PREsIDENT s PODIUM Joe Kirik (248) 872 3220 president@eaa113.org October 2018 Online registration smooths out Young Eagles volunteering The new Young Eagles online registration process took all the drama out of staffing our September 22nd Young Eagles event! More than three dozen pilots and ground crew signed up in advance, letting Debbie Forsman know she d have enough volunteers to staff a bigger crowd. As you ll recall, last year marked a transition from school groups to the general public, so we need to be ready to accommodate more people. With the great volunteer support, we had no trouble giving airplane and helicopter rides to 42 young people. This leaves no doubt that we have enough dedicated volunteers to support larger, open YE events. Big thanks to all who helped make it possible. We ll do it again on October 20th to wrap up our 2018 young Eagles season. You can sign up at www.youngeaglesday.com Fall Flying Fall Flying is some of the best of the year with brilliant colors already emerging. Everybody has their favorite areas and events, and one of the best is the annual Chili & Franks Fly In/Cruise at HAAR airport (9OH1) where they cook chili in a big iron kettle over an open fire. It s put on by Toledo Chapter 582 and hosted by the Portage Flying club. Haar is grass strip in Elmore, OH, just east of Toledo. The date is Sunday, October 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thinking about building an RV? We recently received the donation of an RV 6 tail kit. According to the Van s Aircraft website, the RV 6 is no longer in production, but this could be a good practice start for someone who wants to get a feel for riveted aluminum construction. Let us know if you re interested. Chapter Meetings We had a great turnout for our September Chapter meeting to hear Capt. Hunter Harris share his airship flying adventures. I counted about 55 occupied seats, nearly a full house. It was a fascinating evening. September was an amazing milestone flying month for me. Dave Buck let me tag along with him on trip to Talkeetna, Alaska for some float and bush flying. Dave focused on float flying while I got a taste of the full spectrum of backcountry flying, including river sandbars, tundra, narrow gravel strips, river canyons, mountain flying near Mount Denali and this is crazy! landing on the state highway twice! I got a taste of float flying as well. Dave and I are putting a presentation together for the October meeting. We hope you ll enjoy it. No details yet on the October EAA video due to the early deadline for this month s newsletter. See you on October 18th. Happy fall flying! Joe Kirik

MIDWEsT ANTIQuE AIRCRAFT AssOCIATION FLY-IN - BRODHEAD, WI - september 8, 2018 By Randy Hebron After my brother Terry and I spent two days at his house loading the Volmer project on the trailer and inside the van, we were ready for a little fun. So we flew Terry s Cessna 182 up to the MAAA fly in at Brodhead, Wisconsin. The following are just a few of the pristine antiques that were there. A Funk that wasn t yellow! Aeronica C3
