GPO Box 1654 Sydney NSW 2001 Tel/Fax: 02 9681 7884 The NSWFA Selection Commission has reviewed the ranking process, which determines selection for NSW teams, and the following system will apply from 1 st January 2019: 1. NSW State s will be divided into the following age categories: U8 / U10 / U12 / U14 / U15 / / U20 / U23 / Open / Veteran (+40 to +70). 2. Age categories are determined by the fencer s age as of the 1 st January for each year (YoB). 3. State points will be based on results from the following organisations: NSWFA, AFF, CFF, OFC, SEAPFF, AFC, EFC, FIE, Olympics, Universiade. 4. The Minime Circuit events (U8 to U14) will include events held in: NSW, VIC, SA, Asian Zone and European Zone. 5. During the AFT/AFS tour, any competitions which are held by a foreign national organisation will also be included in the State s with the allocation of points to be determined by the Selection Commission after consulting the Tour Coach. 6. Any other event which is not covered in items 3 to 5 can be presented for consideration to the Selection Commission for possible inclusion in the rankings. Requests for inclusion must be made at least 4 months prior to the event. The Selection Commission will consider if the allocation of points is warranted for this type of event after consultation with the Head Coach. 7. Club GP points will be based only on results from designated Club GP events as indicated in the yearly calendar. Only registered NSW clubs will be included in the Club GP s. GP s will be listed under the following categories: Youth, Open, Veteran and Overall. 8. State s will be calculated as follows: Opens and Veterans = Best of 4 + State U8 / U10 / U12 / U14 / U15 / / U20 / U23 = Best of 3 + State. Note: Additional bonus points will count towards a fencer s ranking for competing in the State Championships in each category. This bonus point is for state championships only and cannot be substituted for another event. 9. State s will be calculated on a rolling 12 month basis. This means a fencer s current ranking will be based on the results achieved within the previous 12 month period. 10. Club GP s will be calculated with all points reset to 0 at the beginning of each season. Page 2 of 17

GPO Box 1654 Sydney NSW 2001 Tel/Fax: 02 9681 7884 11. At the start of each season, any fencer who has matured out of their current age category will have their name and past points removed. They will advance to the next age category, taking with them only competition results which are valid for the new age category. 12. For international events, points will be awarded to fencers only if they advance from the pools and fence in a DE round. 13. Regional competition results receive a 0.7 multiplier to allocated State points. 14. State and Club GP points will be awarded in accordance with the NSWFA calculation tables as listed on pages 7 to 17. 15. The minimum age that a child is permitted to receive State and Club GP points is 6 years of age. 16. Only fencers who are registered under NSWFA will be included in the State s (ACT fencers are exempt from this rule). 17. ACT fencers will be included in the State s only for competitions held within the jurisdiction of NSWFA. National and international results will not be counted. 18. Interstate and International fencers who wish to be included in the State and Club GP s must be a Senior or Junior Affiliated fencer registered with NSWFA. - It is the expectation of NSWFA that these fencers will represent NSW at the national level during AFC events, to help contribute points to the overall cup (e.g. Cyclone Cup). If they choose to represent another state or country in AFC events then they will not receive any State points for those events. - They must represent a registered NSW Club when entering a state competition in order to gain Club GP points. 19. A NSWFA registered fencer will be required to represent the club they initially registered with for the duration of that season. If a fencer changes clubs during the season, they will continue to be listed in the State and Club GP rankings as representing the club they initially registered with at the start of the season. 20. Veteran fencers will be listed together under a single combined State from +40 to +70. 21. Given that +50 and above veterans are the only fencers eligible for Veteran World Championships, as an alternative for +40 veteran fencers, they may compete in the Asian Veteran Championships which will have the equivalent State points as the World Veteran Championships. This alternative event is still open to all veterans to compete in but only +40 Veterans will receive State points. Note: This rule is valid only if the Asian Veterans is run as a separate event, not a combined single event as done in previous years with an AFC competition. Page 3 of 17

GPO Box 1654 Sydney NSW 2001 Tel/Fax: 02 9681 7884 22. Mixed Gender Events For a mixed gender event to proceed, all fencers must agree to participate otherwise it cannot proceed. No fencer can be required to fence in a mixed gender event against their wishes. Standard practice will have the poules round fenced as mixed. For direct elimination rounds, the normal practice will be for members of the minority gender (usually women) to fence the DE rounds separately from the majority gender (usually men). Results will be recorded, rankings points given, and medals awarded on the basis that there are two separate events. A full set of medals will be awarded regardless of the number of participants. For example: If there are only two fencers in the women s event, a gold and silver will be awarded. If there is only one fencer in the women s event, then they will be awarded a gold medal. However, the female(s) may choose to fence the DE rounds with the males if they wish. In this case, results will be recorded, ranking points given, and medals awarded on the basis that it is a single event. The female(s) who chose to fence with the males in the DE rounds accepts that they will be treat equally with the men in terms of results, ranking points and medals. Also, any woman who choses not to follow other females into the mixed DE rounds will continue in a separate DE round solely for women and have their results recorded, ranking points given and medals awarded on the basis that it is a separate event from the men (this applies also if there is only a single female). These rules were set when women expressed concern about being required to fence with men. The practice for mixed gender event applies to all age categories. In the case of children under 16, parents must give their consent to their children participating in a mixed gender event. It is sufficient for this consent to be given verbally at the competition. 24. Mixed Age Minime Events During U14, U12, U10 and U8 events, points can only be awarded for a single age category. All fencers in a mixed age event will only receive ranking points in a single age category based on the age of the oldest fencer in the competition. No double dipping of results and ranking points is permitted across different age categories. In the instance where, say, there are only one or two fencers in an U14 event, they cannot be placed in the U12 event. It may be feasible, once the U12 event has finished, for U12 fencers to compete in the scheduled U14 event. 25. Current rankings will be published on the NSWFA website www.nswfa.org.au Page 4 of 17
