receptions for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Both of his scores showed his electric ability to score from anywhere on the field. His TD grabs of 32 and 34 yards were finished off by Gregory sprinting over 20 yards for the score. Gregory now has four 100 yard receiving games. Williams spent the 2016 season redshirting at West Virginia. He made his first career start for the Fighting Scots against Lock Haven and finished with 3 receptions for 31 yards. He joins 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year Ta Nauz Gregory, a former teammate with the Ramblers, as part of the starting wideouts. Cushma Kicks First Career Field Goal One of the biggest roles to fill coming into the 2017 season was the placekicking chores handled by Austin Reese the previous two seasons. Redshirt sophomore Mike Cushma won the competition in the preseason, and last Saturday he stepped in and made his first career field goal attempt. The 26 yarder gave Edinboro a 3 0 lead. Cushma made 3 of 4 extra points, with the fourth disrupted by a bad snap. In addition, three of his six kickoffs were touchbacks. Sisson Does Double Duty as Punter Jake Sisson threw for 258 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the season opener vs. Lake Erie. In addition, the senior was called on to punt seven times, averaging 40.7 yards. Bradford Debuts as 15th Edinboro Coach with Victory Wayne Bradford officially became the 15th head football coach at Edinboro last Saturday against Lake Erie, and he made it a victorious debut. He replaced Justin Lustig, who left after one season to accept an assistant coaching position at Syracuse. Tom Hollman holds the record for career victories with 78, while Sox Harrison holds the standard for years as head coach at 15 years. Game 9 - Edinboro at Seton Hill ceptions for 2,100 yards and 22 TDs. Edinboro in Season Openers The Fighting Scots own a 40 44 5 all time record in season openers following the 30 3 win over Lake Erie. Edinboro saw its four game winning streak in season openers snapped in 2012 with a 30 14 loss at Bloomsburg, but the Scots came back with a 35 34 win at Walsh in 2013. They fell at Carson Newman, 38 24, in 2014, and opened 2015 with a 30 10 loss to Saint Joseph s. A year ago, they edged Saint Joseph s, 31 30, on the road. Reddick Returns After Missing 16 with Injury As a prepster, Blake Reddick was a record setting running back at nearby Lakeview High School. He saw time as a defensive back as a freshman, and has since been moved to wide receiver. Reddick missed the 2016 season with a knee injury. Last Saturday, he made his first career start at wide receiver, although he did have five starts on defense in 2014. He caught 2 passes for 41 yards, including an acrobatic 35 yarder as he was being dragged down by a defender. Pass interference was called on the defender, but it didn t matter because Reddick caught the ball. Boro Ranked in Several Preseason Polls Coming off a 9 2 finish in 2016, Edinboro was ranked in several preseason polls. The summer began with the Fighting Scots picked 16th in the Street and Smith s Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll. Next came a ranking of 30th in the College Football America 2017 Yearbook Division II Preseason Top 30. The AFCA released its 2017 AFCA Division II Preseason Coaches' Top 25 Poll on August 14, with defending national champion Northwest Missouri State ranked number one. While failing to land a spot in the top 25, Edinboro is one of the top teams among others receiving votes. The Fighting Scots received 57 votes after ending the 2016 season among "others receiving votes", as well. Edinboro vs. the GMAC Officially, Edinboro had never played a game against a team from one of the newest Division II conferences, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. That isn t necessarily true, however, since Edinboro did face Walsh when the Cavaliers were members of the GLIAC. That meeting came in 2013, and is the last time an Edinboro edition faced a current member of the GMAC. Lake Erie is in its first year in the conference after also previously playing in the GLIAC. Edinboro claimed a 30 3 win in the first meeting between the two teams. Gregory Receives Pair of Preseason Accolades Following an outstanding freshman season with numerous honors, Ta'Nauz Gregory was named to the Lindy s Sports 2017 Preseason All Division II Starting Lineup. He was named to the second team as an all purpose player. In addition, he was named to the College Football America 2017 Yearbook Division II Starting Lineup as a kick returner. Gregory was named the 2016 Don Hansen NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year and was also named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. He made his mark both as a kick returner and receiver. He set the school record for kickoff return average at 32.5 yards on 23 returns, with a 96 yard return for a touchdown against Clarion, and another for 85 yards against Slippery Rock. He ranked first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in kickoff return average. His two returns for touchdowns led Division II. Gregory added a 70 yard punt return for a touchdown to his resume' against Cheyney. He averaged 11.7 yards on 12 punt returns, ranking third all time at Edinboro. As a receiver, Gregory finished second on the team in receptions (63), which ranks fifth in a season, for 808 yards with 8 TDs. Sisson Enjoys Record-Breaking Season Jake Sisson will once again be at the controls of Edinboro s high flying offense. The senior is in his third year as a starter and comes off a recordbreaking campaign. He entered his senior season ranked fourth in career touchdown passes (58) and career completions (487), and fifth in career passing yards (5,900), career total offense (6,246) and career attempts (876). A year ago, he shattered many of the game and season records previously set by Trevor Harris. Sisson was named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette Super Region One third team after setting school records with 3,710 yards passing and 41 TDs. He completed 294 of 531 passes, setting Edinboro season records for attempts, completions, yards passing, touchdowns, and total offense. The passing touchdowns are tied for fourth all time in the PSAC, while his 46 TDs responsible for is third. He did not play in 2014, then returned in 2015. He played some quarterback and some tight end before flipping to defensive end later in the year. Now 6 5, 260 lbs., Girvin started all 11 games a year ago, finishing with 29 tackles, including 5 sacks. After a brief rest, he joined the men s basketball team and carved out a significant role in the frontcourt as the year went on. Girvin would play in 18 games, with 16 starts, averaging 3.7 ppg., and a team high 5.8 rpg. while playing just under 20 minutes per contest. THE MATCHUP -- EDINBORO FIGHTING SCOTS vs. SETON HILL GRIFFINS SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS Seton Hill comes in with a 0 8 record and a very dangerous offense.
