Fishing Local The City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series Big Guns weekend brought out the big tackle with most boats going home satisfied and some very good captures. On his first outing since joining the club, Nick Lorenz (right) fishing on Dave Gray s Buddha boated a pending samson fish of 29.76kg on 10kg tackle, a whopper of a fish. Whilst doing the mandatory pot pulling around 5 Fathom Bank they were surrounded by sharks and scored points with them as well. Nick Lorenz again, catching two which both eclipsed the double line class rule for 24kg tackle! Ben Weston (left), as part of the same team, caught a 117cm yellowtail kingfish which weighed in at a shade under 12kg. Deon van der Westhuizen and crew aboard Striker also fishing on Saturday, targeted samson fish, with their best of the day being Chris Strydom s 131cm fish that would have been expected to tip the scales at close to 31kg. Sunday s forecast deterred a few teams but Rock N Roll got amongst the sambos with their only scoring fish for the comp being Phil Volich s 100cm specimen. Small southern bluefin and yellowfin tuna are starting to show up north and south of Rottnest, hopefully they will hang around a bit like they did in 2012 and provide great light tackle fishing well into autumn. Outside of the comp Alex Smith nailed a 30kg sambo and Carl Babarskas fought for 35 minutes in 90m of water on 4kg, to land a pending world record samson of 13.96kg. 15 th December 2014 Hook-Up Page 1
Pending Captures The past month must go down as a record month for records. With the start of the new season and the continued run of salmon, members have been making the most of record capture opportunities off Perth. In a flurry of activity over the last four weeks alone, captures by PGFC members have resulted in no less than seven pending s and a range of pending State and National records to go with them. This is on top of the two confirmed s caught earlier this year. The latest pending record fish were caught on the weekend of the first City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series for the season. The phenomenal salmon run has added to these records, as has the club spirit with members encouraging each other to get after the record fish and helping each other identify likely spots. There was certainly some action with samson fish, yellowtail kingfish and bronze whalers joining in. All except a yellowtail king fish, kept for the table and a pending samson were released in good condition. Anglers also picked up club championship points for fish caught on lighter line classes including a pending samson on 4kg. Deckie Day The club is looking at running a deckie training day informally over the next few weeks. Anyone that is keen to learn the basics of outriggers, lures and other basic skills please contact the club at contact@pgfc.com.au The next event in this series is on the weekend of 7 th & 8 th March a species comp, the target of which will be decided ahead of the comp depending on what is around at the time. Website As part of the Club s effort to provide members with a better experience, the club website is undergoing change. The addition of a MEMBERS ONLY page includes a forum solely for member interaction, whether to make a comment on a club related activity, seek out an extra crew member, post a photo or relate a story, it is there for members to use. Just click on the Members Only tab on the top right of the menu. This part of the website will go live before Xmas and all members will be advised. There will be many other subtle changes over the next few months, all making for a more usable and relevant website for members.
