ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Safety Requirements regarding kayaking come under the guiding principle laid down in the BB Safety handbook, namely that the Captain has to be satisfied that the person in charge is "competent." The canoe club have given this some thought over the years and we recommend the following as a competent standard for taking young people out on canals etc.: that the minimum the person in charge should hold is the BCU 2 star, a first aid certificate and be trained in rescue techniques. (This is the equivalent to the old BCU level 1 coach / supervisor award and a follows similar pattern to that run by the Scouts, LEAs and AALA in house training).
