WHO WE ARE EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base is the second largest base in the Air Force. Hundreds of significant aviation firsts have been accomplished at Edwards. This is where Capt. Chuck Yeager and the Bell X-1 first broke the sound barrier on Oct. 14, 1947, and where the space shuttle first landed on its initial return from earth s orbit. Today, our combined workforce is still at the cutting edge of aviation technology, developing, testing and evaluating the newest weapon systems and aircraft to ensure reliability for America s war fighters. Edwards is the test-bed for today s premiere aerospace technology programs including hypersonic flight and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. 412TH FORCE SUPPORT SQUADRON The 412th Force Support Squadron contributes to the mission at Edwards AFB by providing events and programs that enhance the quality of life for our Airmen, civilians and their families. BASE-WIDE EVENTS EASTER EGG-STRAVAGANZA April, Bowling Center & Youth Soccer Field Estimated attendance: 1,500 A full day of Easter fun for the whole family beginning with Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the Bowling Center and followed by a huge Easter Egg Hunt on the Youth Soccer Field. Last year over 70 pounds of candy in 8,000 eggs were collected by children of all ages. BACK FOR 2019! RUN WITH HISTORY HALF MARATHON & EXOTIC CAR SHOW May, Rogers Dry Lake bed Estimated attendance: 1,000 This event, hosted by the Fitness Center, is open to the general public and will be publicized heavily throughout the Antelope Valley running community and on base. The half marathon will be utilizing the flight line and dry-lake bed with aircraft positioned on each side of the course and at the finish line. SUMMER BASH July, Wings & Roberts Fields Estimated attendance: 2,500 The Summer Bash is our huge 4th of July celebration. There will be live entertainment, water slides, bouncy castles, pony rides, food & beverage booths, beer garden, sponsor booths, pie eating contest, balloon artists, free watermelon, prize giveaways and much more! WINTERFEST December, BX Parking Lot Estimated attendance: 1,500 Celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with Santa and the Edwards AFB community at our annual Winterfest. There will be judging of the holiday cards, playing in the snow, holiday music, and pictures with Santa. "Easter Egg-stravaganza was awesome! FOOTBALL FRENZY Weekly (NFL Season), Club Muroc Cheer on your favorite team with fellow football fans while enjoying food and drink specials. BREAKFAST WITH SANTA December, High Desert Lanes Children enjoy breakfast and photos with Santa, cookie decorating and two games of bowling! SUMMER READING PROGRAM June - August, Base Library About 600 youth and adults participate in the Summer Reading Program each year for a chance to win awesome prizes. The library kicks off the program in June with an opening party. The staff hosts special activities throughout the day while patrons sign up; children may receive special incentives for signing up during the first day of the program. Every Friday for the rest of the summer the Library hosts a special event for their reading program participants. In August, the library transforms into an indoor carnival where children can play games to earn prizes and eat popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, and other treats. GOLF TOURNAMENTS Edwards Golf Course will be hosting 9 different themed tournaments throughout the year including: Spring into Fall, Turkey Trot, Spirits, Three Blind Mice, Base Championship, Four Ball Golf, Valentine s Day, and the Spring Half & Half Night Tournament. YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAMS There are five sports offered a year: baseball, volleyball, soccer, basketball and track.
