RSA Sports Newsletter Issue 30 AUTUMN 2014 Welcome to the Autumn edition of the RSA Sports newsletter. Inside this issue we look at how the Academy have started in their early season fixtures as we aim to emulate the fantastic success of last year. Special points of interest: We also review the start to the new house sports season, another successful Sports Day and have updates from the Sports Leadership Academy. 180 Sports Leadership Students at RSA RSA win 7 0 and 8-1 in first rounds of national cup football First House Sports Results Shared between houses. Once again all participants wore house t- shirts. Bragg were victorious in both the boys and girls tug o war. PAGE 2 RSA SPORTS NEWSLETTER Rugby Results The rugby season kicked off in emphatic style as the new Year 10 team comprehensively beat Bishop Stopford 74-7. They also performed well in a narrow national cup defeat by one score to Stamford School. The Year 11s (sporting the new PRITON WINDOWS sponsored kit) beat Bishop Stopford 7-0 with the U18 slipping to a defeat by just one score. Football Results The U15 boys and U16 girls both began their campaigns with comfortable victories. The U15 boys won 5-2 at Countesthorpe whilst the girls (pictured) beat Avon Valley 8-1. The U18 boys comfortably saw off Kingswood 7-0 whilst the U18 girls slipped to two close defeats in both the national and county cup. All age groups have forthcoming league and cup fixtures in addition to the U16 girls futsal finals Hockey Results The U16 girls hockey team narrowly lost 2-1 against Bishop Stopford in their first fixture despite a goal from Hannah Cufflin. Table Tennis, Basketball, Trampolining and Badminton Fixtures will all take place next half term

ISSUE 30 PAGE 3 Netball Results The netball teams have begun in comprehensive fashion with all teams currently unbeaten following wins over South Wigston (U15 A+B, U16), Countesthorpe (U15 A+B, U16) and Bishop Stopford (U19) Cross Country Results Well done to the students who have represented RSA at the first two cross country races of the season. The major success came in the second race of the season at Rutland water when Isaac Akers won the intermediate boys race in his first outing for RSA this year and in the senior girls the dream team of Martha Clapp, Beth Ellis and Abby Coleman all finished in the top 6 places. Results from the relays and next races will be in the next issue. RSA Sports Teams We run a variety of teams in a number of sports including Football, Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Tennis, Table Tennis, Swimming, Volleyball, Indoor Rowing, Softball, Cricket, Badminton, Trampolining, Rounders and Athletics. For results updates please check the PE boards or website. All students are welcome to attend training sessions throughout the year and we are proud of the success we have achieved in recent years. We are always looking for sponsors to help with the purchase of new kit so if you are interested in supporting one of our teams please contact a member of the PE staff. Last year we were extremely grateful to Priton Windows, TOTUM management and Molly Maid for their support.

Well done to all students whom have taken part so far look out for the forthcoming fixtures (games every Wednesday and Friday. ISSUE 30 PAGE 5 SPORTS DAY Well done to all the competitors, leaders, and staff that made sports day a great success once again. Congratulations to all the individual and team winners but also to the students who really put themselves out to participate in a number of events. Well done to the captains for helping organise the teams and well done to Will Ashley who broke the academy record for the 80m hurdles (11.4 secs) and to Elise Tear who broke the academy record for the triple jump with a jump of 10.03m. Congratulations to Pickering who secured the sports day trophy and to Bragg for winning the Tug o war trophy. Victor Ludorum Will Ashley Victrix Ludorum Elise Tear Mini Olympics The annual Mini Olympics took place near the end of the summer term with over 400 Year 3 and 4 children from 14 primaries participating in over 10 activities led entirely by RSA sports leaders. Following a warm up dance and parade the children worked around a number of activities. Year 6 sports ambassadors were co-ordinated by RSA sports Ambassador Elli Randon and they supported RSA leaders on a number of activities. Well done to all students involved for assisting in this fantastic event. Events included TAG rugby, Sprints, Tennis, Handball, Uni Hoc, Skipping, Treasure Hunt., Throws, Kickball, Jumps and Parachutes.

PAGE 6 RSA SPORTS NEWSLETTER SPORTS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY Sports Leadership Awards 180 leaders training!!! The RSA Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership has started as part of the new Extension block with students leading sessions and developing their skills during their 3 sessions a week. The Level 2 award in sports leadership has begun in the Year 11 enrichment block and the Level 2 community award and Level 3 Higher certificate are being undertaken by sixth form students in 6 plus sessions. In total there are around 180 students participating on these accredited courses and many students are already leading at local schools and clubs Sports Ambassadors Young Ambassadors for Sport Elli Randon and Abi York will be working on ideas to develop PE and Sport this year. The annual conference with all the local primary school sports ambassadors takes place on October 10th. Rugby Ambassadors A group of students from all year groups will be working with our two main sports ambassadors and the RFU to look at ways of raising the profile of the Rugby World Cup in 2015. Events and activities will be held at RSA and locally to encourage participation. Primary School Netball Well done to Any Hayward, Lily Mills, Lilly Dodson, Hannah Wood, Rachel Barber and Emily Dilkes who officiated the recent primary school netball tournament organised and hosted by RSA. Church Langton ran out winners. If you would like to get involved in any sports leadership event please speak to your sports leadership teacher or Mr Scully. Please see the back page for event dates. More will be added throughout the year.

ISSUE 30 PAGE 7 SPORTS COUNCIL If you have any idea for any activity or event or would like to comment on any aspect of PE and sport at Robert Smyth please speak to a member of the sports council. The sports council meet weekly to discuss a variety of issues and to plan events. LSLSSP Award Winners RSA enjoyed a successful sports awards in July with a number of students and projects winning awards. Luke Mathers (KS5) and Iquan Silcott (JS4) won the sports leaders of the year awards meaning RSA has won both these awards each year for the last 6 years!! RSA also won the innovation award once again for their Mini Paralympics project and were rewarded for their work with Harborough District Council as they scooped the Community Partnership Award Cricket Leadership Well done to the leaders who took part in a recent cricket leadership course run by a coach from the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Board. Students were taught games and activities which they will now lead in primaries locally as part of an initiative to increase participation.
