BCBUA Superclinic 2009 Instructor Bio s Lead Instructor: Dick Runchey Detroit, Michigan USA (Note: This bio was prepared by staff at a high level umpire clinic in the United States) Dick may be the most respected umpire in the world among college and international baseball umpires, coaches, and administrators. Dick attended Somers Umpire School and worked in the minor leagues, while also instructing at the school. After his stint in the minor leagues, he had what most would consider a premier collegiate umpiring career, working in the Big Ten and Mid-American Conferences. During his 20+ seasons in college baseball he worked countless Big Ten and Mid-American Conference Tournaments, 19 NCAA Division I Regional Tournaments, and five College World Series. He was selected to work the plate in four different NCAA College World Series National Championship Games. In 2002 Dick was inducted into the Amateur Baseball Umpires Association (ABUA) Hall of Fame. He is currently Executive Director of the ABUA. Throughout his time in college baseball, Dick also gained international respect and prominence and was assigned to work the USA/Japan series, Pan American Games, World Championships, and Olympic Games. He has served as a Regional Evaluator for the NCAA Umpire Program, Umpire Evaluator for the Collegiate Baseball Umpires Alliance, and President of the Amateur Baseball Umpires Association. In 2007 he was named as one of three Regional Advisors for the NCAA National Umpire Program. Dick is in constant demand as a clinician and has taught at umpire camps throughout the United States and in many foreign countries. Dick is currently Director of Umpires for the International Baseball Federation. He selects, supervises, and oversees the training and evaluation of umpires at all senior and junior level international tournaments throughout the world. Dick also worked as a substitute umpire in professional baseball on numerous occasions, not the least of which was the 1984 American League Playoffs. Special Guest Instructor: Ian Lamplugh Victoria, BC Ian is BC s most heralded umpire. He has worked in over 200 Major League games over a 3 year period of time. Ian broke into the Bigs in 2000 after several years in Minor Pro ball. Ian umpired the Pacific Coast League finals in 1998 between Edmonton and Salt Lake. After his days in the Big Leagues, Ian served for 3 years as the Umpire in Chief for the Taiwan Professional Baseball League. He also worked in the Dominican Winter League and umpired in the Caribbean World Series. Following his appearance in the Majors, BC Minor Baseball, in conjunction with BCBUA, created an annual award to recognize the top umpire prospect in BC which is called the Ian Lamplugh Award. The award was founded in 2002. Several of our clinic instructors have been named recipients of this prestigious award.
Special Guest Instructor: Corrie Davis Edmonton, Alberta Corrie was recently elected as the Baseball Canada National Supervisor of Umpires. Corrie boasts 25 years of umpiring with over 3000 games to his credit. He has umpired at the National level for 15 years during which time he has worked 7 National championships as an umpire and 3 as a Supervisor. Corrie has also umpired in 4 International tournaments and World Championships: -2000 World Jr. Championships in Edmonton -2002 World Juniors in Quebec -2005 COPABE World Junior Qualifier in Mexico -2007 World Cup of Baseball in Taiwan A veteran of over 200 Minor Professional League games (Pacific Coast League, Canadian Baseball League, Pioneer League, Northern League, Golden Baseball League) Corrie was recently selected to represent Canada at the upcoming World Baseball Classic sponsored by Major League Baseball. It should come as no surprise that Corrie has won his share of awards for his on-field excellent, not the least of which was the Baseball Canada Umpire of the Year in 2005. Brian has long since been recognized as one of the most versatile and effective instructors in BC and more recently in Canada. Brian s ability to teach has made him an imperative contributor to Superclinic in BC for many years. In addition to teaching, Brian has always been recognized as a top mentor in BC, having molded youth umpires in the Kamloops area in particular. We are again pleased to have Brian part of our staff. Troy continues to be a contributor to the development of BCBUA programs despite many other commitments within the baseball community. Troy is the most well respected instructor in the Little League BC program including serving as the Provincial Supervisor from 2000-2006. Don s recent umpiring activities have been somewhat limited, however he continues to be a major contributor off the field and we are very pleased to welcome him back to this year s Superclinic. Bill MacMillan Trail, BC 18 years of umpiring experience 4 National Championships 12 years BCBUA Instructor Baseball Canada Jr Course Conductor 15 years on BCBUA Board of Directors (BCBUA Level 3 co-ordinator) BCBUA Awards: George Connelly Builders Award, Doug Hudlin Award for Distinguished Service to BCBUA. Bill has long been a fixture of Trail, BC s City of Champions where he helped build the minor baseball umpiring program. Bill has been a board member and major contributor to umpiring in BC off the field. This is the first opportunity Bill has had to instruct at Superclinic and we offer a heartfelt welcome to him.
Fabian Poulin Nanaimo, BC 27 years umpiring experience 7 National Championships 18 year veteran of Baseball Canada program 16 years BCBUA Instructor Baseball Canada Sr. Course Conductor BCBUA awards: 2003 - Most Improved Umpire, 2005 - George Connelly Builders Award, 2007 BCBUA Umpire of the Year. Fabian is a veteran of BCBUA and Baseball Canada programs. A long standing member of the umpiring community in Nanaimo, Fabian has been instrumental in working in that area for the betterment of baseball and the BCBUA. Fabian was an instructor at Superclinic in 2006 in Nanaimo and we welcome him again to this year s clinic.
