Flow measurement 1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION - CHARACTERISTICS Metal flow controller in stainless steel used to detect weak flows in horizontal or vertical piping systems (direction of the ascending flow). This is a device with very simple and reliable design. The flow controller is made essentially of a body with fixed flanges PN16 FS or PN20(150lbs) (DN depending on the model) including a diaphragm paddle set, and an aluminum box IP65 with a reed switch bistable inverter (male receptacle Souriau series 8N45 connection or SAIB series NU25 103-400-K2) in it. 2. Flow measurement The flow controller consists of : - a body of stainless steel 316L (1). - a diaphragm paddle set (2) of stainless steel 316L - a receptacle SOURIAU (4) ref : 8N45 1111 25 or a receptacle SAIB (4 ) réf : 251-103-400-K2 - a straight end + plug (5) ref : 8N45 1185 51 (optional) a straight end + plug (5 ) ref : 254-103-400-K2 (optional) - reed switch (6) for Souriau or (6 ) for SAIB. A paddle joined on the diaphragm, placed at right angle to the flow, moves depending of the flow value in the direction of the fluid. A magnet fixed on the paddle in an inox slot regulates the state of the contact when the cutoff value is reached. IMPORTANT NOTE: The flow controller is factory adjusted for a specific cutoff value. Do not change the position of the contact, which must be up to the stop against the internal wall of the box (red point of the contact with respect to the cover) Identify the type of receptacle on the Box and adapt the correspondent plug according to requirement of the site. For a possible replacement of the switch, it imperative to specify the model of receptacle installed on the box. 3. PIPE EXPLOITATION. - The installation of the flow controller can be performed on a vertical or horizontal pipe (position to be established with precision in the order). - In horizontal installation, the contact box must be located in the lower part. - Verify the direction of circulation of the fluid before installation (red arrow attached to the body) - Be sure that the fluid to be controlled does not contain solid or magnetic particles, which could impede the good operation of the device. 4. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE This device needs no special care except the maintenance in good operational state of the diaphragm-paddle set (for example, filters or traps for magnetic particles are to be installed when used with charged fluids). 5. REPLACEMENT OF THE CONTACT UNIT (6) OR (6') This operation does not need any isolation of the line or dismantling of the device. 5.1.DISASSEMBLY - Disconnect the plug (5) / (5 ) from the receptacle (4) / (4 ) - Remove the cover of the box (3) - Unwind and remove the two screws of the contact fixing flange - Unwind the four screws fixing the receptacle (4) / (4 ) on the box (3) - Take out the contact (6) / (6 ) + receptacle (4) / (4 ) unit - Remove the unit consisting of insulating support and contact from its frame - Using a SOURIAU extraction tool ref : 8400 448 or SAIB ref : 086-025-02, take out the three contacts from their insulating support. (See here) 5.2. REASSEMBLING - Take the spare contact with its three contacts (6) / (6 ) - Using an insertion tool SOURIAU ref : 8400 1475 or SAIB ref : 085-025-01 insert the contacts in their insulating support. - Install this unit in the receptacle (4) / (4 ) placing the actuator up to the stop in the deepest slot - Place and manually tighten the clamping cone and nut - Fix the receptacle (4) / (4 ) on the box (3) - Place and fix the contact using two screws and the fixation flange of the contact Important NOTE: During the installation of the reed switch in the box, its termination must be in contact with the internal wall of the box (red point of the contact facing the cover). - Mount the box cover (3) - Reconnect the plug (5) / (5 ) to the receptacle (4) / (4 ) - Check the correct operation of the contact with respect of the specified alarm flow value. If necessary, make another adjustment to obtain this value moving the contact box in the openings provided for this purpose. After the adjustment, make sure that the fixing screws of the box are tightened. Page 5
Flow measurement 6.ESSENTIAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS These devices must be installed horizontally or vertically and fixed correctly on the piping. Sudden variations of valve areas or installation types causing flow perturbation must be avoided. Attention do not prestress the device during the installation on the piping. Before the installation, check the cleanliness of the piping. The pipes must be free of any solid particles. The valves must be progressively maneuvered to avoid any waterhammer effect or vibration. Never exceed the max. operating pressure of the device. Never exceed the max. operating temperature indicated on the device plate. Do not use the device for any other type of fluid other than indicated on the device plate. Do not use solvents when cleaning the protection box. Do not put the device under sudden temperature changes Regularly check the corrosion state of the device SAFETY RELATED TO TEMPERATURE This pressure equipment being a part of a unit, it is the responsibility of the integrator to take the necessary measures in order to ensure the protection against risks due to temperature (for persons but also the type of ambient materials in conformity with the specification of the device). Protection could be ensured, for example, by insulation of hot elements, by access protection systems, by any system adapted to the site of use and compatible with the regulations in force. Before any action on pressure equipment, the qualified and authorized operator must check if the present conditions : pressure, temperature, etc are compatible with the planned actions. In the case of equipment with alarm contacts, he must also take every precaution in relation to the use of these contacts : voltage, current, elements or machines regulated through these contacts, etc The seals should be replaced, if needed, and the tightening elements of bolts checked. OPENING AND CLOSING OF PRESSURE EQUIPMENT Before any action on pressure equipment, the qualified and authorized operator must make sure that the present conditions : pressure, temperature, etc are compatible with the planned actions. In the case of equipment with alarm contacts, he must also take every precaution in relation to the use of these contacts : voltage, current, elements or machines regulated through these contacts, etc The dismantling of elements necessary for the access to PE (Pressure equipment) must be performed using the proper tools. The reinstallation is performed in the inverse order to the dismantling. The seals should be replaced, if needed, and the tightening elements checked, etc. Before pressurization, the operator checks if all the safety rules (same for new devices) are respected.. The conditions of use must be in conformity with the indicated prescriptions. This equipment must not contain fluids of any other group but the one (or, possibly, several groups), for which it was designed. It is strictly forbidden to perform any temporary or definitive modification, or any operation susceptible of modifying its physical, mechanical, or metallic characteristics on any of its parts, without preliminary written approval of the manufacturer. Any modification with respect to all this information, susceptible of placing at risk the safety related to any use of the equipment, is done outside the responsibility of HOUDEC INSTRUMENT SAS. The user must check that before start-up the safety instructions related to pressure equipment as well as to the good operation of the adjoining elements are observed. This equipment is designed for static loads corresponding to the device own weight and to the specific constraints linked to pressure and temperature as defined in the technical specification. It is not designed for additional loads or constraints related to vibration conditions, except if special agreement has been made during the preliminary studies. SAFETY RELATED TO PRESSURE This pressure equipment being a part of a unit, it is the responsibility of the integrator to take the necessary measures in order to ensure the protection against risks of internal overpressure or those due to improper use. Protection could be ensured, for example, by installation of security devices (valves). The integrator must also perform the necessary actions in order to guarantee safety of personnel in case of interventions on the equipment (for example : installation of insulation devices, valves and elements of measurement of residual pressure, manometer or any other.) He can implement any other mean (or design principle) as far as the latter can guarantee a safety level that is compatible with the essential safety requirements requested by the directive 97/23/CE and/or the regulations in force.
