Friday s game will start at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday s is set for a 4:07 p.m. start. LAST SEASON: St. Cloud State was 5-29-2 overall in 2011-12 and 4-26-0 in the WCHA, good for 7th place. TEAM CAPTAINS: Senior forward Alex Nelson (Andover, Minn.) will wear the captain s C for the 2012-13 season. Senior Haylea Schmid (Oak Grove, Minn.) and Senior Katie Allen (Red Deer, Alberta) will don the A as alternate captains. LOOKING FORWARD: St. Cloud State returns 19 players from last season only loosing three seniors last year. The Huskies are returning 96 of its 114 points (36g, 60a) scored during the 2011-12 season. LEADING THE WAY: Junior Molli Mott returns after leading the Huskies in goals (10g, 4a) as well as sophomore Abby Ness who led the Huskies in assists (2 g, 12a) last season. Also, returning is senior Captain Alex Nelson (7g, 4a), junior forward Julia Gilbert (2g, 7a), and goalie, rookie of the year recipient Julie Friend (599 svs). SENIOR LEADERSHIP: With the biggest class listed on the roster the Huskies hope to get great play and leadership this season out of their senior class which includes Katie Allen (Red Deer, Alberta), Haylea Schmid (Oak Grove, Minn.), Kylie Lane (Roseau, Minn.), Lisa Martinson (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Alex Nelson (Andover, Minn.), Callie Dahl (Stillwater, Minn.), Ellie Sitek (Edina, Minn.), and Anna Donlan (Hillsboro, Wis.), who is a two-sport athlete also competing for St. Cloud State volleyball. JUNIOR CLASS: Julia Gilbert (Hermantown), Sydney Burghardt (Medicine Hat, AB) and Molli Mott (Colorado Springs, Colo.) return for their third season on the front line. Returning to defend the blue line are Amanda Monkman (Roseau), Michelle Burke (London, Ontario), and Cari Coen (Manhatten Beach, Calif.). SOPHOMORES LOOK TO SHINE: With a year of collegiate hockey now under their belts, the sophomores look to step up big for the Huskies in 2012-13. The sophomores include Julie Friend (Minnetonka, Minn.), Audrey Hanmer (Forest Lake, Minn.), Amy Olson (Roseau, Minn.), Amanda Arbogast (Virginia, Minn.), Abby Ness (Roseau, Minn.), and Kalli Funk (Roseville, Minn.). NEW FACES: St. Cloud State welcomes seven new faces to the team in 2012-13. One of the new faces is sophomore forward Kalli Funk. Funk is a transfer student from Niagara University where she played last season. Funk recorded seven goals and five assists at Niagara University. The Huskies also add six first year players Hanna Brodt (Roseville, Minn.), whose father played hockey at St. Cloud State from 1986-90 and her aunt was the first women s hockey coach at SCSU. Joining Brodt as a forward will be Vanessa Spataro (Stouffville, Ontario) who played for the Toronto Junior Aeros. Defensively, the Huskies welcome Skye Kelly (Brandon, Manitoba), Jenna Redford (Soldotna, Alaska), and Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis.). Kelly, a standout blueliner for Balmoral Hall posted 10 goals and 14 assists in her senior year. Redford earned a spot on the team after trying out this fall and previously played for the Boston Shamrocks. Smith comes to SCSU after playing at Rice Lake High school. At goalie the Huskies welcome Katie Fitzgerald (Des Plaines, Ill.), who previously played for the Chicago Mission AAA team. MINNESOTA BRIEFLY: 2011-12: 34-5-2, 21-5-2 (WCHA/2nd) 2012-13: 2-0-0, 0-0-0 Series: Minnesota currently leads the series between the two teams 51-3-2. SCSU COACHING STAFF: HEAD COACH JEFF GIESEN: Jeff Giesen completed his sixth season at the helm of Husky Hockey in 2011-12. The all-time winningest coach in school history, Giesen is the third head coach since the inception of the women s program in 1998. Giesen tallied his first career victory against Robert Morris on Sept. 29, 2006, with a 4-0 shutout in the NHC. Giesen s career coaching record stands at 66-127-27 with a 45-106-19 mark in the ever grueling WCHA. A 1993 and 2010 graduate of St. Cloud State University, Coach Giesen and his wife Karla reside in St. Cloud, Minn., Giesen with their two daughters Delaney and Maleah. ASSISTANT COACH JIM FETTER: Originally from Waterloo, Ont., Jim Fetter comes to St. Cloud State with 25 years of coaching experience. Jim enters his second season with the Huskies this year. Before coming to St. Cloud State he was the head women s hockey coach for eight seasons at Wayne State University before the University opted to eliminate its women s hockey program in the spring of 2011. A three-time recipient of the College Hockey America Women s Coach of the Year Award, he was also a finalist for the American Fetter Hockey Coaches Association Women s Division I Coach of the Year Award in 2006 before earning the award in 2008. In eight seasons with the Wayne State Warriors, Fetter amassed a record of 117-123-24 (.489) and 47 College Hockey Association victories. ASSISTANT COACH BRITA BRAGNALO: Brita Bragnalo is starting off her second official season with the Huskies after completing her first season as interim assistant coach for women s hockey at St. Cloud State in 2010-11. A familiar face to St. Cloud State women s hockey, Bragnalo was a four-year standout on the blue-line for the Huskies from 2005-09. Serving as the team captain for her senior stint in 2008-09, Bragnalo charted 29 points (6g, 23a) in the Cardinal and Black and is tied for fifth all-time with 145 career games Bragnalo St. Cloud State University Women s Hockey 2012-13 - Page 2 played. Bragnalo served as a student assistant coach for St. Cloud State women s hockey during the 2009-10 season one of the most successful seasons in school history, finishing third in the WCHA regular season standings for the first time in school and league history. Bragnalo s most recent coaching experience before SCSU was at Shattuck St. Mary s Prep School during the fall of 2010 in Faribault, Minn., where she served as the assistant girls hockey coach for the defending national champion U-16 team.
