The Knights Of The Round Circle Control Line Model Airplane Club August 2013 President s Message To help a beginner control line pilot In This Issue President s Message Mike Alurac This last weekend of July 27-28 and while out at Whittier Narrows Dutch Auction John Wright flying at the combat circle we were visited by an interested young Upcoming Events man Dave Rogers of Orange, Ca. He showed-up with a Black Hawk Models Lil Combat fitted with a Cox 049 Black Widow. With the need for a handle, lines and some assistance all present offered to lend a hand with a handle, lines to get him up and flying. Chuck Rudner, Rich Lopez, Don Jensen, Russ Graves and I collectively offered him a handle and lines along with a great deal of assistance as we were able to get him up and flying his Lil Combat, a plank wing of a very simple design. It flew incredibly well with Chuck in the pilots circle training Dave to fly his plane finished in a bright green rattle can finish. Upon the first flight and landing the engine mount broke off and it was retired for the day. Meeting Reminder But the fun didn t stop there Next Regular Meeting Tuesday Night August 13, 2013 Fullerton Airport AFI building 4119 W. Commonwealth Avenue Fullerton, CA 92833 Meetings start at 7:00pm. Having sparked such a high level of interest in this first flight we soon graduated him up to a 35 class club trainer that I had been carrying around in the back of my truck for such an occasion. Our club trainer come to find-out started with the problems of running old stuff. After a few short lived flights of the club trainer due to fuel problems of debris in an old tank, Don Jensen stepped-up and offered Dave to fly his 500 sq. inch slow combat foam wing running an OS FP40. He slowed it down by adding a couple of streamers, richening the needle and with Chuck Rudner s assistance at the handle the seasoned combat guys were eager to give this newbie a taste of some real exciting control line flying. Making this experience a memorable and hopefully an addictive one! Our club s pilots are always there to help lend a hand and with the caliber of their accomplishments and experience I could not think of a better place to learn to fly control line than with the Knights! Dave will be back and plans to visit the Joust and the next club meeting to join our club. Page 2 (Continued from page 1) has many members that I consider to be great ambassadors of our fine sport and have eagerly offered assistance to any interested party including myself. I remember the day Rich Lopez taught me how to start a 35 with a single flip and Chuck Rudner coaching Mike Costner to fly his first control line flight. Not to forget a mention of Larry Renger back just a couple years ago graciously offering his Plastic Fantastic to Mike Costner and me and many other new pilots. He can actually tell you the amount of crashes this plane has had in its history of it being a ½ A trainer and the plane is still intact! Our club has many generous members that graciously offer their time and experience to new pilots and that means a lot to a new pilot, just ask me as I was one! Thanks to the guys that take the time out of their limited fly time to teach a new pilot our sport. I would imagine that with a little bit of help you can significantly cut down the learning curve down when going it alone. Keep it up guys and lend a hand to a new pilot, you will find it very rewarding I assure you of that! It s also a great way to grow our club s membership. The Joust is right around the corner! August 10-11 just a bit over a week away so get ready and practice-up over the few days and let s get the word out! Pre- Registering is available on our club s site www.kotrc.org The flyer/sign-up form is available at the following link: http://www.kotrc.org/preentryform.php can all aspire to contribute to the club at the level of these fine gentleman have over the years.
