From the Governor, Brothers and Co-Workers, 'Tis the season to be jolly? Not necessarily. For many people the holiday season, which kicks off with Thanksgiving and spans through New Year's, is anything but blissful. In fact, this time of year may trigger a bout of the blues or perhaps ignite a depression. So let s all be a little kinder to one another this Holiday Season. November was a very busy month. December will be just as crazy starting with the Moose Riders travelling over to the VA Hospital, Lodge Children s Christmas Party, Under Privilege Children s Christmas Party, Member s Christmas Party with the Bill Miles Band, and we finish out the month with the New Year s Eve Party with Wild Heart. Be sure to check out the calendar each day for all the events and functions going on. A quick note about the Lodge and Social Quarters, it will be closed on the 24 th, 25 th, 27 th, 29 th and 30 th. This will allow for our employees to spend time with their families during the Christmas Holiday. With this said, the Queen of Hearts will be drawn on Wednesday, December 26. We hosted our third Valued Veteran Dinner in November. Each veteran received their Moose International Certificate and Value Veteran pin. We also presented Carlos Williams with the Valued Veteran of the Year Certificate for the 2018-2019 year. Congratulations! In closing, several members have come up to me about events and functions that are going on in our lodge. This surprised me a little, because I make announcements several times a week (Queen of Hearts on Tuesday and again on Saturday Night before the calling Book). These events and functions are how some members find out what s happening around the lodge. We all should be mindful of these announcements and give the members an opportunity to hear them. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Fraternally yours, Robert Logan Governor SEE A VET - THANK A VET Never pass up a chance to thank a Veteran for his or her service. Let them know that we appreciate their sacrifice and dedicated service. Senior Regent: November flew by so quickly, it is hard to believe December is already upon us. Before we talk about how busy we will be spreading joy in December, I want to highlight all the great things that took place in November. First, we started our canned goods collection to help make Thanksgiving a great day for 20 needy families in the area. We raffled 2 twenty-five dollar visa gift cards for those who donated canned goods to help make this a success. Coworker Jessica Hedlhi coordinated and planned our annual craft and vendor fair. The event was a wonderful success with many great crafters and vendors, and raised over one thousand dollars for Moose Charities! Coworker Erica Saunders coordinated our Thanksgiving basket assembly and distribution. She did a wonderful job coordinating Girl Scouts and coworkers to make the event run smoothly! Because of the donations and volunteer efforts of our scouts and coworkers, twenty families in this area were able to enjoy a cheerful holiday with less stress, more joy, and plenty to eat. A big thank you goes out to all of you who helped in any way. Events like these really enable us to reach into the community and show the world what it s like to be a moose on a mission. December will bring with it many great events for our members, their children or grandchildren, as well as many needy families and children in our area. On December 2 nd Higher Degree Chairman will be holding the College of Regents Sunday game party. Doors will open at 12:30 and dinner will be served at 1.We will be enjoying baked or fried chicken and all of the fixin s. Please plan to come and bring a side dish to share. Sunday Game Parties are always a fun event and your side dishes and attendance are what make them successful. As an added incentive to come, if you bring 2 guests, your meal will be free! On December 13 th, our Membership Retention chairman, Karen Holtslander will be hosting our Jitney Game party. Dinner will be served at 6:00 and we would love to see each of you there. Movie Night at the Lodge Is your Family enjoying our Family Movie Night on the Second and Fourth Friday of the Month. If not, come out and join the fun with other Moose Families and enjoy free Popcorn! Page 2 of 8 Downloaded from www.virginiamoose.org Posted: 11/30/2018

Sr. Regent continued...on December 15 th we will be assembling and distributing our Christmas baskets to 20 local families starting at 9:00 am. On that same day, from 1:00-3:00 Sports and Activities chairman, Sarah Jones will be hosting the lodge children s Christmas party. I am sure there will be tons of fun and, of course, a visit from Santa! On the 16 th, from 4:00-6:00 we will be hosting 20 local children for our underprivileged children s Christmas party. Keep an eye out for our angel tree so you can help make Christmas memorable for a child who may not have a Christmas at all. These events are always very heartwarming and a great reminder of what this organization is all about! I am always so proud of our lodge and chapter during this time of year. I hope each of you enjoy your holidays and spend plenty of time with your families during this month. While it will be a busy one for the chapter, it is always one of my favorite months to be a coworker. One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don't clean it up too quickly." Andy Rooney Dates to Remember: 12/2- Higher Degree/College of Regents Sunday Game Party Doors open at 12:30, meal at 1:00 12/4- Audit 6:00pm 12/7- Chapter Activity Night 7:00pm 12/11- Board of Officers/Joint Board of Officers 6:30pm 12/13- Membership Retention Jitney 6:00pm 12/15- Christmas Basket Assembly and distribution 9:00am 12/15- Lodge kid s Christmas party 1:00-3:00pm 12/16- Underprivileged kids Christmas Party 4:00-6:00pm 12/20- Business Meeting 7:00pm 12/27- No Meeting! CHILI COOKOFF UPDATE: The Portsmouth Chili Peppers went on an adventure to our beloved MOOSEHAVEN in Florida. We entered the chili cookoff on November 10. We worked hard but ran out of chili before the competition ended. We met a lot of nice people who liked the chili and the wonderful hush puppies. We would like to go again next year. We would like to thank Lodge 898 and Chapter 966 for their support. There were several fundraising projects to make this trip possible. Thank you all very much. Line dancing at Lodge 898 For more information on the Wednesday evening line dance/practice activity please see Moose898dance page on Facebook. Line dancing g is a great low impact form of Exercise, Social time and Entertaining to watch. Higher Degree Veteran s Challenge: Following the Veteran s Dinner on Nov. 19 a project to replace the flagpole in front of the Moose Lodge was instituted with initial pledges by 3 Veteran s of $100 each. The project will cost an estimated $3000. The challenge to all Veteran s is to match with a $100 donation or any amount that you are comfortable giving. Non-veterans are being encouraged to donate as well to show their support. Any amount would be appreciated. Please contact Peck Seader or Bob Knight for more information. Due to the lodge closing during the Christmas holidays the next scheduled meeting is December 18 at 7pm. Rebecca Weeks Higher Degree Chairman Do you like to cruise or would you like to take a cruise but are not sure where to start? Bruce Smith has obtained info for a May 12 17, 2019 cruise. PLEASE contact Trish Bunting at 757-499-9920 or trish@lescapetravel.com or talk to Bruce. Page 3 of 8 Downloaded from www.virginiamoose.org Posted: 11/30/2018

From the Administrator: Another great month of activities and events at Portsmouth Lodge 898. In addition to our regular weekly activities, for the third year, we hosted the Special Olympics Volleyball team for dinner and DJ. They always seem to have a great time. The Craft & Vendor fair was a huge success. It gets bigger every year. Thanks Jessica! Thanksgiving Dinner baskets were passed out by the Women of the Moose, good job ladies. Lodge 898 was definitely represented at the Moose Haven Chili Cookoff. Our team did a great job. We didn t win but we sold out of Chili. It was a hit. Thanks to our team of chefs. On Veterans Day, We honored all Veterans by putting out all of our flags. They were flown for three days and got a lot of attention. We honored our Lodge Valued Veterans with a Certificate presentation dinner. Those Valued Veterans who self identified on the Moose website in the last six months were presented with their Valued Veterans Certificates and Lapel pins. Brother Carlos Williams was selected as Valued Veteran of the Year. If you are a veteran and haven t gone online to identify yourself as one, you should do so and at our next dinner you will receive a Certificate and Lapel pin. When you renew your membership, your new card will be a special card for Valued Veterans. Moose Lodge 898 Valued Veterans have taken on the project to purchase a new flagpole. It will probably take $3000 to buy and have it installed. There s been a challenge made to each Valued Veteran of a $100 donation for this project. We are also selling engraved DONOR BRICKS for $100 each to place at the bottom of the flagpole. You do not need to be a Valued Veteran to buy a brick. Don t forget these December events: 12-1 EVCHD HOLIDAY BALL 12-8 Breakfast with Santa 12-15 Lodge Kids Christmas party 12-16 Moose Riders Ice Cream Social at Hampton Veterans Hospital 12-22 Lodge Christmas Party 12-31 New Years Eve party w/ Wildheart Please note on the monthly calendar that we will have special hours the week of Christmas.
