MMA242 P2 Oct2014 Editorial There are now only eleven weeks to Christmas difficult to accept, given the pleasant weather we are having at present. For MMAC members, however, before Christmas comes upon us there are several important fixtures to be supported. Even if you are not participating, spectators are always welcomed by the athletes. The cross country relays, at Derby, and the British and Irish cross-country International at Nottingham, in particular, are worthy of our support. Congratulations to Irie Hill (W45) on being awarded the European Best Female Masters Athlete of the Year. A welldeserved accolade! See Below :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: EUROPEAN BEST FEMALE MASTERS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Irie Hill (W45) has been chosen as the European Best Female Masters Athlete of The Year. She broke her own W45 World Pole Vault record six times during the year, clearing 3.55m at the World Masters Indoor Championships in Budapest in March and winning the European Masters title in Izmir, Turkey, in August with a 3.30m vault. MANY CONGRATULATIONS!!! The invincible German, Guido Muller, who won the European 400m. in 63.45 sec. at age 75 and the 300m Hurdles in 49.93 sec, is Best Male Athlete Thanks to Bridget Cushen for this information ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Preliminary announcement There has been a request for MMAC members to consider offering accommodation to AMERICAN master athletes for the Multi-Events meeting in 2016. If you would like to offer accommodation, please contact Tom Morris mmac.sec@blueyonder.co.uk who will forward your offer to Bruce Charles. MMA242 P3 Secretary's Spot Oct2014 2015 Subscriptions Amazingly, the time has arrived when I have to remind you all that you can pay your 2015 subscriptions now. AREG has been set to receive payments for 2015 and all members with internet access can login at http://areg247.co.uk click on Area Club Membership and make your appropriate payment. Please remember that if you do not renew by the 31 st December, you will not be able to enter competitions until you have paid. For those of you who normally enter our Cross Country Championships in January please make sure you are paid up, DON T leave it until the closing date of the competition as some of you did in 2014! There were 526 members who paid online in 2014 making my life much easier, less visits to the Bank and less paperwork. Let s keep this up and improve on that figure. If you have forgotten your password then please let me know and I can re-set your account, this is easier than following the online system for forgotten passwords. For those of you who paid by cheque in 2014, please consider paying online, I can help you through this if you are unsure. Members without internet access can send me a cheque as normal with any changes in member details and don t forget this applies to MMAC competition entries that are also on AREG. Members of multiple Area Masters Clubs whose primary club is NOT Midland Masters will be sent an invoice so that they can pay for 2015, this is because they can pay online only to their primary club (applies only to Clubs using AREG). Membership subscriptions for 2015 remain at 17.00 with a reduction of 2.00 if opting out of receiving a postal Newsletter. England Athletics Registration Fee This has increased to 12.00 for the period 1st April 2015 to 31st March 2016. For our 1st Claim Members, this is payable with the 2015 subscriptions. Full details are on our website at http://midlandmasters.com Members Interests I mentioned this in the last Newsletter but there is still a long way to go. When you pay your subs online, please take time to click on Member Details and amend your profile by ticking the appropriate Interests. Membership Numbers These may sometimes be referred to as Area Club Number and because I have eliminated the possibility that a male and female member will have the same number I have started each number either with a 9 (female) or an 8 (male) and they are ALL 5 digits. Original numbers allocated have NOT been changed; the difference is the prefix 8 or 9 followed by the appropriate leading zeroes e.g. 90001. Note that for some overseas entries you may have to drop the 8 or 9. Incorrect numbers are still (after 3 years!) being quoted on competition entries with the exception of entries on AREG. This is time consuming for me to correct. REMEMBER that membership numbers can be checked on your personal profile on AREG 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are also published for paid up members on our website. Check out the Membership page. Half Marathon & Marathon Road Championships 2014-2015 Details of a new competition appear elsewhere in the Newsletter. Please remember that you can submit times for both events that you have competed in from the 1st April 2014 to date. Future Fixtures At the time of writing details of our Relays & AGM 2015 are almost finalised. There will be a change in venue but the course will take in most of last year s route. The date is set for the 26th April 2015 and unfortunately clashes again with the London Marathon. This was unavoidable because at several venues we looked at, our preferred dates (without major fixture clashes) were all fully booked. This illustrates how for in the future we have to organise these events. We are still awaiting confirmation of our Cross Country Championships but the date set is the 18th January 2015. The Colin Simpson Memorial Handicap will take place on the 1st February 2015 and entries are already open on AREG. Keep checking our website for the latest news on all our fixtures. The site is regularly updated. If you previously paid by Standing Order but have NOT received this email, please check your Junk/Spam Email Folder and allow MembeRise emails. Using AREG and paying early will greatly help me long term. MMA 242 P8 READERS WRITE Brian Ashwell (80329) writes Owing to the planta facitis heel injury which had been on going since Christmas, and worsened in May, so much I could hardly walk on it, I got to a good level when I ran 400m in 82 sec. quite easily, 1 mile in 6.49. I then increased my workload looking to be the oldest member to run a sub 6 min mile. When I got down to 6.21 I stopped running as my heel needed treatment. After 2 months I took a big risk and tried a 2 mile time trial to see if my foot would take it, aiming for an easy 16 mins. I threw caution to the wind and ran 13.30, first mile easy 7.17 then went for it and clocked 6.13 for the 2 nd mile. My targets this year were: sub 75sec. 400m; sub 6 min mile and sub 21min 5K. I was right on course until my injury. Mick Smedley was a big help, he told me how to get over my injury and said I would be running again before September. He was right but I need more time to be 100% over it. See how things go in the future, I now know I can go faster than the w.r for the age mile record of 6.26.6. It s just a matter of getting the fitness back and my training back on tra Steve Bazell (83534) writes. On the 19th October I shall be running the BUPA Great Birmingham Half Marathon and attempting to break the current Guinness World Record for the FASTEST HALF MARATHON IN A NURSE S UNIFORM (MALE) to help raise vital funds for the British Heart Foundation.. My challenge is nothing compared to what my baby son has been through in the first year of his life. Born with a complex congenital heart condition, he has undergone two open heart operations and one key-hole heart operation at Birmingham Children s Hospital and will need another open heart operation in a few years time. People can sponsor me and read more about my story at: https://www.justgiving.com/stevenbazell/ PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN Dave Phillips Writes... Many thanks for the great post London marathon coverage and as requested I can now tell you how I did despite my leg, hand and eye problems. Your coverage brought in a lot of money so many thanks from the Brain and Spins Foundation Charity and me. I got round on memory for my 436 th marathon in 5hrs 36 mins (a far cry from the 3.20 days of yesteryear) but really pleased to be back on the circuit after c5 months of relative inactivity. However the highlight was that my target of raising 5k was beaten and Team Phillips raised 8k so my total is now 78k raised at London marathons since 1988 when I raised 1k for the Coventry Sports Centre for the Disabled and in 1989 3k for The Snowball Charity for Children in Coventry. Photos were taken at the Post Marathon celebration at the Thistle Hotel Trafalgar Square and the team photo appeared in the Daily Telegraph sports section. Next to Tom is another Team Phillips member Dave Goodwin also of Massey Ferguson Runners Coventry (the other 2 lady members of my little team of 4 couldn t be there). So now the Brain and Spine and Daily Telegraph have again raised the bar to 100k for the charity and 500 marathons over the next 5 years so job almost done I guess. Regards, Dave Phillips Massey Runners and Pembrokeshire Harriers. Dave hands over the cheque for 8k to Tom Croft (Leicester and England rugby) the charity s joint honorary captain

MMA242 P10 MMAC Half Marathon & Marathon Championships It has been decided to re-introduce the Half Marathon and Marathon Championships into our events diary. These events were dropped some years ago because of lack of entrants and the effort to put them on and organise results; medals etc outweighed the interest. We now intend to re-introduce them but in a different format. Both competitions will be run simultaneously from the 1st April to the 31st March the following year and will be a virtual contest based on age graded results, with the top three positions getting Gold; Silver and Bronze medals. In addition the combined best average percentage for both Half and Full Marathon will be awarded a special trophy. These will be presented at our AGM. The first year from the 1st April 2014 to the 31st March 2015 will be largely experimental to gauge interest and to see how best to organise it. Inevitably there may have to be a few tweaks along the way. Please bear with us on this. Because this is a virtual competition we can start it immediately with any results going back to the 1st April 2014 and it is intended to publish the interim tables both on our website and in the Newsletter. The criteria/rules of the competition are as follows: 1 The competition will run for a 12 month period, normally from the 1 st April until the 31st March the following year 2 Results will be calculated using the WMA Age Grading Calculator 2006 (updated 2010) that appears on the Howard Grubb website at -http://www.howardgrubb.co.uk/athletics/wmalookup06.html 3 Medals will be presented at our AGM to the members scoring the highest three percentages and an overall trophy to the best combined Half Marathon & Marathon average percentage. 4 The qualifying performance percentage for awards to be presented is 65%+ 5 Any number of results can be submitted during the designated period provided that at the time of the race the member is fully paid up. 6 Submissions should be by email only or the online form on the MMAC website (see below) stating the member s date of birth; membership number; full name; date and name of event together with the time recorded. These must be accompanied by an hyperlink to the official results 7 Races must be over a certified course with a UKA issued Licence or under appropriate Rules for any overseas events. 8 Where possible gun to chip times will be counted when published otherwise chip to chip times. Either way the same criteria will be used for any one event to maintain consistency within that event 9 We do reserve the right to reject submissions that do not conform to the above criteria MMAC Annual Open Relays 2015 I am pleased to announce that our traditional Annual Open Relays will take place on the 26th April 2015 from the YHA National Forest Centre, Swadlincote. Full details can be found on this website on the dedicated page at http://wp.me/pdltv-fc and entry online will follow very soon. For those of you on the ball with diary dates you will spot that the date does clash again with the London Marathon. We tried with all our might to avoid this date but because of other fixture clashes with the MCAA Relays and other Masters events your organising team are involved in, coupled with the potential venues being booked up and unavailable, we had to settle on the 26th April or nothing!!! Hopefully this will not affect us too much. This event is for all affiliated runners (non-affiliated runners not allowed I m afraid) and is open to nonmmac members. Please disseminate among your fellow club colleagues and encourage a team entry. For individuals who cannot raise a team don t worry please enter as an individual and you will be placed in a Composite Team on the day. There is a possibility that a Race Walk Handicap will also take place at the same time, providing there are no major fixture clashes. Details will be published as soon as possible.
