FOOTPRINTS Volume 3, Issue 1 Spring 2013 HARRC President s Column 9 One of the Original HARRCers Earns Lifetime National Honor! Many HARRCers may recognize the name of Park Barner, because each November when Harrisburg Marathon time rolls around, the Patriot-News mentions him as one of only two men who have finished that race every year since it began in 1973. However, in recent years the 68-yearold Barner has come in toward the tail end of the pack, with times the past 6 years between 5:20 and 5:55. From this, someone unfamiliar with running history might conclude that Mr. Barner is just an ordinary runner whose main claim to fame rests on a simple ability to slog through our hometown marathon every year for four decades. Wrong! To a subset of American runners, the name of Park Barner is spoken in tones of reverence, because he is considered a legendary figure. Throughout the 1970s and early '80s, this man who was one of HARRC's founding fathers was also nationally prominent for his fantastic running performances. In fact, back then he was our country's most famous ultramarathoner. In December, the American Ultramarathon Association inducted Barner into its American Ultrarunning Hall of Fame. In achieving this honor, Park became only the 10th person to be voted into the AUA Hall of Fame. Taking up the sport before the running boom in the U.S. took off, when Barner was first active there were only a handful of ultra events held in the U.S. The most commonly contested ultradistance event was the 50-miler. In that event, breaking 6 hours is an elite standard, and Barner broke that barrier an amazing 19 times between 1973-81. (He had an additional 12 races between 6:00 and 6:15.) Only one other American has 19 sub-6s in his career, and that is Ray Krolewicz of South Carolina, who had 19 such performances between 1981-1991. Krolewicz merely happens to be the American who has won more ultramarathons than anyone else in history. His career overlapped Barner's for a few years, and Ray has said that one of the biggest honors of his life was the privilege of competing against Park Barner of Harrisburg, Pa. (Ray also said that any time he was in the lead in an ultra with less than 20 miles to go to the finish line, he almost always felt certain he had the race won. Unless Park was also in the race. There were only two rivals Krolewicz ever feared might overtake him late in a race, and Barner was one of them.) It was at the 100-kilometer distance, though, that Barner first hit the sport's pinnacle. This metric length was the most popular international ultradistance event. In 1974, he set the American record for the 62.1-mile run with a 7:37:42 at Lake Waramaug, Conn. Two years later, he smashed that mark by running 7:16:15 in a 100-K put on by Walt Greene and HARRC on a 6-mile loop around the Mechanicsburg Navy Depot. In the following year he broke his own record two more times, eventually lowering the U.S. record to 7:11:44. Although nowadays the most popular ultra events are 100- mile trail races (in which most entrants plan on taking some walk breaks), during Park's days there were very few opportunities to go beyond 100Ks. That is unfortunate, because he did even better the longer the race was. He only got to run two 100-milers in his career, and won both, in 13:41:00 and 13:57:36. He also ran two elite 24-hour performances. The second came at Huntington Beach, Calif., in 1979, where Park covered 162 miles, 537 yards in a day's time. This surpassed by almost a mile the existing world record held by England's Ron Bentley. Barner was always known for his rock-steady pacing, and this race was a great example of that ability. Normally in a 24-hour race, everyone's splits deteriorate noticeably, but Park ran the first three 50-mile segments of that event in splits of 7:14-7:15-7:21. Besides his even pacing, Barner displayed an incredible durability. One of his most impressive performances was a "stage" race in November 1974. The event involved running 100 kilometers per day for 3 consecutive days, on a course going beginning at the Washington Monument and following the C-&- O Canal towpath along the Potomac River to Cumberland, Md. Park ran his daily 100Ks in 7:52, 8:12, and 7:48. In other words, over a Fri-Sat-Sun period, he ran 186.4 miles at an average pace of under 7 minutes and 40 seconds per mile. The following year, Barner decided he didn't want to break up the 300 kilometers into daily segments, so he ran the entire distance in a 36 hours and 48 minutes, running through sub-freezing temperatures along the darkened river at night, and taking only one nap. His longest effort came in 1982, when he won a 500- mile race along much of Lake Michigan. Of course, for most runners who concentrate on doing 10-K races and maybe do occasional marathons, it is hard to comprehend what a high-quality time in an ultra might consist of. However, to give an example of both Park's great endurance ability, he frequently ran two long races in the same weekend, and his best pair of these were a couple marathons in Philadelphia and Baltimore, when he ran a 2:37 on Saturday, and did a 2:39 on Sunday. In 1976, he ran a 50-miler in New Continued on pg. 3

Park con t from page 1 York on Saturday in 5:54:22, and the next day he did the Harrisburg Marathon in 2:51:08. Throughout all this, Barner impressed his fans by his self-effacing modesty. People admired him for his gentle personality and quiet wit. But he remained a private enough individual that when he was invited to go on the Johnny Carson Show after his great 24-hour run, Park declined, saying he'd prefer to use his vacation time from his state government job for going to races. I ran a lot of the same races Barner did back then, and was sometimes competitive with him. But it was an unusual sensation to find oneself pacing along in the vicinity of Park Barner 30 or 40 miles into an ultramarathon; because whenever that happened, I could only hear the slap-slap of one runner's shoes, and the huff-puffing of one person's lungs. Park was 8 inches taller than me, and 40 pounds heavier, but if I closed my eyes, I wouldn't have even known he was there! During his prime, Barner regularly logged over 6000 training miles in a year, sometimes for years without missing a day of running. When he reached age 40, though, he chose to stop doing ultramarathons and cut back drastically on all his running, to where he eventually would only do a few hundred miles per year. The one thing that never changed, however, was that he's continued to start and finish the Harrisburg Marathon annually. That streak now stands at 40 years in a row. Meanwhile, he has now been recognized for a glorious past which may have been unknown to most HARRC members. We should all be pleased to belong to a club which also has a member of the American Ultrarunning Hall of Fame in it. ---Nick Marshall MEMBER SPOT LIGHT MaryAnn Kennedy...Footprints Publisher MaryAnn has been a runner for over 35 years, starting when her three children where small, as a way to keep her sanity. She started with 5ks but soon moved up to 10k and then to the marathon. The first 5K she ran, she won her age group and was hooked. MaryAnn first marathon was the Marin Corps Marathon in 1989 since she has since completed over 20 marathons including Harrisburg three times and Boston twice. Now her favorite distance is the half marathon, completing 4-5 per year with her sisters. A couple years ago, MaryAnn expanded her athletic endeavors to include triathlons, competing numbers sprint, Olympic and half iron distances before moving up to the IronMan. She completed her first Ironman in Florida in 2010. MaryAnn not only has a passion for running. She is also passionate about the battle against cancer. She currently works for the American Cancer Society, managing 3 Relay For Life events and the new PA Hope Ride. Her first marathon training was done with the marathon clinics put on by the Harrisburg Road Runners back in 1988 and is excited to be back with the HARRC as publisher of FOOTPRINTS. Kelly Waltma-Spreha..Footprints Editor Kelly started her running career as a middle-distance runner with her high school track team. She took a break from the sport for several years, but started running again in 2002 when she and her husband trained for their first half-marathon. While she fell back in love with running, her participation was intermittent for the next several years as she and her husband were blessed with 2 beautiful children, and Kelly went back to school to pursue her PhD. Although the PhD is still in progress, 2012 marked her official comeback year and Kelly has gotten back into running with renewed passion. Along with completing several roadrunning events, she added trail races and a Spartan Sprint to her list of completed races in 2012. She also discovered the sport of triathlon, completing two sprint triathlons, and is registered for the Timberman IronMan 70.3 in August 2013. In addition to being a full-time PhD student at Temple University, Kelly is an adjunct faculty member at Messiah College; and her husband, Ed Spreha, Jr., is a private attorney in Harrisburg. Kelly is the newly named Editor for HARRC Footprints, and is excited to be a member of the team.
FROM THE PRESIDENT 2012 was a great year for HARRC. We sponsored three official races, The Aspire Urgent Care and Family Medicine HARRC after Dark 7K in August, HARRC in the Park 15K trail race in October, directed by Frank Crupi and Tadd Morris, and the Resolution Run 5K, directed by Marge Lebo and Mary Lou Harris, on an icy, snow packed course on Dec 30 th. All three races were successful and each turned a small profit. In fact HARRC was in the black for the first time since 2008, thanks to the determined efforts of many volunteers. HARRC sponsored a free run every Sunday continuing the streak started in 1974. HARRC also provided Race Timing services to numerous races throughout the year. We provided volunteers for the Harrisburg Marathon, the Harrisburg Mile and other YMCA running events. Our members organized the Capital 10 Miler, the Colon Cancer 5K, the Paxtang 5K and several other races throughout the area. Eighty additional copies of Hap Miller s book on the first 4 decades of the Harrisburg Marathon were printed. Several remain for sale. Contact Hap at hap813@aol.com. JR Bishop produced an outstanding Footprints Newsletter each quarter of the year. The newsletter duties for 2013 have passed to Kelly Spreha, Editor and MaryAnn Kennedy, Publisher. Our website www.harrc.org is updated by webmasters April Walsh and Deb Schneider. Brandon Parks provides all web development activities. Walt Greene has been the HARRC membership Chairman for over 30 years. Those duties have now been assumed by Michael Oblender and Deb Schneider. Deb has also been elected to the HARRC Board of Directors replacing long time board member, Marge Lebo. Jim Vorhauer continues to handle the Age Group Championship (AGCS) Statistician Duties. Jerod Girton processed the Runner of the Year statistics and Nikki Bell compiles all of the membership participation points. Jim Collins is the coordinator of the HARRC picnic in September and the annual awards banquet in March. Steve Whittle cooked at the picnic, produced the program for the banquet and was the most prolific Sunday Run Director. All four officers, running unopposed, were re-elected for 2013. Jim Collins, VP, Nikki Bell, Secretary, and Brad Garfinkel, Treasurer, will join me for another exciting year at HARRC. Fred Shadel will be the club s Deposit Coordinator and process all revenue receipts. This duty was also handled by Walt Greene for the past 3 decades. There are three running groups that affiliate with HARRC and are open to all runners. The Tuesday Morning Group meets every Tuesday at the North Pavilion of Wildwood Lake at 8:30 AM. A run around the lake is followed by breakfast. The River Rats meet every Saturday at 7:30 AM at City Island and the River Runners meet at City Island and other locations. More information can be found at www.harrc.org. HARRC also supports the Aspire UCFM marathon training team which meets every Saturday for over 20 weeks leading up to the Harrisburg Marathon. by Brad Colwell, President HARRC
