Coach Rob Smith, beginning his 14th season, has won 89 games at Western, making him the winningest coach in school history. A deep receiving corps leads the offense. Senior Greg Dykstra had 57 catches for 919 yards and 10 touchdowns and junior Ryan Van Diest added 31 receptions for 539 yards and 5 scores. They re joined by senior Mike Westbrook, a transfer from Montana, who started as a true freshman at Brigham Young. The top three running backs return, including senior Devin Martin, who ran for a team-high 583 yards and 4 touchdowns, and junior Nyle Chambers, who ran for 567 yards and 5 touchdowns and caught 21 passes for 241 yards and 2 scores. Three starters return on the offensive line, led by senior tackle Joaquin Paratore-McNabb. The open spot is quarterback, as Harlon Hill finalist Scott Mitchell graduated. Sophomore Steve Nichols, who threw for 175 yards in 2001 and junior Josh Shimek are competing for the starting nod. On defense, Western is strong at cornerback, as senior Martez Johnson, who defensed 15 passes last year, has started for three seasons and senior Anthony Dalton had a team-high 4 interceptions last season. Junior Lann Olson enters his third year as the starting middle linebacker and senior end Corey Gunnerson had a team-high 7 quarterback sacks last season. Sophomore kicker Michael Koenen was brilliant as a freshman, hitting 13-of-20 field goals, including a school-record 54 yarder, and averaging 40.8 yards a punt, with three efforts of 62 yards or better.
