Mississippi Braves (6-11) vs Biloxi Shuckers (12-4) LHP Sean Newcomb (1-0, 2.40) vs LHP Josh Hader (0-0, 0.69) Overall (6-11) 1st Half (6-11) 2nd Half (0-0) Game #18 April 24, 2016 Pearl, MS Trustmark Park TODAY S GAME: After a heart-breaking loss on Saturday night, the M-Braves try to get back to winning baseball against the Shuckers in a Sunday afternoon matinee. Lefthander Sean Newcomb takes the hill against Shuckers left-hander and top prospect Josh Hader. LAST TIME OUT: Mississippi took a 1-0 lead into the ninth, but Mauricio Cabrera allowed an RBI triple to Javier Betancourt with one out, and a throwing error by Ozzie Albies brought in Betancourt for a little league home run and a 2-1 Biloxi lead. The win was stolen from the grasp of Chris Ellis, who allowed just one hit over six innings of shutout baseball. Carlos Franco drove in the lone run, an RBI single in the sixth. Jason Hursh hurled two shutout frames in relief. Johan Camargo, Dustin Peterson and Franco finished with two hits apiece. MAYHEM AMONG THE MAGNOLIAS: The Mississippi Braves and Biloxi Shuckers start the second season of their rivalry, after Biloxi took the 2015 head-to-head slate. The Braves were 11-12 against the Shuckers last season, but won 7 of 13 at Biloxi s MGM Park. The Shuckers rode a first-half South Division crown to the playoffs, where they lost the championship series in five games to the Chattanooga Lookouts. HOT OUT OF THE GATE: So far in 2016, the M-Braves are playing much better baseball when they score first. They are 6-4 when scoring first in a game, but 0-7 when the opponent scores first. THE SENSATIONAL CONTACT OF ASTUDILLO: M-Braves catcher Willians Astudillo has an incredible knack for making contact and putting the ball in play, currently riding a stretch of 41 games, 145 consecutive at-bats, and 156 consecutive plate appearances since his last strikeout. The last time Astudillo struck out was July 23, 2015 while playing for high-a Clearwater in the Phillies system. Astudillo also hasn t walked since 8/29/15, a span of 72 plate appearances. EXIT STAGE LEFT: Dustin Peterson and Levi Hyams each hit solo home runs on Tuesday night, the first duo to homer in the same Braves home game since July 31, 2014. That day, Rich Poythress and Cedric Hunter each hit homers against Mobile s Aaron Blair, who now pitches as a top prospect in the Braves organization at AAA Gwinnett (and threw seven no-hit innings on Tuesday night against Durham). STELLAR STARTERS: Through 16 games, Mississippi Braves starters just once have allowed more than two earned runs in a game (Rob Whalen, 3 ER, 4/20 vs CHA), posting a 5-3 record with a 2.14 ERA. They ve gone a combined 86 innings, allowing just 56 hits for 19 earned runs, striking out 93 and walking 42. THE SKIPPER, BRAVE AND SURE: For the first time since 2012, the Mississippi Braves have a new manager at the helm in former big league third baseman Luis Salazar. Salazar spent the past five seasons managing the Braves high-a Carolina League affiliate in Lynchburg (2011-2014) and Carolina (2015). It will be Salazar s 13th season as a minor league manager, posting a career record of 638-691 and a 340-355 record in the Braves organization. He played 13 seasons in the big leagues from 1980 to 1992, posting a.261 average and 94 home runs between the Padres, White Sox, Tigers and Cubs. Salazar returns to the Southern League after serving as hitting coach of the Jacksonville Suns (2008) and Chattanooga Lookouts (2009).
