Andrew Suarez, a second-round selection in the 2015 Draft, will make his third start for Salem-Keizer. The left-hander has pitched well but not very deep into his first two starts, failing to make it through the fourth inning in either start. The AquaSox will counter with Luiz Gohara, who will be making his eighth start for Everett. He has a 2-3 record and a 4.20 ERA on the season. REWIND: GOMEZ DELIVERS WALK-OFF WIN IN 10TH Miguel Gomez shot a game-winning single into left field as the Volcanoes walked off to defeat the Everett AquaSox 5-4 Wednesday night at Volcanoes Stadium. With Ronnie Jebavy at third and two outs in the 10th inning, Gomez laced a single off the left field wall to drive in Jebavy and send the Volcanoes faithful home happy. Caleb Smith (1-1, 2.13 ERA), who tossed two scoreless innings in relief for Salem-Keizer, picked up the win. Kyle Wilcox (1-1, 3.46 ERA) took the loss for Everett. WALK IT OFF IN EXTRAS The Volcanoes won in 10 innings last night for their first extra-innings win of the season. Salem-Keizer had previously lost both extra-innings contests this season before Miguel Gomez s walk-off single last night. The Volcanoes were one of only two teams in the Northwest League this season without an extra-innings victory - the other being the Vancouver Canadians. Coincidently, the Candians won in extras last night, as well. It was Salem-Keizer s first extra-innings win since August 31 of last season, when the Volcanoes defeated the Boise Hawks 4-3 in 10 innings. SELFISH POWER The Volcanoes lead the Northwest League with 29 home runs this season, but only nine of them have come with runners on base. Salem-Keizer has six two-run homers, three three-run homers and no grand slams on the year. Both the Everett AquaSox and Spokane Indians have more multi-run homers on the season (11) despite having less overall home runs this year (21 for Everett and 24 for Spokane). Additionally, the Volcanoes have only one more multi-run homer than Boise Hawks (22 overall), Hillsboro Hops (20 overall) and Vancouver Canadians (16 overall) do, as all of those clubs have eight. COMEBACK KIDS The Volcanoes completed their largest comeback of the season last night, climbing back from a four-run deficit to defeat the AquaSox in 10 innings. It was Salem-Keizer s longest comeback since August 12, 2014, when the Volcanoes fell behind by seven runs to Hillsboro in the second inning but fought back to win 14-11. The Volcanoes have struggled overall this season when falling behind, posting just a 5-14 record when the opponent scores first. BRAZILIAN BALLERS Everett starter Luiz Gohara represents a rarity in professional baseball. Although hundreds of professional baseball players hail from Latin American countries such as Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, very few come from Brazil. Currently there are only three Brazilians playing in Major League Baseball - Yan Gomes, Paulo Orlando and Andre Rienzo. Gohara is the only Brazilian national currently in the Northwest League. LAVA BURSTS: NOTES IN BRIEF AquaSox in Keizer: In the past two seasons, the Volcanoes are 9-2 vs. Everett at Volcanoes Stadium, largely thanks to a five-game sweep in 2013. Red Hot Offenses: The Volcanoes and AquaSox represent the league s top two offenses in batting average and hits. Everett has scored more runs than any other club, while Salem-Keizer leads the league in slugging and HRs.
