The Promoter s Notes Twenty Four Hour Fellowship Founded 1960 - President Jim Hopper The 24 Hour Fellowship was founded in 1960 to promote the cycle sport of 24 hour time trials, and is open to anyone with an interest in riding or helping in these events. The Fellowship operates two long distance time trialling competitions. These are for anyone who completes one 100 mile, 12 hour and a 24 hour C.T.T. recognised event. There is one based purely on average speed and the other is for Veteran s and uses the V.T.T.A. standards to calculate the best plus mph for the three distances. The Fellowship also produces a journal twice a year containing articles, competitions, photographs, race reports and many other items of interest to long-distance cyclists. The annual subscription rates are: Individual 10-00 Family 12-00 Subs can also be commuted for up to 5 years. Secretary: John Hassall, 23 Hadrian Avenue, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, LU5 4SW Telephone 01582 690641 Treasurer: Bob Richards, 9 Loughborough Road, St Budeaux, Plymouth PL5 1NS Telephone 01752 215762 The web site is: www.24hourfellowship.org.uk Having patiently sorted through all the dozens of check sheets that were handed to him at the finish and collated the information to achieve a result, we have much to thank Mick Kilby for. He worked hard to help make the 2014 National 24 Hour a success, collecting a team of timekeepers, making sure their stations were marked clearly, taking times during the event and finally producing a distance for all the finishers. He was helped in the task of recording times by the course controllers Jim Ithill (24 Hour Fellowship President) and Paul Mepham of the Kent based VC Elan club. The timekeepers were Jane & Graham Lade, Richard Blackmore & Roy Canning, Les Hayman & David Watson, Mike Irons & Tony Palmer, Frank Cubis & Mike Labram and Su Balcombe & Richard Meed. (L-R) Paul Mepham Jim Ithell, Mick Kilby and Keith Hyatt at Halland RAB Sunday morning Marshals were mostly home produced from member clubs of ESCA but I am very grateful to Keith Hyatt (Catford CC, now based in Wales) and also from the Catford club - Stan Killick and Peter Hayes. Jim Turner and the Williams family, who are the face of 24 Hour time trials having organised the Mersey event for many years, travelled from Cheshire, and TA stalwart Fergus Muir came down from Norfolk. He, Keith and the Williamses were seen around the course in a number of places marshalling and spectating. Peter Hawker, New Forest CC, was I think, the first person to volunteer, and came from Winchester to help. He was closely followed by Rod & Jo Starmer who offered to marshal at Cooksbridge on Saturday afternoon. Lewes Wanderers provided many marshals, certainly the youngest, Nettie Glandfield, who insisted on coming out during the night on Pevensey marsh. Horry & Val Hemsley were there on both days of the event as was Clive Orchard. Tony Gale, Alan Lloyd, Keith Walker, John Armstrong, Ann Baker (winner of a short story competition to find the Winnie the Pooh laureate a few months ago) and Tom Glandfield made up 10 11

the complement. Adrian Hills took his motor home to the Pevensey by-pass and provided a restful environment for the trike riders and anyone else who needed comforting during the night. Phil Jurczyk and Georgie Berwick made use of Adrian s workshop when their tandem developed trouble on the night circuit. We were privileged that Georgie was able to finish his 54th 24 Hour event in East Sussex and has since completed the Mersey. (L-R) Phil Jurczyk, Esther and Georgie Berwick before the event started Eastbourne Rovers were also in evidence throughout. With Graham & Jane were their family. Their youngest grandson Max, aged 5, is now considered old enough to be timekeeper trained and was holding his watch as riders came round the finishing circuit. Peter Moon, Ken Beckett, Stu Greenway, Don Rawbin, Dave Dunbar and Les Springett all stayed for several hours, as did Dave Cox after finishing car park duties. Debbie Gearing saw riders on the A22, realised something was going on, went home to fetch a chair and stayed out for the night at Cophall. Stan Kennet represented GS Stella at Pevensy rab. Sue Cox was in charge of the catering on Sunday helped by her friends and Ann Burden of the San Fairy Ann CC. It was great to see Harry & Lilian Featherstone out as they have both been ill during the past year. I m always dubious about phoning my sick friends as I assume they will think I want them to get better so that I can pressgang them into a job and I m very pleased when I see them out and about. Ann Human brought out a massive TV screen for showing the results and intermediate times. She s also been a conduit between Mick Kilby and myself & Tim in transmitting the results as they appear. The East Surrey RC/40+ provided Keith Wilkinson, Martin Aldridge and Derek Hanson on Saturday afternoon and the Tooting were represented by John Cole on Sunday morning. Bob Coleman (Epsom CC) was one who never received his instructions or start sheet but nonetheless turned up at Pevensey r.a.b. to help. Ken Phillips not only took over all the course measuring after Charles Robson s death but also turned up to marshal. Colin Vicary from Tenn Outdoors clothing supplier spent several hours watching the sun gradually supplant the moon on the night circuit. Hastings riders Stuart Crabb and Chris Parker joined the night team and Chris s other half, Pippa, came out in the morning to take him up to Little Horsted for another shift, passing Tim & Romana Miles at Golden Cross on their way. When Gordon Davis had to take Trevor Hall to A&E at Hastings with a broken collarbone Jim Hollands and Dace took over his check at Little Horsted. Their Rye Wheelers clubmate, Julie Bryant, was at Golden Cross for the finishing circuit. Brighton Excelsior s Bob Harber, who was down to ride but DNS due to an extra work load and lack of miles, volunteered his services at Kennel Corner on Sunday morning. The previous afternoon Rick & Val Stringer had marshalled at Little Horsted, fitting this in between welcoming guests to Saxon Cottage, their local N.T. property, on Saturday and organising the Steyning in Bloom Garden Tour on Sunday afternoon. Bob Burden & Aly Nye, members of Tri Spirit, spent most of the weekend on various round-a-bouts and the other member of the trio, Gary Booth, signed everybody on, retrieved their numbers and removed safety pins at the end.. The local East Sussex CTC Section was also much in evidence over the weekend. Neil Dickinson, Mick Hills and Pete Burberry, Geoff & Jenny Boxall, Chris Colyer, Norman Wright, John Beaumont and Sussex Nomads stalwarts Alan Limbrey and Graham Seymour, who attend CTC rides on Wednesday, all gave their services in numerous places. You may have noticed the signs and arrows around the course. These were produced by my son Tim and placed in position by Robin Johnson & Dave Dallimore. There is a very good photo on one of the websites of Dave sleeping peacefully at the feet of Steve Dennis, who marshalled on both days at North Chailey. And Saturday was his birthday. Mike Anton pushed off all the riders and has taken photos of almost Steve Dennis and Dave Dallimore at North Chailey Sunday morning everyone who was out at the weekend including himself. There is a link to his gallery on the esca24hour website. My favourite is the one of the Bakers at Barcombe. If you 12 13

contact Mike it s possible to purchase prints. I ve mentioned Tim but forgotten the rest of my long-suffering family. My son Barney and grandson James were out all day and night recording riders on the circuits and Maurice marshalled and held riders bikes at the self help feed stations. Barney bought me four rescued chicken for my birthday the following week is he telling me something I ask myself, like get a different hobby mum. Taylor spent most of the night before the race in A & E with her husband Steve as a result of a dodgy meal he ate. Jill Wilkinson, still weak from an earlier spell in hospital, sadly gave it best before the end of the event. Both girls looked so good and stylish on Saturday. It was great to see Andy Wilkinson round the course and of course we were all delighted that one time ESCA champion Marina Bloom rode this time and congratulate her on her silver medal. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported the event and especially Sarah Lade and Graeme Lake, who work for East Sussex County Council, for promising to keep the course clear of major road works for the weekend. They kept their promise and we only had two sets of minor emergency water works on the course. Esther DONATIONS We are very grateful to the following whose support made the event possible: Roy Dunster (L-R) Keith Lawton, Sheila Hardy, Dave Berry, Esther & Angela Lawton Mike & Jean Hayler Brian James Being a championship we had some illustrious visitors and CTT Chairman Sheila Hardy, Dave Barry and Keith & Angela Lawton were waiting at Berwick village hall on Friday night when I turned up to collect the keys. Sheila is a wonderful Chairman and enters into everything with gusto. 14 Don Lock Frank Minto We had two masseuse (Jules) in the night HQ and (Jackie Macnay) on Sunday There were some sadnesses in this event. Most of all we missed Mike & Jean Hayler. Mike has had problems with his knees for some time and was having intensive physiotherapy in a convalescent home after a long spell in hospital. An accident at Little Horsted on Saturday disrupted things a little but fortunately no-one seemed to be hurt and no cyclists were involved. As well as Trevor, Ben Fielden also fell. Both were dazzled by headlights during the night and Ben too finished up in hospital.
