Kim Barnes Arico enters her 10th season at the helm of the St. John s University women s basketball program. In what has become one of the remarkable turnarounds in the BIG EAST and the nation, she has catapulted the Red Storm onto the national scene, returning the program to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nearly two decades and leading the squad to some of its most successful seasons in school history. The Barnes Arico Era at St. John s officially began on May 7, 2002, as she was named the seventh head coach in the then 28-year history of the women s basketball program. Since then, she has put heart and determination back into the St. John s women s basketball team, and has the program on track to be a conference and national force. After taking over a program that finished 3-24 overall (0-16 in the BIG EAST) the year before she arrived, Barnes Arico orchestrated the resurgence of St. John s women s basketball and restored respect for a program that had been historically rich in tradition. Her second-year squad returned to the BIG EAST Tournament field after missing the previous two, while Barnes Arico was named the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Division I Women s Coach of the Year after leading St. John s to a postseason berth (WNIT) for the first time in 17 years in 2004-05. In just her fourth year with the program, Barnes Arico garnered BIG EAST and MBWA Coach of the Year honors, after leading the Red Storm to a 22-8 overall record, a national ranking and its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1987-88. Almost a decade later, her accomplishments speak for themselves: four 20-win seasons, three NCAA Tournament berths and victories, three WNIT appearances with five WNIT wins, eightconsecutive trips to the BIG EAST Tournament and an infusion of energy into the women s basketball program that has been felt by both the University and athletic communities. Barnes Arico s expertise and passion have paid dividends in her nine seasons at St. John s, and the benefits have been long-reaching. The turnaround proved to the basketball world what St. John s already knew -- Barnes Arico and her staff had the ability to put St. John s back on the map. Barnes Arico was at the helm when the University opened Taffner Field House in 2005, a state-of-the-art basketball practice facility. She also led St. John s in its first-ever women s basketball game in Madison Square Garden. Since then, the Red Storm has played seven home contests in The World s Most Famous Arena. Recently highlighting her illustrious career was the 2009-10 campaign, as Barnes Arico led the Red Storm to one of its most successful seasons in history. St. John s posted 25 wins on the year, the most in 27 years, and posted 12 conference wins, tripling its total from the previous season and tying a program-record. St. John s also tied the program mark with 12 BIG EAST wins. Finishing tied for fourth in the conference, Barnes Arico guided the Red Storm to its biggest win in program history, a 76-71 victory over then-no. 4/3 Notre Dame, the first-ever program victory over a top five team. For her efforts, she earned her second Division I Metropolitan Basketball Writer s Association Coach of the Year award and was named the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Statewide Coach of the Year for the second time. Barnes Arico followed up that historic season with the 2010-11 campaign, when she led the Red Storm its second-straight and sixth overall NCAA Tournament berth. She became the first St. John s coach to take the Red Storm to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances since 1983 & 1984. Barnes Arico continued to boast a perfect record in First Round games, always advancing the Red Storm to the Round of 32, for the third time in three appearances. With a 22-11 record, St. John s celebrated its second-straight 20-win season, the fourth of Barnes Arico s tenure. She is only the second coach to have four 20-win seasons at St. John s. With a 72-63 victory over Pittsburgh (Feb. 26, 2011), Barnes Arico marked her 150th win in the St. John s record book, becoming just the second St. John s women s basketball coach to reach the mark. She is 152-124 (.551) at St. John s and 246-196 (.557) overall as a head coach. During the two seasons, the Red Storm was ranked for 16-straight weeks in the Associated Press Poll; with its highest 2010-11 ranking at No. 17 on Dec. 27. In the ESPN/Coaches Poll, St. John s was ranked for 18-straight weeks and was ranked in both polls through the end of the season. Barnes Arico s 2009-10 Red Storm finished ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press Poll, tying a program record for highest ranking. In 2008-09, the first proof of Barnes Arico s transformed program was evident as she inked her first Top 10 recruiting class. She went on to register her 100th program victory; a milestone achieved by only three other coaches at St. John s. She finished the year with the third-most career wins among all Red Storm women s basketball coaches. Additionally, she coached Da Shena Stevens to BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors, marking only the second time in history a St. John s player garnered the award. In 2009-10, Barnes Arico guided Stevens to State Farm and Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention honors in addition to MBWA Player of the Year accolades. Barnes Arico also tutored then-freshman guard Nadirah McKenith to become a final eight candidate for the 2009-10 Nancy Lieberman Award, and coached then-freshman guard Shenneika Smith to Full Court Press Freshman All- America honors. Stevens earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors, while Smith and McKenith were named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. McKenith was also selected as the recipient of the Marianne Noonan Memorial Award. Then-senior Joy McCorvey was named a member of the prestigious St. John s University s President s Society and was a candidate for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. Barnes Arico recorded her 200th-career win as a head coach with an 89-52 victory over Stony Brook on Nov. 21, 2010, and at the end of the 2009-10 season, she was once again named both the MBWA and BCANY Statewide Coach of the Year. Under Barnes Arico s guidance, both Stevens and Smith earned both 2010-11 preseason and postseason All-BIG EAST honors as well, and continued to bring St. John s into the national spotlight as the duo were named to the Naismith Trophy Award s preseason watch list. Prior to arriving at St. John s, Barnes Arico achieved a great deal of success in three seasons as the head coach at Division II Adelphi, leading the Panthers to three-consecutive postseason appearances. During that time, her teams turned in a 65-24 overall mark (.730), including a 28-win season in 2001-02, a season in which she guided the Panthers to their first NCAA Tournament bid since 1987. In what would be her final season at the school, Adelphi won its first-ever New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) Championship and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament, posting a 28-3 record along the way. After starting the season with 21-consecutive wins, the team earned its first national ranking in school history, finishing with a final ranking of No. 12. Barnes Arico was named NYCAC, NIT/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Division II and Nassau County Sports Commission Outstanding Female Coach of the Year. In 2000-01, Adelphi finished the regular season tied for second in the NYCAC with a 19-11 record. The Panthers headed to their second-straight Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament, where they finished second. In her first season at Adelphi, Barnes Arico guided her team to an 18-10 record, tying the program high for wins in a season. She used her fundamental style to lead the Panthers to their first postseason berth, qualifying for the ECAC Tournament. For her work, Barnes Arico was honored as the 2000 NYCAC Coach of the Year. In addition to her coaching duties, Barnes Arico served as an assistant athletic director and the academic liaison for student-athletes at Adelphi. She also served as a member of the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional Selection Committee and the ECAC Advisory Committees. Barnes Arico began her head coaching career in 1996 at Fairleigh Dickinson-Madison, a Division III university in New Jersey. In her only season with the Devils, she led FDU to a 13-11 overall record.
