Mount Beauty Secondary College students give back A group of students from Mount Beauty Secondary College volunteered to do some weed removal in Big Hill mountain bike park for the local community give back component of the Future Makers Program taught at Bogong Outdoor Education Centre. The fifteen year 9 students removed blackberry and other invasive weeds from a few specially targeted areas within the park. Team Mount Beauty president, Jenny Kromar, met with the students beforehand to chat about the club and the value of a team effort in getting work done. The group were rewarded with a BBQ at the club sheds at the conclusion of the session followed by a swim at the rock pools. Thank you to these students on behalf of the Team Mount Beauty Committee. 2

OUT OF THE SADDLE with Renate Griese Most memorable bike ride ever Mountain biking in Mont Sainte Anne, Canada, with some skilled riders of the day What bike/s do you currently ride? Felt F4 Road Bike Commencal Flame Mountain Bike affectionately known as 'Spirit' Peugeot, single speed, which doesn't get much use around here And now dreaming of a new mountain bike... Funniest biking memory Riding with Mia (dog) at the Mt Beauty Mountain Bike Park. Now Mia at times was a nervous dog and absolutely hated being around roads and cars. So much so, that after each ride she d slow down to a crawl whenever we d get to the Kiewa Valley Hwy. This was frustrating for me. So to speed things up, I use to pick her up and carry her home in my arms. This worked on most occasions until one particular time her lead escaped my clutches and dangled down getting caught in the cluster. We were moving quickly so breaking time wasn't as fast as hoped. Poor little Mia s head was about to get squished! With only an inch of lead left (the rest tangled around the cluster), all I could see was her front paws in the breaking position, her neck outstretched as far as possible, clenched teeth and a look of fear in her eyes. She survived. 4 A more recent funny moment which makes me laugh every time I picture it is Macca inhaling his apple strudel and coke in record time at Mt Beauty Bakery so he wouldn't miss the bunch riding on to Falls. Favourite bike trails Yikes the road has been dominating over the last six months with my most favourite being Tawonga Gap descent (both sides), Falls descent (front), up the back of Falls and the stretch of road around Anglers Rest. Mt Beauty mountain bike trails are always fun with most favourite, Third Parallel. Junior News Kids Mountain Bike Clinics A very successful season of weekly kids mountain bike clinics have now finished. The clinics proved very popular with 71 kids registered! All the kids improved tremendously throughout the season and I m sure there will be a few champions among them. One of the highlights for the kids was a guest appearance by world champion Paul VDP. The last time Team Mt Beauty ran weekly kids clinics was when Paul was a participant. A big thank you to all the instructors and parent helpers who made the clinics possible. Regulars were Greg, Ron, Bernie, Jenny, Richard, Ian, Paul, Dave, Stu and Cath. Thanks also to all the parents who didn t hesitate to help wherever needed with the skills and games for the younger kids. The number of kids registered far exceeded our expectations - without all the volunteers and helpers it would not have been possible. The feedback from parents and participants has echoed this: The only feedback I have is that the clinics are just fantastic! Very well organised, really supportive with all of the volunteer helpers & my son just loves it. Keep up the great work TMB! I loved the look of excitement on my girls faces when they achieved things they didn't know they could. I thought it was all very well organised. The instructors were awesome. I didn't like getting muddy. I went over a jump that I thought would be scary but it wasn't. So I think you learn more going over higher stuff. It was fun but I want to stay in the same group as Hannah as having a girl in my group was fun. I liked high jumps and I would like to learn more about how to jump higher. Clinics will start again in October. We look forward to seeing you then. Please let us know if you have any feedback on the clinics. Eg time, day, duration, format, groups, 5 location. Cath

Trail Report Colquhoun Forest by Jarrah Forrer Colquhoun forest is only 20 minutes out of Bairnsdale on the road to Lakes Entrance. At the trail head there is a car park, pump track, map, but no toilet - so a bush crap is the only way to go. Straight away I was amazed at the flow, speed and quality of the trails. The Scalectrix Loop was 15km and was marked with yellow arrows. It can be cut in half as it is a figure 8 loop. My favorite tracks were the Sinkhole track, which bumps and dips through small valleys, and the Lollipop track which is a 6 minute gully rollercoaster run with about 20 continuous dips. There are optional a- lines, jumps and rollers, which you can go around. The local mountain bike club (Mtb East Gippsland) have put out rakes randomly around the loop, so you can put back into the awesome tracks. Another great feature was the Strava GO! and FINISH signs.
