And he picked up right where he left off, scoring a game-high 24 points as Georgetown beat the Bearcats, 74-47, Improved to 20-9 overall and closed out the BIG EAST regular season with a 10-8 league mark that earned the team a first round bye in the conference tournament... A 9-2 spurt over the next 1;50 extended Georgetown s lead to 20- points, 59-39, on a Freeman layup with 8:10 to play... The biggest lead for Georgetown was 31 points, first on a layup from Clark with 3:28 to play (72-41) and then on a layup from junior forward Julian Vaughn with 2:35 to play (74-43). West Virginia 81, Georgetown 68 Sophomore center Greg Monroe scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds and junior guard Chris Wright scored 21 points and handed out seven assists as an under-manned Georgetown team lost to No. 10 West Virginia, 81-68, in front of 13,211 fans at WVU Coliseum Monday night Trailing 43-26 at the break, West Virginia out-scored the Hoyas 10-1 over the first 3:10 of the second half and extended their lead to 26 points, 53-27, on a jumper from Kevin Jones The Hoyas, however, responded with a 12-1 run over 2:10 and pulled to within 16 points, 54-38, on pair of baskets from freshman guard Vee Sanford, first a three-pointer and then a jumper, forcing WVU to call a timeout Wright started it with one of two free throws, Monroe scored on a dunk and Wright hit two more free throws before Sanford s jumpers The Mountaineers pushed the lead back to 18 points, 58-40, on a layup from Joe Mazzulla with 10:46 to play, but again the Blue & Gray fought back. Never can that be more evident than in the play of junior guard Chris Wright, junior forward Julian Vaughn, or in the case of the Georgetown bench... When the Hoyas beat Louisville on Feb. 23, a lot of people spoke about the points scored by Austin Freeman or the number of rebounds Greg Monroe grabbed. Wright scored only four points and had four assists, but he also played 38 minutes and consistently broke down the Louisville press, allowing the Hoyas to set up their offense... It was the sixth time this season that Wright had played at least 38 minutes (Georgetown is 5-1 when he does)... Vaughn s contributions, meanwhile, can get a bit lost in the shuffle... He may not score a ton of points, but he has done a lot of the grunt work in the post for Georgetown, which has allowed for more space for scoring and rebounding for Monroe, who ranks among the top-20 in the BIG EAST in both of those categories... The bench, a point of discussion throughout the season, has provided steady contributions as the season has gone on, sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle...
