The trapped air between the various material layers insulates well and weighs nothing. This achieves a high degree of insulation while still maintaining a low weight. Feet are particularly vulnerable to the cold and the most important thing to do is to keep them dry. Having dry feet reduces the risk of being chilled. Wear socks made from wool or a wool blend that insulates and wicks moisture well. For longer tours, use one thin pair of socks underneath a thicker pair in order to reduce friction and to prevent blisters. Gore-Tex prevents water from penetrating the boot. The membrane also transports moisture from your foot out of the boot as water vapor. Place a paper close to the wall and with bare feet place the foot on the paper, with your heel to the wall. Since it is important to stand up straight, preferably have someone help you draw a line in front of the longest toe. Remember to measure both feet as they might not be identical. With a ruler, confirm the measurement in centimeters and add additional space according to the list below. ADDITIONAL SPACE Racing: add approx. 1 cm. Backcountry, Touring and Expedition: add approx. 1.5 cm Note that this method is purely intended as a guideline. 12 13

POLAR / // EXPEDITION ART.NR. MODEL 318 105 451 POLAR A/P/S INTRO DESCRIPTION An extreme ski boot for extreme conditions and pioneering adventurers. An extremely comfortable and warm BC-boot with an integrated gaiter that is reinforced with Kevlar on exposed areas. The boot features a winter lining with Gore-Tex and has been developed specifically for expeditions and long journeys on skis in extremely cold conditions. Polar A/P/S also has a specially developed last that ensures you have room for wool inner boots or two pairs of polar socks. It also has extra insulation within the sole and liner. The boot has been used on a wide range of expeditions, both to the North and South Poles, however, it is also suitable for simpler expeditions in cold conditions. Wool inner boots or polar socks are purchased separately. We recommend buying the boot 2 sizes larger than normal for use during extreme conditions. A comfortable and very warm ski boot that is perfect for the adventurer who will not let extreme cold put a stop to their expedition. The boot features a water repellent Cordura upper with exterior leather reinforcements for added protection and support. The midsole has been manufactured with special rubber that allows it to withstand extreme conditions without cracking. This model is built around a total concept for footwear at low temperatures. The concept consists of a thin polypropylene/nylon sock over the foot, then a vapor barrier or vapor tight sock and finally a wool inner boot or two pairs of polar socks. 08 CARE INSTRUCTIONS // CARE INSTRUCTIONS CLEANING Use a brush to clean the sole and sole edge. The outer leather is best wiped with a damp cloth, yet heavily soiled boots can be cleaned in lukewarm soapy water or a mild shoe care product. Remember to rinse thoroughly with water. Sharp objects, like rocks and pine needles, must be removed prior in order to avoid tearing the Gore-Tex membrane. The Gore-Tex membrane can get clogged from the inside by sweat and salt produced by the foot. This will hinder evaporation and thus your feet can feel moist. To maintain breathability it is important to clean the inside of your boots as well as the outside. We recommend using lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap. Carefully use your hands or a soft brush to rub the inside, rinse well and pack with newspaper. Remove the paper after a while (approximately 30 minutes) and let the boots dry at room temperature. Always ensure that your boots have dried completely prior to further use. Soaked boots can be packed with newspaper for a short period to remove excess moisture before removing it and letting them air dry. Always remember to remove the insoles and fully open the tongue to provide ventilation. It is important not to place your boots too close to a heat source, as leather can become stiff, hard and cracked when exposed to high temperatures. All shoes and boots, except those with Alfa-Air technology, must be treated and cared for in order to maintain their performance. Even though the Gore-Tex membrane keeps your foot dry despite lack of care, the outer material will draw water and the boots will lose their features of insulation and low weight. They will also dry slowly and, in addition, you risk deformation. IMPREGNATION Impregnation maintains waterproofness. Avoid silicon based products, rather use Gore-Tex suitable impregnation. FULL GRAIN LEATHER The best results come from wax based, solid impregnation products. Apply with a brush and then polish to increase durability. Impregnation in spray form can be used as a base layer underneath wax based products. NUBUCK LEATHER Use liquid, water-based impregnation for nubuck leather. By using wax-based products, the leather will eventually look more like smooth leather. To maintain the original suede/ nubuck look, there are custom brushes meant to ruffle the leather surface. TEXTILES/SYNTHETICS/SPLIT LEATHER To maintain water resistant properties in these materials, it is important to regularly use impregnation in spray form. This type of care product is highly suitable and easy to apply. // ALFA SHOE CARE 01. Remove the insole and allow it to dry after every use. Throughout the day, the average feet release between 1.5-2 dl of sweat. Therefore, cleaning the boots on the inside is just as important as the outside. 02. Never embark on a long tour with new boots. Instead, try them on for shorter periods of time prior to going out, in order to let the shoe adapt to your particular anatomy. 03. Avoid cotton socks. Cotton traps moisture and creates a poor climate in your boots. Use high quality socks made from wool, other moisture wicking synthetic materials, or a blend of the two. 04. Do not over-tighten your boots. Proper blood circulation depends on the pumping motion of a walking foot. Our extra lace lock hook provides individual adjustment opportunities in the ankle and instep. In flat terrain, it is beneficial to let the shaft be loosely laced to improve circulation. Remember that cold conditions put even more stress on blood circulation, therefore, avoid lacing the boots tighter than necessary. 05. Room temperature is ideal for drying boots. Never place the boots close to a heat source, as exposure to high temperatures can damage the materials. Soaked boots can be packed with newspaper to speed up the drying process. 06. Dirt decreases breathability, thus it is important to keep the boots clean. Frequency depends on type of use, but maintain an appropriate level of care. Using lukewarm water and a brush is recommended for external cleaning. 07. Frequently impregnate your boots. Preferably before and after every long trip. 08. Do not store shoes and boots directly on heated floors. The heat will accelerate the aging process and with time ruin the leather. 50 51
