Brevard Tornados Men s Basketball at Tusculum Tuesday, November 24, 2015-8:00 p.m. Greeneville, Tenn. (Pioneer Arena) 0-3 (0-0 SAC) 2-1 (0-0 SAC) QUICK HITS TODAY S MATCHUP 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Miles Leathers needs six points to pass Gaither Hendrix for fifth on Brevard s NCAA-era scoring list. Leathers enters the game with 876 career points. Alex Moe has scored 35 points, collected 19 rebounds, and shot 50.0 percent from the field in the last two games. Brevard has a better field goal percentage than its opponent in all three games this season. The Tornados won the rebounding battle last Tuesday at Pfeiffer after outrebounding their opponents in five of 29 games last season. Tusculum head coach Michael Jones coached the Tornados for 12 years, presiding over the school s transition to a four-year institution and then from the NAIA to the NCAA ranks. Jones led the Tornados to a 21-10 mark in the 2009-10 season, the 2010 Food Lion SAC Tournament championship, and the program s only NCAA Tournament appearance. Tusculum has not blocked a shot this season after averaging 3.6 per game last season. Brevard at Tusculum Series History (since 2003): Tusculum leads 11-7 Last Meeting: Brevard 81-79 on January 7, 2015 Last Meeting in Greeneville: Same Brevard looks for its first win of the season on Tuesday night in Tennessee in the 2015-16 season South Atlantic Conference opener. Brevard is 0-3 on the young season after a loss at Pfeiffer a week ago. The Tornados trailed by 14 with 5:35 remaining but forced the Falcons to go 0-for-6 from the field down the stretch, closing to within two points with a 14-2 run in a 4:55 span. The Falcons iced the game at the free throw line, pulling away for a 73-68 win in Misenheimer. By the Numbers BC TC Scoring Off. 69.0 83.0 Scoring Def. 77.7 83.0 FG Pct. 45.6 43.2 FG Pct. Margin -7.0-0.7 Steals 7.3 6.3 Blocks 3.7 0.0 While much of the preseason buzz centered on preseason second team allconference selection Miles Leathers and Division I transfer Demarcus Threatt, senior center Alex Moe has a convincing case to be considered the team s most impressive performer in the early going. Moe has exploded onto the scene in Brevard s last two games, accounting for 35 points and 19 rebounds in the losses to Southern Wesleyan and Pfeiffer. Tuesday s opponent features a familiar face on the sidelines. Pioneers head coach Michael Jones spent 12 seasons shepherding Brevard from its first season as a four-year institution to the 2010 NCAA Tournament after a dramatic run to the SAC Tournament championship. Jones is entering his fifth year in Greeneville and has the pieces in place to make 2015-16 his best year with the Pioneers. Chase Mounce earned first team preseason all-conference honors after a second team selection last season. He is tied for second on the team in both points and rebounds and presents matchup problems with his 6 10 frame. Darius Carter, making his return to the lineup after missing last season due to injury, Javon Price, and Matt Shown make Tusculum a very talented team. 8 Tusculum has made at least one threepointer in 779 of its last 780 games. BREVARD S LAST GAME TUSCULUM S LAST GAME THE LAST MEETING PFEIFFER 73, BREVARD 68 November 17, 2015 MISENHEIMER, N.C. The Tornados made a furious comeback against Pfeiffer on Tuesday night, but the homestanding Falcons converted on five of their six free throw attempts over the final 29 seconds to ice the game and earn a 73-68 victory. Brevard (0-3) trailed 66-52 on a jumper by Pfeiffer s (2-1) AJ Clark with 5:35 remaining. It was the last field goal the Falcons would make in the contest. Pfeiffer went 0-for-6 from the field over the game s final five minutes, opening the door for the Brevard comeback. Miles Leathers, who reached the 400-rebound plateau for his career after a team-high eight boards, scored eight points down the stretch in the 14-2 Tornados run that trimmed Pfeiffer s lead to two points with 30 seconds remaining. But what the Falcons were unable to do from the field they accomplished at the free throw line, stretching their lead while denying the Tornados quality chances on the defensive end over the game s final moments. Brevard opened the game shooting at a torrid pace, making five of its first eight field goal attempts to race out to an advantage that reached eight points in the early going. Alex Moe had each of the Tornados first eight points on two triples and a slick reverse layup on a beautiful feed from Stevie Williams. But the Falcons soon found their stride, embarking on a 21-9 run that gave Pfeiffer a 23-19 advantage with just under seven minutes to play in the half. Three minutes later, Pfeiffer scored seven straight points punctuated by a layup following one of Brevard s 12 first-half turnovers. The Tornados remained within striking distance over the rest of the half, and Demarcus Threatt s slashing layup high off the backboard cut the deficit to two possessions as the Falcons took a 38-32 advantage into the intermission. The Tornados shot 50.0 percent from the field while limiting Pfeiffer to 39.1 percent, but the Falcons took 18 more shots over the course of the game. The discrepancy in shots was aided by 24 Tornados turnovers. Brevard was dominant in the paint, holding a 36-22 advantage. While Clark, the second-leading scorer in Conference Carolinas, was held nearly 14 points below his scoring average, the Pfeiffer bench stepped up to fill the void, contributing 25 of the Falcons 73 points. Leathers led the team with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Moe, Threatt, and Omar El Diraoui. Moe has accounted for 35 points and 19 rebounds over the last two contests after notching his first career double-double against Southern Wesleyan on Saturday. The Tornados held a 36-31 rebounding advantage, the first time this season that the Tornados have outrebounded their opponent. Tuesday s win was the Falcons sixth consecutive home victory, a streak that dates back to January 24. The Tornados were denied their fourth straight regular-season road victory and drops Brevard to 2-2 in its last four matchups against Conference Carolinas competition. TUSCULUM 89, BLUEFIELD STATE 81 November 19, 2015 BLUEFIELD, W.Va. The Tusculum College men s basketball team closed out the game with a 14-4 run as the Pioneers defeated Bluefield State College 89-81 Thursday night at Schott Gymnasium. The Pioneers (2-1) placed five players in double figure scoring for a second straight game led by junior Chase Mounce s 20-point performance. Mounce shot 7-of-8 from the floor and hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Javon Price added a season-high 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Gunnar Beamer poured in a careerbest 17 points as he sparked the TC run late in the contest. Senior Darius Carter posted a double-double with his 13 points and career-high 10 assists, while Matt Shown was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor for his 10 points, while also grabbing five boards. Tusculum jumped out to a 13-4 lead to start the game as Price scored 11 markers in the first 4:52, including three 3-pointers. But the Big Blues (0-2) answered that TC run with a 19-2 spurt to take a 23-17 advantage. The Pioneers responded with a 16-5 run, including three-pointers from Beamer and Price as TC regained the lead at 31-28. But back came Bluefield State as the home team scored five unanswered to lead 33-31, including a three-point play by Chas Harvey with 2:35 left in the half. Tusculum followed with a 7-2 run and looked to be heading into the locker room with the lead, but BSC s Joshua Windham hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 38-38. The Pioneers opened the second half with a 7-1 run to lead 45-39 thanks to a pair of Beamer treys. But similar to the first period, the Big Blues scored eight straight to take a 47-45 advantage following a Windham three-pointer with 17:03 left in the game. TC took the lead on a three-pointer from freshman Zach Hartle to kick start a 9-2 run for a 54-49 Tusculum lead with 15:16 left. Bluefield State knotted the game at 54-54 with 14:34 to go after a three-pointer by Windham. TC got back-to-back buckets from Shown to retake a 58-54 advantage. With Tusculum lead 62-58 with 10:25 remaining on the clock, Bluefield State mustered a 10-0 run, including five straight points from Avery Holiday as the Big Blues led 68-62 with 7:47 left. TC junior Cory Fagan connected on a huge three-pointer to begin an 11-4 Tusculum run, which included a pair of three-point plays by Carter as Tusculum led again 73-72 with 4:36 on the scoreboard. Derrek Farr posted a three-pointer for the Big Blues to take the lead again at 75-73, but Beamer tied the game at 75-75 as he made two of three free throws with 3:54 to go. BSC s Julian Hernandez canned a jumper with 3:31 left to give the home team a 77-75 advantage. From there, it was all Tusculum as the Pioneers scored seven in a row, including Beamer s game-tying layup and Carter made one of two free throws as TC took the lead for good at 78-77 with 2:43 left. Down the stretch, Tusculum made seven of its eight free throw attempts, while Mounce made a pair of buckets as the Pioneers came away with the road victory. Windham led all scorers with 21 points, while Harvey added 20 points and seven rebounds. Holliday and Hernandez finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively for the Big Blues. Tusculum finished the game shooting 48.4 percent from the field, including 17-of-29 in the second half for 58.6 percent. Bluefield State ended the contest firing 43.9 percent, while out-rebounding the Pioneers by a 42-36 margin. Carter matched a career-high with his five steals as he shot 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. BREVARD 81, TUSCULUM 79 January 7, 2015 GREENEVILLE, Tenn.. Trevon Shaw scored a career-high 34 points on Wednesday night in a conference matchup at Tusculum. None were more important than the last two. Shaw connected on a layup in transition with 2.3 seconds left, lifting the Tornados (4-9, 2-5 SAC) to a nail-biting 81-79 win over the Pioneers (1-11, 1-6 SAC) on their home floor. The Tornados finished the game on a 12-4 run, tying the score with 20.4 seconds to play on a pair of Phil Wallace free throws. Tusculum s Mason Fox missed a contested shot in the paint as the clock ticked beneath nine seconds that was rebounded by Darius Moose. Moose then lofted a long outlet pass to Miles Leathers sprinting down the sideline. He drew in the defender as he drove the left side of the lane, then found Shaw on the right block with a perfectly-timed bounce pass. Shaw s layup in traffic clanked off the rim twice before falling through, breaking a 79-79 tie. Moose would bat away a pass as time expired to seal the victory. The Tornados spent the bulk of the game attempting to climb out of deep deficits. Their most significant escape act came in the form of a 10-1 run that spanned the game s final 4:05. A defense that was porous for much of the game clamped down, forcing the Pioneers to go 0-for-6 from the field during the decisive stretch after allowing Tusculum to shoot 58.7 over the game s first 36 minutes. Shaw scored 17 points in each half in a dominant individual performance. He made 11 of his 16 field goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, and had five rebounds. Shaw also snatched a game-high three steals, contributing to Brevard s 18-6 disparity in turnovers forced and 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Although Shaw was the star, the Tornados played well as a unit. The team combined for 19 assists on 27 made baskets, and every Brevard starter had at least three assists. Brayden Masten dished out a team-high six dimes in a complete performance that included seven points, five rebounds, and all three of Brevard s blocked shots on the evening. Tusculum was led by Javon Price, who scored a career-high 29 points and had a pair of assists. Guard Mason Fox failed to get into the scoring column, but shattered his career high by accounting for half of Tusculum s 20 assists. Tusculum opened the game by connecting on seven of its 10 first-half three-point field goal attempts en route to 42-32 lead at the break. The Pioneers led by as many as 13 points early in the second half before a 24-9 run gave Brevard a brief two-point lead midway through the stanza. The key in the final 20 minutes was Brevard s incredible ability to turn Tusculum s turnovers into points. The Tornados forced eight of their turnovers between the start of the second half and Moose batting away Tusculum s desperation pass on the final play. Brevard was able to turn six of those eight possessions into points, pouring in 17 points following second-half takeaways. The Pioneers came into the contest on a six-game losing skid with its lone win of the season coming in the team s first meeting with Brevard at Boshamer Gymnasium on November 25. Wednesday s win gave Brevard its fourth victory in the last five contest over the Pioneers, which includes last year s televised 101-90 victory. The Tornados were facing Pioneers head coach Michael Jones for the eighth time since he stepped down from leading Brevard s program to take the reins in Greeneville, with the Tornados coming away victorious in half of the contests. Jones spent 12 seasons at the helm in Brevard, leading the Tornados transition to a four-year school and from NAIA to NCAA status. He led the program to its lone NCAA Tournament appearance following a SAC Tournament championship in 2010. After competing as a two-year institution for decades, Brevard joined the NAIA in the fall of 1999 when the college began offering four-year degrees. Accurate records have been kept since the 2008-09 season, Brevard s first as a full NCAA Division II member.
