THE BRAVES BEAT Borden Jr./Sr. High School January 2018 Volume 12 Issue 4 FLU SEASON IS HERE!!! Parents: The flu season is upon us. In an effort to keep our students healthy, please ensure the following: 1. Call and make your school clinic aware of any FLU positive test results. We honor your privacy, and do not share names with anyone, but we monitor the number of cases and notify the Clark County Health Department if the percentage reaches a set threshold. We also work with the custodial staff to give areas extra cleaning as needed. 2. If your student has a fever, (anything 100.0 or higher) they must be fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of fever reducing medications before returning. 3. We are also seeing stomach viruses. If your student is vomiting or having diarrhea, he/she must be episode free for 24 hours before returning to school. Western Royalty Crowned! Homecoming ceremonies were held December 30th with a Western theme! Congratulations to our 2017-2018 Queen and King Josie Voyles and Lucas McNew.

$CHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIE$ Guidance Updates from Mrs. Cavins Seniors wishing to further their education are encouraged to complete scholarship applications as they become available. The most recent scholarship to become available is the James Holt Scholarship. One senior from Borden WILL receive a $10,000 scholarship. Applications are due to Mrs. Cavins by March 1st. Several other scholarships are currently available as well. Phi Beta PSI State Scholarship and the PHI BETA PSI Theta IOTA Chapter Scholarship, Clark County REMC for students planning to attend IUS, Ivy Tech, or Purdue Polytechnic, and the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Scholarship. Scholarship bins are located outside the office doors. Students are highly encouraged to check the bins weekly for any new additions. Even small scholarships can help offset the cost of postsecondary education. Who s ready for spring? To date, we only have to make up two snow days. The make-up days for January 12th and 16th will be March 19th and March 20th. Please plan accordingly. Additional make-up days if necessary, will be March 21st- 23rd, May 4th. Any additional days will be added to the end of the school year.

PATRIOTIC COLLABORATION The boys basketball season opener with Eastern High School kicked off with a patriotic flare. Both teams stood side by side as the national anthem was performed by students from both Borden and Eastern. What an awesome night! Pictured above: Regan Weatherford (EWHS), Josey Cheatham (BHS), Kirsten Weatherford (EWHS), Hannah Ray (BHS), and Megan Weatherford (EWHS) UPCOMING SECTIONAL DATES Basketball season is well underway. Tournament time will be here before we know it. Girls Sectional will be held at South Central High School January 30th, February 2nd, and February 3rd. The tourney draw will be held Sunday, January 21st. Borden High School is once again fortunate to host the Boys Sectional. Sectional dates will be February 27th, March 2nd and 3rd. The draw for boys is February 18th. ANNUAL CHAMPIONS TOGETHER EVENT TO BE HELD JANUARY 27th Each year the Student Athletic Advisory Committee sponsors a special evening for our students with special abilities. Champions Together is a collaborative partnership between the IHSAA and Special Olympics that promotes servant leadership among student athletes and those with intellectual disabilities. Please join us for a fun-filled evening. Donations will be taken for Indiana Special Olympics during the game.

DOING GOOD IN OUR COMMUNITIES! Students from the work program visited several nursing homes during the holiday season. They were proud to deliver socks and sing carols for the residents. Mrs. Lewellen s culinary classes were recruited by UPS Clarksville to prepare their Christmas meal.

PEP BAND/CHEER TAKE HOME HARDWARE! The Pep Band and Cheer squad joined forces to participate in the Orleans Pep Band Contest. Borden took 2nd place honors missing first place by one point. Congratulations to both groups!

The 2018-2019 school calendar is below. Students first day will be August 8th. Please note the changes to fall and spring breaks.
