MIDWEST SENIOR CLASSIC December 7, 2006 Season 13,Issue 5 Roger Thompson Wins 2nd Title What is the Midwest Senior Classic? The MSC is an organized group that promotes and holds monthly scratch tournaments for the senior bowler (50 years of age and older). The format is: A one day, same day payout, a qualifying round of 8 match games ( random), with the 8 th game being a position round. Each game is worth 40 points to the winner. These games will be followed by a 4 game stepladder, which will always have at least one super senior. The first stepladder game always has three players, all starting on the same lane, with the winner advancing to meet the next high player, etc, until the 4 th game which is the title match. Cashing is 1 for 2, including 1 for 2 for super seniors (over 60). From the super senior payout, there is a 1 for 2 payout to super duper seniors (70 or older). Entry fee is $80 for members, $85 for nonmembers, $50 for first time ever entrants. Membership is $40. $5 from each membership and $4 from each tournament entry goes into the year end tournament. The MSC is open to any player, male or female. The year end tournament requires a membership and at least 2 bowled tournaments in the 2006-2007 season. The MSC is sanctioned by the USBC. Roger started with a 268 and never looked back, as he won this event for his second MSC title. He is now two for two in title games. After his 268 start, he added a 258 and a 300 for an 824. His total scratch pin fall of 1957 led all players in qualifying. He defeated Carlson in a close match for the championship. His previous title came at Midway Bowl last season. Finishing in second was Leif Carlson, who was also looking to win his second title. His title was won at Midway Bowl 2 seasons ago. A back row pin in the 10 th frame cost him the match. In the semi-final game, he defeated Neil Busch. Leif was the second high qualifier with 2172. In third place, was Neil Busch ( to whom I owe an apology, for some unexplained reason, when I submitted the final results to Tom Havlish and the Metro, I put Randy as his first name). Neil, I promise not to make that mistake again. Neil had a great tournament. He was third high qualifier, with 2098. During qualifying, he shot a 300 in the fifth game. To get to the semi-final game, he defeated last years player of the year, Clark Poelzer, 247 to 233. This was Neil s high finish to date. In fourth place, was Clark Poelzer. Clark is looking to win title #10. Clark, who is the current leader in all the statistical categories that the MSC monitors, had another good event. Seemingly, he always has good tournaments. His last win was at Maplewood. Fifth place was Steve Jansson. Steve was looking to win title # 3. He had the 2 nd highest scratch total, and qualified in 4 th place. He just couldn t get anything going in the 1 st stepladder game. His last title was won at Sartell 2 seasons ago. The sixth player in the ladder was Carl Hendrickson. Carl finished in 7 th because he was the high seeded super senior and didn t win the first game. Like Steve, he too, was unable to get anything going. Carl is looking to win his 1 st title. Carl has several runner-ups to his credit. Finishing in sixth was Lance Oelrich, Sr. Lance qualified in sixth place. This was his high finish to date. Look for this player to finish in the ladder again. Among his 1 st four games he had a 277 and a 278.
