Game Information Memphis Redbirds Media Relations Department 200 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38103 Phone: 901.722.0293 www.memphisredbirds.com @memphisredbirds Memphis Redbirds (59-62) vs. Tacoma Rainiers (70-51) Monday, August 15 6:35 p.m. (CT) AutoZone Park (10,000) Memphis, Tennessee Game #122 Home Game #63 (37-25) RHP Mike Mayers (3-5, 3.06) vs. RHP Sam Gaviglio (2-0, 2.10) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: The Memphis Redbirds try to become the first team since Reno from June 9-12 to win a four-game series against the Pacific Coast League-leading Tacoma Rainiers (Triple-A Mariners) in tonight s finale of a four-game set. The Redbirds took a 2-1 series lead with last night s 6-2 win, which came on the strength of Jeremy Hefner s 6.2 innings of work and David Washington s 23rd home run as a Redbird. The Rainiers lead the PCL with a 70-51 record, and a win would also give Memphis its first series win over Tacoma since a four-game sweep at AutoZone Park in 2010. Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56 and 87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Mike Mayers takes the ball tonight gunning for his first victory since June 30 at Omaha. Mayers is coming off a tough-luck loss in game one of a doubleheader last week at New Orleans, when he pitched 6.0 innings and gave up one unearned run on three hits, struck out six and did not issue a free pass. In his last two starts, Mayers has given up one earned run in 10.2 innings (0.88 ERA), but he is 0-1. Other than giving up five earned runs in one start and four in two others, Mayers nine other starts as a Redbird have either been shutout efforts or outings where he gave up one or two earned runs. In seven starts at AutoZone Park this season, Mayers is 2-2 with a 2.79 ERA, and opponents are hitting just.218 against him. The Redbirds will match up against Tacoma s Sam Gaviglio, who is fresh off a complete game, four-hit shutout against Sacramento in his last outing. Gaviglio, a former St. Louis Cardinals farm hand, was drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 draft out of Oregon State, but he never played in Memphis before being traded to the Mariners in 2014 for Ty Kelly. Gaviglio made a relief appearance against the Redbirds last season while with the Rainiers, when he struck out three and allowed a hit in 2.0 innings in Tacoma Aug. 25. THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY: In 1999, Larry Luebbers allowed three runs on three hits over 4.2 innings against Oklahoma. It was his 13th win of the season, which was tied with Lance Lynn (2010) for the most in a single season by a Redbirds pitcher until Tim Cooney won 14 in 2014. SCHEDULE WITH TACOMA: Memphis and Tacoma are scheduled to play four times in Memphis in 2016, and the two clubs have split the last five season series. The Rainiers have been affiliated with the Seattle Mariners ever since the Redbirds joined the PCL in 1998. Memphis has twice swept the Rainiers at AutoZone Park, coming in 2010 and 2002, and the Redbirds have never been swept in Tacoma. STATS AND TRENDS Memphis has won 14 of its last 20 home games, and with 10 home games remaining in the season, the Redbirds are four wins away from securing their most home victories since 45 in 2011 Memphis home winning percentage of.597 (37-25) is second-best in the PCL behind Tacoma s.650 (39-21) Memphis ranks 10th in the PCL in ERA (4.75), 11th in batting average (.265) and 14th in fielding percentage (.975) Memphis has played 42 one-run games this season, the second-most in the PCL behind Round Rock s 44, and the Redbirds have the league s sixth-best winning percentage in one-run games (.524; 22-20) Mike Ohlman is 10-for-26 (.385) on his seven-game hitting streak David Washington has walked in four-straight games after drawing a walk every 2.1 games over his first 83 games as a Redbird David Washington s 28 total home runs between Memphis and Double-A Springfield are fifth-most in all of minor league baseball David Washington s 28 home runs lead the Cardinals organization, and Harrison Bader s 15 are fourth Mike Mayers eight wins this season between Memphis and Double-A Springfield are tied for second in the Cardinals organization Carson Kelly has had a hit in 15 of the 21 games he has played in Memphis with a four-game and two separate fivegame hitting streaks Efren Navarro has hit in 25 of his 33 games as a Redbird Sam Tuivailala s 17 saves are tied for third-most in the PCL Left-handers are hitting.139 against lefty Ryan Sherriff this season (11-79) THE SEASON VALERA HITS IN 10-STRAIGHT: Breyvic Valera strung together a 10-game hitting streak from Aug. 1-9, in which he hit.500 (16-32) with seven walks and 10 RBI. He drove in a total of 13 runs in his first 39 Triple-A games before the streak. WEAVER JOINS MEMPHIS STAFF: Luke Weaver, the second-best prospect in the Cardinals organization behind Alex Reyes, was promoted to Memphis August 5 after making 12 starts at Double-A Springfield. in 77.0 innings in Springfield, and he walked 10 and struck out 88. In 191.2 minor league innings before ascending to Memphis, Weaver had a 1.09 WHIP, and opponents were hitting.240 against him. Weaver went to St. Louis Aug. 12 after making one start with the Redbirds. ANNA SEES DOUBLE IN JULY: Dean Anna was one of only five players in the Pacific Coast League to hit at least 10 doubles in the month of July. Anna is the first Redbird to hit 10 doubles in a month since Oscar Taveras in May 2014. NAVARRO RATTLES OFF A STREAK: Efren Navarro had a hit in 14 of his first 16 games played with the Redbirds and hit.421 (16-38) on an 11-game hitting streak from July 16-28. Navarro was signed as a free agent on July 8 after playing most of the season in Tacoma. ROLLING AT AUTOZONE PARK: The Redbirds won eight-straight games at AutoZone Park from the final of the series with Nashville July 6 through the third game of the series with Iowa July 24, which was its longest streak at home since winning nine-straight from Aug. 18-30, 2010. IN HINDSIGHT, WE DECLINE THE ALL-STAR BREAK: In a tale of how time off, even in a 144-game baseball season, could be a detriment to momentum, the Memphis Redbirds lost the first six games after the All-Star Break after entering the break on a seasonlong five-game winning streak and above.500 at 45-44 for the first time since they were 7-6. Memphis was outscored 58-34 in the first six games after the break, following a 33-21 run advantage in the five preceding games. The Redbirds finished the road trip 1-7, which is tied for the second-worst road swing in franchise history. WELCOME TO MEMPHIS: Of the 52 players who have played for Memphis so far in 2016, 19 were making their Triple-A debut including nine pitchers and four catchers. Two of the most recent additions, Carson Kelly and Harrison Bader, are rated as the 10th-best and 15th-best prospects in the Cardinals organization, respectively, by Baseball America. BADER BARELY NEEDS A YEAR: In just 383 days from his College World Series finale with the Florida Gators on June 20, 2015, Harrison Bader made it to Triple-A when he debuted with a 1-5 showing and a double and a run on July 6. REYES SERVES AS THE FUTURE : Redbirds starting pitcher Alex Reyes was chosen to represent the World Team in the MLB Futures Game in San Diego, and he struck out four in 1.2 innings as the team s starting pitcher. An undrafted free agent, Reyes is in his fourth season as part of the Cardinals organization and first at the Triple-A level after moving to the Dominican Republic while in high school to live with his grandmother. SHERRIFF ADDED TO TRIPLE-A ALL-STAR GAME: Redbirds relief pitcher Ryan Sherriff was chosen to replace Sam Tuivailala on the Pacific Coast League roster for the Triple-A All-Star Game July 13 in Charlotte after Tuivailala was recalled by St. Louis. In 42.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen at the time of his selection, Sherriff had a 2.13 ERA and a 3-0 record. He ranked fifth in the PCL in both lowest batting average-against (.196) and fewest baserunners allowed per nine innings (9.8). Sherriff started the eighth inning and retired the only hitter he faced, while Redbirds manager Mike Shildt, a Charlotte native, served as a coach for the PCL All-Stars. TUIVAILALA NAMED TRIPLE-A ALL-STAR: Redbirds pitcher Sam Tuivailala was selected to the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game but did not pitch due to his promotion to St. Louis. At the time of the selection, Tuivailala was tied for fourth in the PCL with 12 saves, and his 13.6 K/9 IP ratio was second in the league. In 28 appearances covering 31.0 innings, Tuivailala struck out 47 and walked 15, and he was limiting opponents to a.231 batting average. Tuivailala was also named a PCL All-Star in 2015, but he did not pitch in that game, either, due to a promotion to St. Louis. MEMPHIS A REMEDY FOR STRUGGLES: Kolten Wong, Jeremy Hazelbaker and Randal Grichuk were all optioned to Memphis from St. Louis at one point in June to work on various aspects of their games, and the results were instantaneous in all cases. Wong hit two home runs in his first game and hit.429 with four home runs, 11 RBI and a 1.458 OPS in seven games (June 9-16), Hazelbaker had three multi-hit games, including two three-hit performances, in his first three full games, and Grichuk homered in his first game and drove in seven runs in his first three starts. REDBIRDS SEE MAJOR LEAGUE EXPERIENCE RISE: Prior to May 19, when Tommy Pham was optioned to Memphis, the Redbirds had six players on their roster with a combined 293 major league games (1.8 seasons). From May 19 through June 18, when Randal Grichuk followed Jeremy Hazelbaker in being optioned to Memphis, the Redbirds saw players with a combined 1,209 big league games (7.5 seasons) spend time in The Bluff City (Pham, Kolten Wong, Michael McKenry, Jerome Williams, Hazelbaker, Grichuk). HAZELBAKER, GRICHUK ADDED TO MEMPHIS OF: Jeremy Hazelbaker and Randal Grichuk were optioned to Memphis on June 17 and 18, respectively, after playing the entire season in St. Louis. Hazelbaker hit.333 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI in 58 games in Memphis last season, and Grichuk most recently played in Memphis in 2014, where he hit 25 home runs in just 108 games. WONG WOWS IN WEEK IN MEMPHIS: Kolten Wong made quite the impact in seven games in Memphis after being optioned from St. Louis on June 7, hitting.429 (12-28) with four home runs, 10 runs scored, 11 RBI, a triple and four walks, for a.529 on base percentage and a.929 slugging percentage. He also played three games at center field, and he threw out a runner at the plate in his 17th inning played at the position since his freshman year of college. In his very first game, he opened the game with a home run and hit a walk-off grand slam, and he also had a twohomer game at Nashville on June 14. He was recalled by St. Louis June 17. WASHINGTON REWARDED FOR MAY: David Washington was named the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for May after hitting.287 (29-101) with 11 home runs, which co-lead all of minor league baseball during the month, and 25 RBI in 29 games between Double-A Springfield and Memphis. Washington hit.309 with nine home runs and 21 runs batted in over 24 games after arriving in Memphis from Springfield on May 5. He also had a 12-game hitting streak from May 8-21, which was the second-longest active streak in the Pacific Coast League at the time it was snapped. TOP PROSPECT ALEX REYES DEBUTS: Alex Reyes, the top-ranked prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals organization and seventh-ranked in all of Major League Baseball, pitched four innings and struck out eight in his season and Triple-A debut May 22. Reyes gave up two hits and walked three in his four innings of work in his first outing following a 50-game suspension. He allowed baserunners in each of the first three innings, including loading the bases in the second, but he struck out the final batter of the inning each time to escape without allowing a run. His eight strikeouts matched Arturo Reyes for the most by a Redbird starter in a game this season. Reyes threw 85 pitches and 48 for strikes. WASHINGTON S DOZEN: David Washington had a 12-game hitting streak from May 8-21, which covered his first 14 games played at the Triple-A level. He hit.340 with four home runs during the streak (17-50), which was the second-longest active streak in the PCL at the time it ended and the longest by a Redbird this season. EXTRA-BASE STRETCH: Memphis had at least one extra-base hit in the first 17 games of the season, until only having five singles in the series finale against Round Rock on April 26. Only Round Rock and Sacramento had equal streaks at the time Memphis ended. The Redbirds then had an extra-base hit in 26-straight games from May 8-June 3 before going without one in back-to-back games June 4 and 5. JEREMY HEFNER RETURNS: In his first appearance since August 6, 2014, after a second Tommy John surgery required him to miss the 2015 season, Jeremy Hefner allowed just one hit in 5.0 innings of work for his first outing of at least five innings and only one hit in his last 88 starts. OFFSEASON OWNERSHIP CHANGE: This spring, principal ownership of the Memphis Redbirds changed from the St. Louis Cardinals to Peter B. Freund. Freund is President of Trinity Packaging Corporation and Trinity Baseball Holdings. Trinity Baseball Holdings also owns the Charleston RiverDogs and the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Cardinals remain a minority owner in the Redbirds. As part of the move, third-year Redbirds General Manager Craig Unger was promoted to President and General Manager. COACHING STAFF: Manager Mike Shildt is in his second season at the helm in the Bluff City and is joined on the Memphis bench by returning pitching coach and former Redbirds pitcher Bryan Eversgerd (4th season), hitting coach Mark Budaska (9th season), coach Robby Hisert, athletic trainer Rafael Freitas, and strength coach Kevin Hyde (2nd season). In Shildt s first season, the team went 73-71 and finished second in the PCL American Southern.
