Southern Arkansas University 2012 Mulerider Football THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2012 HTTP://WWW.MULERIDERATHLETICS.COM #9 Henderson State University Reddies (8-0, 6-0 GAC) @ Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (6-1, 4-1 GAC) WHEN: OCTOBER 27, 2012 WHERE: MAGNOLIA, ARK. @ WILKINS STADIUM KICKOFF: 6:00 P.M. The Series (41-34-1, Henderson State) Saturday s game between Southern Arkansas and Henderson State is the 77th meeting of the two teams. The Reddies hold a 41-34-1 advantage in the series that dates back to 1915 when SAU was a third district high school and HSU was a Methodist college (Henderson-Brown). Henderson State won that first meeting 25-0, tossed another shutout, 63-0 in 1916, and won 62-6 in 1917. After not playing in 1918, the Muleriders won their first game of the series, 21-19, in 1919. SAU played HSU s junior varsity teams in 1924, 1925 and 1940, winning two of those. In the early years, the two teams did not meet for eight seasons prior to 1934. Southern Arkansas did not field teams from 1937-39 and 1942-45 and the teams also did not play in 1946. The only tie in the ancient series was in 1950, a scoreless deadlock in Magnolia. In 1951, the Muleriders won 35-14 on the way to the AIC championship and followed with a 21-13 victory in 1952 en route to another AIC title. The two teams also did not face each other from 1956-58, but have played every year since, excluding the 1993 season and last year. Ironically, Southern Arkansas has scored only 17 points in each of its last three meetings with the Reddies, falling 42-17 and 51-17 in 2008 and 2009 before suffering a 28-17 setback in 2010 in Magnolia, its fifth consecutive loss to HSU. Henderson State s longest win streak in the series is seven games from 1973-79 and SAU s longest string of wins is six (1996-2001). The largest margin of victory by Southern Arkansas was in 2000, an 86-27 win in Arkadelphia, while the Reddies most decisive win was the 63-0 shutout in Arkadelphia in 1916. Southern Arkansas holds a 19-14-1 advantage in the series in games played in Magnolia, including a 34-13 loss to HSU in 1991 that Henderson State had to forfeit, while the Reddies hold a 26-15 edge in Arkadelphia and 1-0 at a neutral site of Hope in 1928. The Coaches Hired as the 19th head coach at Southern Arkansas in December 2008, Bill Keopple (Central Arkansas, 1982) is in his fourth season with the Muleriders, where he is now 13-24 overall. He previously had spent six years as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, compiling a 44-26-1 record, five consecutive state playoff appearances, two 6A South Conference titles, and 6A state championships in 2006 and 2007. In 1996 he served as athletic director and head coach at Newport High School, guiding the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years at the high school level. Keopple has 18 years of experience as an assistant in the collegiate ranks. He spent the 2002 season on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burn s staff at Tulsa, coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator. He served two years under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. Keopple was an honorable mention All-District and All-AIC selection for Central Arkansas and got his start there as a graduate assistant in 1982. He spent 14 years with the Bears coaching the offensive line and was offensive coordinator from 1990-95. Henderson State coach Scott Maxfield (Louisiana Tech, 1984) is in his eighth season with the Reddies and has compiled a 47-34 mark during his tenure. His 2010 squad grabbed a share of the Gulf South Conference championship, and last year s team finished second in the inaugural season of the Great American Conference. Maxfield came to Henderson State from Blinn (Texas) College. He was head coach at Blinn for three years (2002-04) after serving as head coach at Pearl River (Miss.) College in 2001. His two-year college overall record is 27-12. Maxfield got his coaching start as a student assistant at his alma mater, Louisiana Tech, in 1983, before serving as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss from 1984-85. He was then offensive line coach at Northwest Mississippi College from 1986-90, and defensive line coach, and eventually defensive coordinator, at Northwestern State (La.) from 1991-95. Maxfield left Northwestern to return to Northwest Mississippi, where he served as offensive coordinator from 1996-2000, before taking the Pearl River position. VS. Mulerider Football History Southern Arkansas has had a football program since 1911, but will have to wait until the 2017 season to truly commemorate 100 years of Mulerider football. SAU didn t field a team from 1937-1939 and 1942-1945, a total of seven years, making 2012 the 95th football season. SAU was founded in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School, with G.R. Turrentine serving as the inaugural head coach in 1911. The team played only two games that first year, losing both in Magnolia by shutouts, 19-0 to Texarkana (Texas) High School and 9-0 to Camden High School. The team was commonly called the Magnolia Aggies until the early 1920 s, but Turrentine, who went on to coach for a total of seven years, is credited with providing the moniker of Muleriders following the team s final game of the 1912 season, a Thanksgiving date at Fordyce High School. A few days after that game, members of the team rode mules to Coach Turrentine s home to discuss their final game and he greeted them with My Mule Riders. That was the first known time the term was used, and the name eventually stuck, changing from two words to the compound Muleriders. SAU is now 435-414-30 in its 95th year of football since the first season of play in 1911, and is currently 7-5 all-time in Great American Conference games and 201-198-11 against teams currently in the GAC. Bill Keopple enters his fourth season as head football coach at Southern Arkansas, hired in December 2008 as the 19th coach to lead the Muleriders. Keopple has accumulated 28 years of coaching experience, including his first stint as a head coach on the collegiate level at SAU. He served 18 years as an assistant in the college ranks with stops at Tulsa, Arkansas, Boise State and Central Arkansas. Prior to coming to Southern Arkansas, Keopple served six years (2003-2008) as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana. His teams were 44-26-1 during his six seasons, advancing to the state playoffs the last five and winning consecutive state championships in 2006 and 2007. Keopple s 2005 and 2006 Razorback teams were 6A South Conference champions. He was honored in 2006 as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year, as well as 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Foundation in both 2006 and 2007, and was selected to serve on the Arkansas high school football All- Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007. Before taking over the reins at Texarkana, Keopple was at the University of Tulsa in 2002 on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burns staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator for the Golden Hurricane. Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions, finishing 9-3 and playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Arkansas had the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the nation that season and was ranked seventh in total defense. The 1999 Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in total defense. Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High School where he was head coach and athletic director in 1996. He guided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years as a head coach on the high school level. Record Watch 1 Southern Arkansas junior starting quarterback Tyler Sykora has continued his assault on the Mulerider record book all year, setting four career school marks and tying one each of his own season and single-game records thus far. His four touchdown passes last week against Southern Nazarene lifted him to 19 on the year, matching his own record from last season, and he should better that as soon as Saturday. Sykora should be able to garner at least one more career record this season, as he currently has 4,774 yards of total offense and needs 569 yards to tie former quarterback Ted Williams 5,343 set from 2000-2003; and should break three more of his own season records from a year ago, needing 64 pass attempts, 38 completions and 345 yards to better last year s 294 attempts, 178 completions and 2,254 yards. The southpaw currently owns 11 school records, including four career and season marks, and three single-game records. Record Watch 2 Mulerider junior running back Mark Johnson s one touchdown last week against Southern Nazarene enabled him to tie the career rushing touchdown record of 27 set by Torrence Jones (2001-2004). His 507 career rushing attempts are just 90 shy of Gerald Pride s 597 (1979-1982). Facts on SAU Location... Magnolia, Arkansas Conference... Great American Affiliation... SAU held a 17-13 lead after three quarters of play in that contest, before the Blazers came roaring back with four unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter and a 41-17 win. * Southern Arkansas 6-1 mark on the season is its best since the 1999 team held the same record. This year s team is gaining some national recognition, having received votes in the past three AFCA polls, including 14 this week that would have them ranked 32nd if the poll extended past 25 teams. Prior to this year, the last time the Muleriders were ranked or received votes in the official AFCA poll was in 2004. The Reddies, ranked ninth this week in the AFCA poll and 14th in D2Football.com, also appeared in the first edition of the NCAA Division II region polls released this week, coming in at second in Super Region Three. * SAU will be trying to snap a five-game losing streak to Henderson State this week that dates back to 2006, with three of those losses coming in Magnolia. Prior to 2006, Southern Arkansas had won three consecutive and nine of the 10 previous meetings between the two teams. * Mulerider fans will recognize two familiar faces on the Reddie coaching staff in defensive coordinator Carey Baker and linebackers coach Jason Smelser. Baker, in his third season at HSU, began his coaching career at SAU in 1993 as a graduate assistant and then served five years as defensive coordinator from 2000-2004.
