WE OBJECT, YOUR HONOR The Rays played Saturday s game at TOR under protest following a 3rd-inning instant replay challenge by Jays Manager John Gibbons the decision by MLB is still pending Gibbons challenged the safe call at 1B on a Mark Buehrle pickoff attempt of Wil Myers, and the call was overturned Rays Manager Joe Maddon contended that Gibbons challenged the play too late, as Buehrle was already on the rubber and Yunel Escobar in the batter s box at the time it is the 10th protest that went to court (protesting team lost) in the past decade (2005-14) it is believed to be the fourth Rays game played under protest, but the first to go to court as the Devil Rays won all 3 prev. games (April 4, 1998 vs. CWS; May 31, 2000 vs. BAL; and July 1, 2003 vs. BOS) in the 2000 game vs. BAL, umpires reversed the last out of the ballgame saying that 1B Fred McGriff s foot came off the bag and B.J. Surhoff was safe John Shulock s crew ordered the Rays back on the field, which drew a protest from Larry Rothschild 13 minutes later, play was resumed, and Roberto Hernandez later fanned Brady Anderson to end the game (Rays won 4-3, protest dropped). This past Tuessday, the Giants protest of their game at Chicago-NL became the first protest upheld since June 16, 1986, when the Pirates protested that the Cardinals called the game prematurely due to rain.
