Message from our President... Hello fellow SOBS! Board Meeting Minutes 2 Welcome New SOBS & Guests 3 August Birthdays 3 Visiting DJs Info 4 Meet Some of our Members 5 SOS Fall Migration Info 6 Dance / Party Schedule 7 Oak Island Beach Day Photos 8 SOS - Fun Sunday & Monday 9 Well here it s August already and the heat is on! We have two dances this month with Bill Ruth at the VFW, also the club is buying your meal so we need a head count on who all is going to eat. The Dance at the Moose Lodge will feature DJ Joey Warren. Fall Migration SOS is September 12-21 and we will have our FREE POUR on September 13th, Saturday afternoon at the Pavilion with H. Lee Brown. On the first Sunday & Monday of the Fall Migration everyone meets in the street for two of the biggest block parties you have ever seen, Fun Sunday & Fun Monday. On Fun Sunday the party is in the street beside the OD Arcade. Some of the best names in beach & shag music will help you rock the day away with a few thousand of your closest friends. Don t worry if you can t get enough fun in one day because on Monday we do it all over again. For Fun Monday we will pack Main Street from OD to Hillside with every smooth dancing fun loving friend that we can find. There will be great music, dancing in the street, & fun to be had by all. There will also be merchandise vendors, food/drink vendors, & displays set up by the SOS sponsors. See pages 9 & 10 for more info and the bands who will be performing. They are great and best of all it is all free. We have FUN MONDAY tickets for sale at $10 each, so we need your help in selling these tickets because that s what pays for all the bands and entertainment for Fun Sunday & Fun Monday, also the person who sells the winning ticket of $7,500.00 will receive $100.00. See me or one of our officers if you want to purchase tickets or call me at 980-622-7713. REQUEST FROM THE FRONT DOOR Also, it s "OPERATION UPLINK" time! September 26 is fast approaching so it s not too early to start visiting your local retail shops to ask for a donation for our silent auction held during our October 25th dance. These are the shops that you may frequent and maybe some you don t. Joe will be sending out a list of the vendors we talked to last year. This will be the time to sign-up to visit one so we don t have members going to the same business twice. We need all the volunteers we can get to help put with this event. Please help us help our members of the military! Thank you and see you on the dance floor! Please do not give large bills at the door for our dances! Our capability to make change is limited to the small amount in our cash box. The correct fee is always appreciated! Thanks for your consideration! August 2 0 14 T he Be ac h Beat! Pag e 2 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes - July 10, 2014... Present: Robert Carter, Ellen Wester, Pam Bacon, Mamie Brown, Mary Ann Gregory, Butch Underwood Meeting was called to order by Robert at 6:05 pm Secretary s Report: A motion to accept the Secretary s Report of June 5th was made, seconded and approved by the Committee members in attendance. Treasurer s Report: Bill had sent the Treasurers Report. Balance of $3,405.00 (not including $200 in cash box). A motion was made to approve the report and seconded. Old Business: June 27 th dance was back at the Moose Lodge. Robert said he would talk to the Moose about turning on the air before the dance so that it would be cooler when we get there. The new dance floor was nice for the Beach day/shag Contest. It was discussed that the Town of Oak Island could do better with communication of the Beach Day and getting things prepared. It was mentioned that maybe next year we would let the town put down the dance floor. Ted and Gayle Manos who won the shag contest donated their winnings of $300.00 to our shag club. New Business: July 11 th dance is at the VFW and DJ will be Chigger Woods. Dennis and Elaine Faver will be working the door. There was no theme and the food will be snacks. Mamie will teach the Cuban Walk. July 25 th dance will be at the Moose Lodge. The DJ will be Robert Carter, our President. Tim and Janet Waddell will be working the door. There will be no theme. Food can be ordered off the Moose menu. Ellen will be teaching a line dance. The August 8 th dance will be at the VFW and the club will be purchasing the dinner from the VFW. The menu will consist of pulled pork or pulled chicken, coleslaw or potato salad, baked beans. Joe will be sending out an RSVP at a closer date to see what everyone wants to order for the head count. Open Discussion: We discussed Uplink 2014 and we will be getting the packets together and start passing them out at the July 25 th dance and also at the August 8 th dance. When you get your packets you can start trying to sell the tickets and getting donations. There will be more information coming on where we will be collecting and storing the donations. Meeting adjourned 7:08 PM. Next board meeting will be August 7, at 6 PM at the VFW. Minutes Submitted by: Pam Bacon, Secretary

August 2 0 14 T he Be ac h Beat! Pag e 3 WELCOME to our Guests and new Members... Ted and Gayle Manos won the Oak Island Beach Day Shag Contest and donated $300 back to the club. For the club s July 25 th dance at the Moose Lodge our attendance was 51 SOBS and 11 guests as we enjoyed the tunes played by our club president, DJ Robert Carter. Refreshments and food was available for purchase thru the Moose Lodge grill. Mark your calendars for Friday, September 26, 2014 at the Moose Lodge for our Annual Project Uplink Fundraiser! Again, Fessa John Hook will be playing beach music from his extensive collection. As the largest organization of combat veterans, VFW knows the importance of keeping military families in touch. That's why in 1996 VFW launched the VFW Operation Uplink program - the premiere calling program for deployed service members that provides free phone time to active-duty military personnel and hospitalized veterans. Operation Uplink initially provided calling cards to deployed and hospitalized troops, but on Mother's Day 2006, due to the growing popularity of the program and thanks to the generosity of corporate donors like Sport Clips and Harleysville Insurance, the program began hosting "Free Call Days."

August 2 0 14 T he Be ac h Beat! Pag e 4 August DJ Information... Fellow SOBS, I hope that you are enjoying the opportunities to dance so far this year. Katy and I are continuing to go down on Sunday afternoons to the OD Pavilion for dancing and its great beachside atmosphere. Chigger Woods and Robert Carter kept our the dance floor full in July. Playing for us this August are: Wild Bill Ruth at the VFW Friday, August 8th and The Little Man of Beach Music Joey Warren, Friday, August 22nd, at the Moose Lodge Playing our first August dance will be former club President Bill Ruth. He and his wife Carol, formerly of Oak Island, now live in Little River, SC. They are both excellent dancers! Bill plays often in North Myrtle Beach at Fat Harold s Beach Club and at the OD Pavilion and he has been associated with Beach and Shag music for the last 30+ years. His beach music tastes are grounded in the traditional oldies of Beach and Boogie. Come out for a great evening. Joey Warren is from Clinton, North Carolina and is now a full time DJ. He is known as the Little Man of Beach Music. He and his wife, Rebecca also look great on the dance floor. In beach music for many years he plays the whole spectrum of music from the classics to the New Carolina Beach Music. Joey has played for us for many years and always brings a great evening of dance music and entertaining showmanship, so plan on having fun! I hope that all are enjoying the summer, the DJ s and opportunities for dancing as much as we are. SOS and Project Uplink are right around the corner. During SOS our club will be having its traditional Free Pour at the Ocean Drive Pavilion Saturday, September 13 th, from 2pm until the money is gone. So come down and enjoy a few drinks on the Club. Please get the word out for donations for our Project Uplink as it is our opportunity to show our servicemen who are sacrificing so much for us how much we care. Katy and I would like to thank the club and our members for the cards and kind words after the passing of Katy s mom. We are lucky to be a part of this caring community. John Hutton, DJ Selection From our Friends at Coastal Shag Club... Our dances are 7:00 to 10:30 PM with a FREE Shag or Line Dance lesson starting at 6:30 PM. August 2 0 14 T he Be ac h Beat! Pag e 5 Meet some of our Members... Tim & Janet Waddell met at Parents Without Partners in 1994 and just celebrated their 20th anniversary this month. Between them, they have four children and two grandchildren. They moved from West Chester, Pennsylvania to Brunswick County (Palmetto Creek) shortly after they retired in mid- September 2012. Tim was a CNC programmer for a stainless steel producer and Janet was a legal assistant. Tim likes to golf, bicycle and play tennis. Janet enjoys singing with the church choir and with Traveling Serendipity, an ecumenical group in Brunswick County, as well as attending exercise classes at Brunswick Community College's fitness center. They both enjoy a variety of group activities in their community. They heard about shag dancing when they first vacationed in North Myrtle Beach in 2004 and finally were able to connect with the SOBS and take lessons from John and Katy at Chasers shortly after their move to Brunswick County. They joined the club right after their first lesson and subsequent first dance. They took further lessons with Chuck and Sandy. (They feel they still have a lot to learn!) They like the relaxed atmosphere of the shag club dances and activities and the friendly people. They hope the club continues to thrive and would love to have the club explore other venues. We especially have enjoyed the extra Sunday afternoon dances at Rumors in Oak Island. SOS Top Secret Information... Butch Underwood currently has a limited number of 2014 SOS Cards available (and he can get more!). If you have an interest in attending the 2014 Fall Migration in North Myrtle Beach (September 12-21), let him know. If you attend any venue (there are at least eight!) without a Card, it will cost you $10. The Cards are only $30 each and will allow you into any of these functions FREE!!! You will not need a card for our FREE POUR event at the OD Pavilion. Please look at the explanation of SOS Dance Venues later on in this Newsletter. This offer will expire on September 1, 2014.
