Do Now: 1. Walk in silently. 2. Grab a calculator and any papers for today. 3. Silently practice your vocab. Due Next Class: Finished Independent Practice New Vocab v = wave speed or velocity (m/s) λ = wavelength (m) f = frequency (Hz or 1/s)

By the end of today, IWBAT Describe and label the parts of, and calculate the frequency, wavelength, and wave speed of a transverse wave Why it matters in LIFE: Part of being a functional human being is being able to understand what s happening in the world around you! Why it matters in THIS CLASS: Our Goal = 80% Mastering today s lesson (focused participation, asking questions, etc) is the first brick that will help us reach our goal for this unit, and eventually for the year

TEKS: (B) investigate and analyze characteristics of waves, including velocity, frequency, amplitude, and wavelength, and calculate using the relationship between wavespeed, frequency, and wavelength; By the end of today, IWBAT Describe and label the parts of, and calculate the frequency, wavelength, and wave speed of a transverse wave Topic: Waves Basics

WAVES Waves transfer energy through matter or space

TRANSVERSE WAVES Waves move perpendicular to the transfer of energy Ex: light, seismic, water ripples, radio waves

TRANSVERSE WAVES Waves move perpendicular to the transfer of energy

LONGITUDINAL WAVES Waves move parallel to the transfer of energy Ex: sound

LONGITUDINAL WAVES Waves move parallel to the transfer of energy

The crests of transverse waves are like the compressions on a longitudinal wave.

WAVELENGTH, λ Units (m) On a transverse wave, it is measured from crest to crest or trough to trough

WAVELENGTH, λ Units (m) On a longitudinal wave, it is measured from compression to compression.

PRACTICE 1 minute BY YOURSELF; 1 minute to compare with your partner.

LET S PRACTICE Identify the crest, the trough, and one wavelength.

LET S PRACTICE Identify the compression, the rarefaction, and one wavelength.

LET S PRACTICE In the picture, count how many wavelengths are shown on each wave.

AMPLITUDE, A Units (m) - how much energy a wave has. On a transverse wave, it is measured from crest to normal

AMPLITUDE - how much energy a wave has. On a longitudinal wave, amplitude is the width of the compression Amplitude

FREQUENCY, f Units (Hz) Frequency is how many times a wave goes by in 1 second. Number of waves/second Units for frequency = Hertz (Hz) or (1/s)

FREQUENCY f = 1/T f = frequency (1/s) T = Period (s)

WAVELENGTH, FREQUENCY & WAVE SPEED The greater the wavelength, the lower the frequency! Large wavelength means low frequency. Small wavelength means high frequency.

To calculate the speed of a wave, multiply the wavelength by the frequency. v = λf v = wave speed or velocity (m/s) λ = wavelength (m) f = frequency (Hz or 1/s)

EXAMPLE A wave has a frequency of 10 Hz and a wavelength of 1.5 m. What is the wave speed?

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE! Procedure for IP time: 1) Silent work time 2) Try and solve without notes first! Hierarchy of who to ask 1) Your brain 2) Your notes 3) Your partner (quiet whisper) 4) Ms. Cowley

EXIT TICKET (4 MIN) 1. Identify the crests, troughs, wavelength, and amplitude. 2. A wave has a frequency of 16 Hz and a wavelength of 0.5 m. What is the wave speed?
