L 3-4 GAME NOTES GUSTAVUS EMBARKS ON 75TH SEASON OF MEN S HOCKEY One of the most storied programs in collegiate men s hockey, Gustavus Adolphus College embarked on its 75th season with an all-time record of 863-641-81 and a mark of 573-436-50 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, including 14 league championships. The Gusties have earned a place in the NCAA Division III Tournament six times, which includes a runner-up finish in 2009. Gustavus first recognized a men s hockey team in 1937 when then Director of Physical Education George Myrum became interested in the sport and raised the funds to sponsor a team. The Gusties fell to Carleton in their first ever intercollegiate game in 1936 and it would take until 1939, the first year Gustavus played on natural ice in the on-campus fieldhouse, for Gustavus to record the first victory in the program s history. Gustavus went without a hockey team for a few years during World War II and was unable to attract enough players in 1951 and 1963, resulting in lost seasons. But in 1964, Athletics Director Lloyd Hollingsworth asked Don Roberts to restart the program and he accepted even though he had never played or coached hockey prior to taking over the reins of the fledgling Gustavus program. In Roberts first season at the helm of the hockey program, the Golden Gusties skated to a record of 1-14 before quickly becoming a dominant force in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), securing 12 of the next 13 league titles. Roberts teams also had success on the national stage, where they finished in the top four at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championships for 10 consecutive years (1968-77). Gustavus finished second at the NAIA championships three times 1972, 1975, and 1977. After Gustavus joined the NCAA in 1980, Roberts Gusties would go on to play in the NCAA national tournament seven times, including an appearance in the Frozen Four in 1982 (where they finished third). Roberts coached the Golden Gusties to an overall record of 532-290-25 in 33 seasons (1964-97) and his teams claimed 13 league titles. His 532 wins currently rank 20th all-time across all divisions of college hockey and sixth in Division III. Under the tutelage of 19 head coaches, the Gusties are nearing the program s 900th win with a winning percentage of.571. Gustavus boasts 46 All-Americans in its 75-season history, including one AHCA Player of the Year in David Martinson (2010). GUSTAVUS COACHING STAFF Brett Petersen enters his 17th season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men s hockey team for the 2016-17 season. In his 16-year tenure behind the Gustavus bench, Petersen has compiled a 212-171-45 overall record. His 212 wins at Gustavus rank second behind legendary coach Don Roberts. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice, once in 2001-02 after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, and again in 2009-10 after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC title since 1993. While at Gustavus, Petersen has worked with 18 All-Conference players, three MIAC Player of the Year recipients, eight AHCA All- Americans and one National Player of the Year (David Martinson, 2010). Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State. Former men s hockey player Rory Dynan is in his second season as the assistant men s hockey coach at Gustavus. A 2010 graduate of Gustavus, Dynan is a former forward for the Gusties and a native of Maple Plaine, Minn. During his three seasons wearing the three-crowned sweater, Dynan played in 72 games, recording 24 goals and 23 assists for 47 points. Dynan was a member of the 2008-09 team that made it all the way to

LAST SEASON AT A GLANCE The Gustavus men s hockey team had a down year last season as it posted a 6-14-5 overall record and 5-8-3 mark in the MIAC. The five wins in the MIAC matched the 2014-15 campaign. For the second straight season, the Gusties missed the playoffs after posting a string of 13 consecutive MIAC Playoff appearances as well as a streak of seven straight winning seasons. Although no Gustie made the MIAC All-Conference Team, Chris Amsden (So., St. Peter, Minn.) was named to the All-Rookie Team. Amsden completed his rookie campaign wearing the three-crowned sweater with 13 games played and 12 starts. He posted a 2.62 goals against average,.911 save percentage, and a 2-8-2 overall record both his goals against average and save percentage ranked fourth in the MIAC. The local St. Peter product allowed 35 goals and made 358 saves after logging 801:36 between the pipes. The Gusties play 11 of its games at home at Don Roberts Ice Rink. LAST TIME THEY MET - GUSTIES VS. YELLOWJACKETS The Gustavus men s hockey team put forth a hard-fought effort JAN. 15, 2016 at Don Roberts Ice Rink, but came out on the wrong side of a 2-1 decision against UW-Superior. Four minutes into the first period, Gustavus got its first scoring threat as Evan Erickson (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) hit the top of the pipe, but the puck deflected away. Nearly two minutes later, Sam Majka (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.) and Jared Docken (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) both contributed on the assists as Van Sullivan (Fy., Brentwood, Tenn.) gathered a rebound and put the puck past UW-Superior goalie Ethan Wood s right pad at the 14:20 mark for a 1-0 lead. Gustavus nearly led 2-0 after Jake Bushey (So., Duluth, Minn.) went for a shot from the point and Jake McCann (So., Shoreview, Minn.) received the deflection on the right side with an open net, but tripped and could not get a clean shot off. The Yellowjackets scored the equalizer as Anton Svennson took the puck off the boards and fired a clean shot from the left circle into the top-right corner of the net, making it a 1-1 game with 4:37 remaining in the first. The Gusties were able to kill off a UW-Superior power play to end the first and the two squads skated into the intermission tied 1-1. The second period went scoreless as Gustavus took four shots compared to eight by the Yellowjackets. Both teams limited scoring opportunities with a more physical play than in the first period. Nearly four minutes into the third period, UW-Superior scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a shot from the point that found its way past Gustavus goalie Erik Johnson s (Jr., Sauk Rapids, Minn.) left shoulder for a 2-1 advantage, which held for the remainder of the game. Johnson suffered the loss after making 24 saves. UW-Superior outshot Gustavus 26-20, while the Gusties went 34-of-70 on the draw. Neither team scored on the power play as Gustavus went 0-4 and UW-Superior went 0-5. LAST TIME THEY MET - GUSTIES VS. FALCONS The Gustavus Adolphus College men s hockey team was defeated 3-0 by No. 13 University of Wisconsin-River Falls Jan. 16, 2016 at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties fought hard in the first period, but it wasn t enough as they allowed three Falcon goals in a span of 4:57. The first goal came from UW-River Falls Joe Drapluk at 12:57, tallying his third goal of the season. The second goal came during a Falcon power play, off the stick of Christian George, his fifth of the season, at the 15:49 mark. The last shot of the period was from Kyle Gattelaro as he scored his seventh goal of the season at 17:54, which put the Gusties down 3-0 to conclude first period. During the second period Gustavus improved its defense, holding the Falcons scoreless during the frame, but the Gusties also went scoreless and the score remained 3-0 after 40 minutes of play. UW-River Falls had the advantage over the Black and Gold, as the Gusties totaled three shots on goal versus 11 from the Falcons throughout the period. In the final period the Gusties were able to fight off a 5-on-3, but the game ended with a final score of 3-0, with Gustavus putting 18 shots on goal versus 30 from the Falcons in total. Chris Amsden (Fy., St. Peter, Minn.) gave up three goals in the first period, but settled down and held the Falcons scoreless for the remainder of the game. Amsden finished with 27 saves.

HEAD COACH BRETT PETERSEN 17th Season 213-179-49 at Gustavus Office: 507-933-7615 Email: bpeters4@gustavus.edu Brett Petersen enters his 17th season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men s hockey team for the 2016-17 season. While at Gustavus, Petersen has worked with 18 All-Conference players, three MIAC Player of the Year recipients, eight AHCA All-Americans and one National Player of the Year (David Martinson, 2010). Petersen, a Roseville, Minnesota native, started his coaching career with the St. Paul Vulcans of the United States Hockey League (USHL) from 1992-1994. He was named assistant coach at St. Cloud State University of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) in the spring of 1994. During his six years at St. Cloud State, he coordinated the recruiting process for head coach Craig Dahl, while also being closely involved with practice planning, player development and bench coaching. In the classroom, Petersen received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State. He was a four-year letter winner in hockey while at Denver and was named to the WCHA All-Academic team for three years. Petersen served as the team s assistant captain during his junior and senior seasons. Petersen had the opportunity to represent USA Hockey on several difference occasions during his playing career including the U.S. Olympic Festival in Oklahoma City in 1990 and the World University Games in Sapporo, Japan in 1991. He was drafted by the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL), but did not play professional hockey. Along with his coaching duties at Gustavus, Petersen s responsibilities include managing Lund Arena, the College s multi-purpose facility that houses the ice sheet from October through March for team practices and games. The facility is then used for physical education classes, concerts and conventions the rest of the year. Brett lives in St. Peter with his wife, Linda, and their daughters, Katherine and Natalie.
