This also means that our fellow shaggers will be on the road visiting family and having family come to visit. Please know that when you are not with us at any social, we miss you and we wish you and your family safe travels. Please be on the lookout for an important email and page 3 regarding our Fall fundraiser. We need your input and strongly suggest that each member replies. See Bahre Willis (SOBS, Vice President) if you have any questions. This month we headed back to the Moose Lodge for our second social. What a pleasant change from previous times. There is a new general manager, the AC was working, the floor and room were cleaner, and the ladies room had a new faucet. (I realize you men don t realize that was a problem but just ask us gals and we will tell you of the sagas of hot water only or cold water only or splashing faucets or one that wouldn t cut off unless you held your tongue just right!) Tamera (Barbara, our former bartender s daughter) was our new bartender and she did a fabulous job keeping us hydrated. The food was yummy as usual. They even had a special meal and I can vouch for the fact that it was great (2 boneless pork chops, scalloped potatoes and seasoned fresh green beans all for $7). My understanding is that there will be a special each night along with hamburgers and hotdogs. When you order food if you will give the waitress an idea of where you are sitting (which side of the room) your food will get to you a lot sooner. Regarding food at the VFW: From time to time we will have Brad cook for us at the VFW. Please keep in mind that Joe will request a reply by a certain date. We must hold to that deadline since Brad is given the numbers just after the deadline so he can purchase the food to be prepared. Please do not send a request after the deadline or call the VFW and ask them to add you to the list. From time to time there may be a few additional plates available for purchase without prior ordering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. DON T FORGET As most of you know by now we have run into difficulty securing a bar to be available when we use the Brunswick Center. Although it has a great dance floor and wonderful facilities, we are putting that option on hold until all of the details can be worked out. A new feature this month was a shag lesson taught prior to our dance at the Moose Lodge and we had a large turnout. John and Katy taught a great lesson. Look for more lessons to be taught by John and Katy, Chuck and Sandy, and Mamie and Kim each time we are dancing at the Moose Lodge. We are so fortunate that we have such talented members who can teach us new steps. We will continue the line dance instruction at the VFW. Please remember that any member can attend our monthly board meetings. The location will be included at the end of the last month s minutes in our newsletter. Maybe you have a suggestion for a way to improve our club, an idea to propose, or just want to see how things run. This is your club and we want to hear from you. Keep shagging Ellen Wester, President

June 2015 Th e Beach Beat! Page 2 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes - May 6, 2015... Present: Ellen Wester, Pam Bacon, Diani Johnson, Bahre Willis, Brenda Willis, Joe Malinowski, Chuck Boney, John Hutton, Katy O Neil. Meeting was called to order by Ellen at 6:05 PM. Secretary s Report: A motion to accept the Secretary s Report of April 1 was made, seconded and approved by the Committee members in attendance. Treasurer s Report: Diani gave the Treasurers report from April 1 st, the bank balance is $4,285.74. Motion was made to accept April report and approved. There was a question about the name tags and it was mentioned that if we get more we should get a larger font for those of us that are getting older and the eye site is not what it used to be. Old Business: April 10 th dance was held at The Lazy Turtle and some commented that there was too much line dancing. We had a discussion of ways that we can incorporate line dances into the evening so that all will be happy. John and Katy will start teaching line dances at The Lazy Turtle beginning May 7 th, every Thursday night. The May 8 th dance will be at the VFW with DJ Jimmy Buffkin and the club will provide subs for the dance. Joe and Linda Harlow will be at the door. Theme will be Mother s Day and Pam will purchase carnations for all the women to receive after the dance. SOS Parade Committee: John reported that the SOS Spring Safari was a great time and we had 62 people show up for the parade. We again won 2 nd place as a shag troop. Chuck made the suggestion that next year we have a presentation that would be performed in front of the judges. The free pour after the parade was a great success and cost was $655.80. Newsletter: Joe will be sending out the newsletter on May 30 th. Everything else is going good with newsletter. Membership: Chuck reported we have 162 members (131 re-ups & 31 new members) and 61 who did not re-up from 2014. email was sent out to the 61 members to remind them to re-up. An New Business: Pam had contacted a caterer to see if they could offer us a mobile bar for the dances at the Brunswick Center. Unfortunately he cannot provide this because the town told him that even with the caterer license we are not a private club and that would be like him selling to anyone and not a private party. This would make his catering license void for this event. Ellen will contact the Moose to see if we can hold the dances there. There has been suggestions made that we offer some basic shag lessons before the dances instead of line dances. John & Katy, Kim & Mamie, and Chuck & Sandy said they would be willing to do this. This will start at the May 22 dance. Ellen received a call from a lady that wanted some members to come to a wedding reception at Bald Head Island and demonstrate the shag dance to the guests at the wedding. Chuck said he would contact her and set this up. John Carpenter could not be here tonight to discuss our tax exempt status, but he sent handouts on the subject. Ellen suggested that we table this and send the papers out to all of the board members and discuss this at a later meeting. Bahre has been getting information together to see what the cost will be to hold a golf tournament for our fundraiser this year. There was a discussion about this and Katy suggested that we bring this before the membership to see which they would prefer to do. Ellen requested Bahre to give her a summary and we would bring this up for the members to discuss. Next meeting will be June 3, 2015 at Ellen Wester s house, 5218 Windward Way, Southport, NC. Phone 919-215-4680. All members are invited to attend. Meeting adjourned at 7:30 PM. Minutes Submitted by: Pam Bacon, Secretary

June 2015 Th e Beach Beat! Page 3 Proposal for Golf Tournament as Fundraiser for Operation Uplink Reminder of the email sent on May 28, 2015 To all SOBS we are looking at another option to our Fall fundraiser in lieu of the auctions we have had each year. This does not mean a change in the recipient (Operation Uplink), but a possible change in what we do to raise these funds. Bahre Willis, our Vice President, has proposed sponsoring/conducting a golf tournament as an alternative. Either option, we need help from all of our members. Each option has its pros and cons, but we need to know which you prefer. Each member has one vote, so couples need to reply with separate responses. We need responses from all members as to whether you want to continue with the auctions or to hold a golf tournament as the fundraiser. A decision will be made by the end of June so we can move forward with either plan. Please vote by sending Bahre an email to: brenbahre@yahoo.com with the word GOLF or AUCTION in the Subject line. It s as simple as that! His proposal follows below Proposal for Golf Tournament as Fundraiser for Operation Uplink We would like to solicit 50+ hole sponsors on 18 holes. We can have as many hole sponsors as we can sell. For example, if we should sell 54 hole sponsors we would put three on each hole at the tee box (54 divided by 18 =3). Mulligan string sales are 3 ft. pieces of string for $10.00 with a max of 4 per team. This 3-foot piece of string, given out with a pair of children s craft scissors, can be used to improve a lie, sink a putt or move a putt. However, each time the string is brought into play, that length used must be cut off. When all the string is gone, it s gone! Prizes could be trophies for the first three places of 4-some teams (12). Trophies also for closest to the pin (par 3 hole) and one longest drive. Possibly 2 trophies each if we have a good women presence. A Goodie bag will be given to each player that could include a sleeve of balls, cracker snack, gum, and tees. Date: Saturday October 24, 2015 at Carolina National Golf Club Golf Format: Captains Choice, Shotgun start Price for participants: $75.00 ea. includes green fees, cart and lunch. Commitment from SOBS membership (170 members): Solicit hole sponsors (for $50 we will place a sign at the tee box with the name/logo of the sponsor) Recruit 4-somes (100 players) Volunteers at the Course the day of the tournament Projected Income: 25 foursomes/100 participants @ $75.00 ea. 50 hole sponsorships @ $50.00 ea. String sales - 75-3' lengths @ $10.00 ea. Total Income Projected Expenses: Green fees, cart, and lunch @ $45.00 ea. Signs for hole sponsors @$25.00 ea. Prizes Goodie bags String Total Expenses Estimated net profit $ 7,500.00 $ 2,500.00 $ 750.00 $10,750.00 -$ 4,500.00 -$ 1,250.00 -$ 500.00 -$ 250.00 -$ 0.00 -$ 6,500.00 $ 4,250.00 If you have any questions, please call Bahre at (910-754-5370) or email (brenbahre@yahoo.com). June 2015 Th e Beach Beat! Page 5 Meet some of our Members... Rob & Diani Where are you from? City/State Moved here from Englewood, NJ two years ago. What brought you to the Brunswick County area? Diani retired and we have always wanted to live in North Carolina. What's your background? Diani was a business executive in the food industry and Rob is still active as an airline pilot. What are your hobbies? Diani plays bridge (Rob might learn after retiring) and enjoys gardening. We fly a 4 passenger aircraft based at the Cape Fear Regional Airport, have a boat docked at SJP Marina, play golf, attend opera (although Rob does not like to admit that!), line dancing and shag. Rob reads a lot while traveling and attempts to play drums. One of these days he would like to be good enough to play in a lousy band. How long have you been shag dancing? 1 1/2 years. How & where did you learn to shag? Beginner and 2 intermediate courses with Chuck and Sandy Boney. Currently, attending class at the Lazy Turtle with John and Katy. What do you like about shag dancing? It's a lot of fun and just "cool"; it's a great physical activity; and we've made many new friends in association with the SOBS. How long have you been a member of the SOBS? 1 1/2 years. What positions have you held in the SOBS? Diani is currently the club Treasurer. What are your hopes for the club? Direction/growth/road-trips/etc. Looking forward to attending our first SOS this Fall and continuing to promote shag dancing to future SOBS. WELCOME to our New Members & Guests... Our May 8 th Mothers Day SOBS dance was at the Oak Island VFW. DJ Jimmy Buffkin played his extensive beach music library and kept the dance floor full. VFW s Chef Brad made up his signature sub sandwiches as the SOBS provided Subs on the Club. We had 65 SOBS in attendance, 2 re-ups, 6 new members, and 3 guests. WELCOME to our newest members, Roger & Susan Albizu, Annamarie Gildea, Sheila Horrell, Chris Kenny and Mike Slowik. We hope to see you at all of our dances. Our May 22 nd dance had us back to Oak Island Moose Lodge with DJ Gene Sistare. Yes, we do have the best beach music DJ at our dances!! We had 66 SOBS and 6 guests show up to keep the dance floor full. Thanks to John Hutton & Katy O Neill for a great shag dance lesson before the dance. They showed up some smooth transitions out of traditional shag moves. Summer is fast approaching, so lets wear out those WEEJUNS!
