The youngest head coach in the Big 12 Conference (35 years old), Capel is 86-56 in his fifth year at OU and 165-97 in his ninth year overall. Led the Sooners to a 30-6 record and an NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance in 2008-09. The team, which featured consensus national player of the year and No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin, peaked at No. 2 in the national polls for three weeks in February. Coached the Sooners to a 23-12 mark and to the NCAA Tournament second round in 2007-08. In 2003-04, coached VCU to a CAA Tournament championship game victory over George Mason, resulting in Rams first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996. VCU lost in the first round to Chris Paul s No. 4-seed Wake Forest squad, 79-78. His 2004-05 team, which finished 19-13, competed in the NIT, marking just the third time in program history that VCU made consecutive postseason appearances. Served as USA head coach of this summer s FIBA Americas U18 Championship team that went 5-0 and won the gold medal in San Antonio, Texas. Was also an assistant on the gold-medal-winning USA Men s World University Games Team that went 8-0 in Turkey in 2005.
