July 2007 NO. 0707 UPDATE FOR TEX-207-F, EFFECTIVE MAY 2007 Tex-207-F, Determining Density of Compacted Bituminous Mixtures. is now on-line at the TxDOT website. This test procedure was implemented effective May 2007. Please take the time to review these changes, as this version is the form that will be used for performing these tests in the future. Also note that the procedure calls for roadway specimens (specimens containing moisture) to not be dried prior to weighing. These specimens are weighed in the water first, then we get the SSD (Saturated Surface Dry) weight and then we perform the drying process in the oven. Please also note that there are specific instructions for the procedure and temperature constraints for the drying portion of this procedure. The changes to this procedure will help with questions that have arisen in the past about the drying process of this procedure. And in closing, the use of a fan to air dry specimens will not be (and has never been) considered as a valid means of drying specimens to a constant weight. Constant weight is well defined in the test procedure, Constant weight is defined as the weight at which further oven drying does not alter the weight by more than 0.05% in a 2-hr. or longer drying interval.
