Library News from Mrs. Cox. If you have any questions, please email CoxT@anderson1.k12.sc.us Library News:

The summer reading program, Million Page Challenge, ends August 31 st. You can print a reading log from the library webpage. Mrs. Cox has lots of cool prizes ready for winners. App of the Week: MEanderthal Cost: Free Description: Like the early humans, MEanderthal is simple and effective. The app morphs a facial image into one of an early human. There are four choices (two males, two females) of early human. A user can either take a new photo or use an already existing one. Once a photo is taken, you are able to scale the image to best fit the morphing program. Then you choose your species of human and watch yourself regress. This app is fun but also educational. The app comes from the Natural History Museum and includes facts about early humans. Note from Mr. Armstrong about personal communication devices: Abbreviated Copy of District Communication Devices Policy The policy on personal communication devices (including pagers and cellular telephones) is one that is set for our school by the Board of Trustees of the school district. That is to say, we didn t make the rules, but we do have to enforce them. It is our intention to comply with Board policies in a consistent, fair manner. In case there is any confusion as to exactly what the policy is, the following important points are being stated here: Operating (i.e., turned on ) cell phones or paging devices are not allowed and cannot be used or visible during the regular academic day (7:50 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Students are to store such devices, out of sight, in pockets, bags, backpacks, etc. (NOTE: Cell phones may be used on campus between students arrival and 7:50 a.m., but only as personal listening devices. Please read policy on Use of Personal Listening Devices.)

Operating (i.e., turned on ) cell phones or paging devices are not allowed en route to and from school on school buses. Students are to store such devices, out of sight, in pockets, bags, backpacks, etc. while on buses. Operating (i.e., turned on ) cell phone or paging devices are allowed on the school campus (and in buildings) after the regular school day has ended (3:00 p.m.). Board policy states that the following penalties apply to students who violate the policy: First offense student warning, parent conference with administrator, device returned at conference. Second offense one day of in school suspension, parent conference with administrator, device returned at conference. Third offense one day of out of school suspension, parent conference with administrator, device returned at conference, the student is prohibited from possessing or using any cell phone or paging device at school or on school district property for the remainder of the year. Fourth offense three days of out of school suspension and retention of the cell phone or paging device until the end of the school year. The school principal reserves the right to further limit and/or confiscate these devices if the use of these devices is causing a disruption to the school. The district will make an exception to these rules when the student needs the paging device/cell phone for a legitimate, documented medical reason. However, before a student may have a paging device at school, the principal must have written, approved evidence on file of the student s medical need for the device. The principal of each school will decide what constitutes a legitimate medical reason consistent with any guidelines established by the board and/or by the state department of education. Note: Although the District will take appropriate steps to safeguard all cellular telephones and paging devices that are confiscated, the District will not be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged devices. Palmetto Middle Policy Use of Personal Listening Devices While the student handbook discourages students from bringing personal listening devices (e.g., radios, CD players, mp3 players, etc.) to school, it is understood that many students like to have them for use on the bus and after school, etc. In an effort to make allowance for proper use of such devices, the administration has developed what we believe is a reasonable policy. Palmetto Middle s policy on personal listening devices is as follows: Students may use personal listening devices on campus at the following times/places:

Before school in the mornings while waiting in the hallways, gym, etc. (But not after being released to homeroom.) At times when a teacher has given special permission for a group of students (such as during computer lab work, etc.) to use such devices. Anywhere on campus after dismissal at 3:00 p.m. At all other times, listening devices should be put away (out of sight). Earphones must be used with the listening device any time it is in operation. Violation of the policy will result in the issuing of four demerits to the student. As long as the use of these devices is kept within the above guidelines we will continue to allow them at school. If their use causes unanticipated problems, we will consider a total ban on such devices. Note from our school nurse about our medication Procedures: If you have any questions, please email CrawfordR@anderson1.k12.sc.us All of the following must be met before medication can be administered to your child at school. Medications at 1. For non-prescription medication: a non-prescription medication form must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian prior to administering the medication. The following information must be included on the form: student s full name, name of medication, dosage and time to be administered, reason/why given and parent/guardian contact information. A new form must be completed every school year. This form can be obtained from the school nurse, office secretaries, or the following link: Non Prescription Medicine Form on the school website. For non-prescription/over-the-counter medication: the dosage may only be given in accordance with the instructions on the container. If more than the recommended dosage is requested, then a prescription form must be completed with physician signature. The expiration date on the medication must be good. 2. For prescription medication: a prescription medication form must be completed. The top section must be signed by the parent/guardian and the bottom section must be completed and signed by the student s physician. The following information must be included on this form: student s full name, date of birth, name of medication, dosage and time, side effect/adverse reaction, beginning date and ending date, and physician contact information. A new form must be completed every school year. This form can be obtained from the school nurse, office secretaries, or the following link: Prescription Medicine on the school website. The school is never allowed to give the first dose of a new medication.

3. All medication must be brought in its original container and properly labeled. For prescription medication, it must be labeled with the student s name and the medication name, dosage and time. This information must match the medication form. 4. Students are not allowed to carry or keep medication with them during the school day or on the bus. Medications must be brought to the nurse or office. An exception to this requires individual review by the nurse and principal and additional paperwork. 5. All medications will be destroyed if not picked up by the last day of school. Robin N.
