Oganization and Staff PART 1 Pettipaug Sailing Academy (PSA) is a not fo pofit, educational, 501(c)3 copoation. Since 1961 PSA has been teaching sailos the fine points of sailing, acing, cuising and life. PSA is managed by a Boad of Govenos. Boad of Govenos: The Boad meets once a month to supevise activities of the Club and PSA. Membes of ou boad attend the National Sailing Pogams Symposium annually as well as many othe national, egional, aea and local meetings thoughout the yea. One boad membe is the US Sailing Regional Taining Coodinato. Though these activities we ae in vey good position to be up to date on local and national tends and events. PSA Chaiman: The boad appoints a boad membe to be the Sailing Academy Chaipeson to ovesee and manage PSA, and is esponsible fo hiing the PSA staff. While the chaiman is not at PSA duing the day, infomation on how to contact him o he is on the intoductoy page of this handbook. PSA Diecto: Day to day opeations of PSA duing the season ae handled by the Sailing Academy Diecto. He/she is esponsible to the chaiman of PSA fo all activities that PSA takes pat in. The diecto is esponsible fo managing the sailing staff, including the instuctos, junio instuctos and all othe academy staff membes. The diecto is also the main contact fo Boad Membes, paents, and othes inteested in any aspect of the day to day opeation of PSA. Instuctos ae the pimay instuctional staff at PSA. This summe we have seven full-time instuctos. They ae esponsible fo pepaing dass activities, ecod keeping, unning classes, discipline and all othe activities associated with teaching sailing at PSA. Ou instuctos ae vey well tained and of the highest calibe. They ae all US Sailing Small Boat Sailing cetified instuctos which equies a fou-day instucto couse as well as a valid CPR and Basic Fist Aid cetification. Some have gone on to become US Sailing Small Boat Racing cetified equiing an additional two days of intense taining. We also send them to an ECSA instucto clinic each yea and often to othe specialized seminas. Junio Instuctos: PSA also has a numbe of Junio Instuctos who help the staff duing the moning sessions. Thei esponsibilities include sailing with new sailos, helping ig and deig boats, and othe vaious jobs essential to a smooth unning pogam. 1

Pogam Goals To accomplish these goals we need the help and active coopeation of the Boad, staff, paents, sailos and fiends. Membes of the Boad and Academy voluntees spend countless hous evey yea woking to make PSA a success. The pimay goals of PSA ae (in no paticula ode): 1. Develop spotsmanship, integity and intepesonal skills. 2. Instill in the students an admiation fo sailing. 3. Develop a espect fo the sea and the elements. 4. Lean and incopoate safety and seamanship. 5. Instill esponsibility fo boats and equipment. 6. Ceate a fun atmosphee in which childen want to paticipate. 7. Povide the envionment and education fo those who want to compete and those who do not. Student Pepaation Each day, befoe coming to PSA, please help you child(en) by making cetain they ae pepaed fo class. Sailing is stenuous, had wok and can at times be dangeous. It is impeative that eveyone at PSA be on thei best behavio, well ested, alet, well nouished and have all the pope equipment. Pepae fo sailing by: 1. Eating a pope meal befoe coming to PSA. 2. Applying sunblock libeally. 3. Weaing sunglasses with full UV potection. 4. Weaing a hat that will be secue if it is windy. 5. Weaing shoes at all times (in boats, on docks and on clubhouse deck). Boat shoes and tevas ae acceptable. Sandals that slip off easily, like flip-flops, ae not acceptable. 6. Paental Involvement Fist and foemost, we welcome paents involvement with thei childen in the pogam. We have included a list of things paents can do to help the pogam be a success. 1. Shae comments and suggestions with Diecto. 2. Help you child be pepaed fo class each day (see Student Pepaation). 3. Remind students that pope behavio (espectful, esponsible) is equied. 4. Call Diecto wheneve you child is absent. If you have any planned absences, please let the Diecto know as soon as you ae awae of them. 5. Dop off and pick up you child on time. No moe than 15 minutes befoe o afte a session. 6. Regatta Tanspotation: Vehicles with taile hitches ae needed fo tanspoting boats to othe egattas at othe yacht clubs. 7. Team Racing Tanspotation: Once a week ou team tavels to othe yacht clubs. 2

Paent Voluntees Pettipaug needs paents to assist with many student activities and egatta events. We can always use an exta hand. Please contact the PSA Chaiman if you can voluntee. Comments, Suggestions and Poblems We ae always tying to impove the pogam. We welcome all suggestions, citicisms and compliments. The pogam is somewhat flexible, and if the easons ae compelling, changes can be made in midsteam if necessay. We equest that you put all comments, suggestions and complaints in witing to the Chaiman (addess listed on PSA staff page) so that we will be sue to follow up on them. Please include you name and telephone numbe so that we may contact you if futhe discussion is needed. Poblems need to be addessed as ealy as possible. Summes ae shot so don t let peceived poblems feste. In addition to binging you geneal comments to the pogam Chaiman, you can discuss concens about classes, acing, teaching methods and daily opeations with the Diecto. Except fo safety concens which need immediate attention, such discussions must be taken up outside class time and should be out of the pesence of childen and thid paties. Please do not hold up an entie class with issues that can be discussed at anothe time. Ou instuctos have been odeed to walk away fom any convesation that becomes uncivil in natue, and epot the incident to the Diecto and the Chaiman. Launch Sevice The Sailing Academy staff ae not launch opeatos fo club membes. Instuctos ae at the club to teach sailing. The club safety boats ae not available to club membes duing Sailing Academy sessions. Pettipaug Yacht Club Membeship Pettipaug Yacht Club junio membeship is available to all PSA students fo $15. Senio (family) membeship equies the applicant to be poposed by anothe membe, who will collect the necessay fou lettes. The Boad of Govenos will then vote on the application. The new membe then pays the annual dues and the initiation fee. Sexual Haassment and Abuse Awaeness In light of ecent litigation, eveyone should be sensitive to peceived conduct and the effect it has on what is consideed appopiate and inappopiate behavio. While this may be a sad commentay on ou times, it is impotant to be AWARE of these issues and to make sound judgments. Bullying Bullying is the wilful, conscious desie to hut anothe and put him/he unde stess. Tattum, D and Tattum, E. (1992) Social Education and Pesonal Development. London,: David Fulton. At Pettipaug Sailing Academy, thee is zeo toleance fo bullies and bullying behavio. We opeate on the thee-stikes policy: waning, suspension, expulsion. 3

PART 2 Boats: C/C 420s, Optimist dinghies and Blue Jays Pettipaug Sailing Academy owns some sailboats. We boow C/C 420s boats fom Tinity College and fom geneous academy families and fiends. Pettipaug Sailing Academy uses these boowed boats at its discetion in ou sailing classes. Families with students in the pogam ae encouaged to own and donate Blue Jays o Optimist dinghies to the pogam. The two types of boats that Pettipaug will accept fo use in the pogam ae Blue Jays and Optimist dinghies. These boats ae sailed extensively in this aea. The 420 and the Optimist ae sailed heavily aound the wold, and the C/C 420 is used in many college sailing pogams. Blue Jays have been used at PSA and othe Long Island Sound and New Jesey junio sailing pogams since the foties. They ae good double-handed taining boats. Boat donations: Boats donated to the pogam emain the popety of the dono. The donation is actually the use of the boat duing PSA. Families who donate boats ae entitled to a tuition efund fo each student enolled, and because PSA is a 501(c)3 non-pofit copoation, a tax deduction equivalent to the chate value of an equivalent boat fo the same peiod may be taken. (The value and tax benefit deived fom such a donation is up to the dono to detemine. Check with a knowledgeable tax adviso.) Othe donations ae also welcome. Please contact a boad membe if you ae inteested in making a contibution. Owning and donating a boat to the pogam is vey wothwhile. Some mutual benefits ae: Allows PSA to function Saves owne tuition Povides a tax deduction Allows sailo to sail duing non-psa hous Allows sailo to attend egattas at PSA and othe clubs Teaches sailo esponsibility fo owning and maintaining a boat Outside of PSA pogam hous (evenings, weekends and off-season) the boat is fee to be used by the owne. Duing the pogam hous, PSA uses donated boats fo all pogam students to use. You child may o may not sail you boat. If you desie that they use you boat, please make it known to the Diecto and he will do what he can. In the end, howeve, the best inteests of the sailo ae consideed most impotant, and the sailo will be assigned to a class and boat that best fits his skills and abilities. Boat use fo egattas: In ode to attend egattas at othe clubs, sailos must eithe own a boat o boow a boat fom a boat owne. Geneally PSA has enough boats so that some pogam boats will be able to be eleased to the owne fo egatta attendance. Please be sue to alet the staff as soon as possible as to you plans fo using boats. In ae instances, we may equie that a boat stay at PSA. 4

Boowing boats fo egattas: Sailos who boow boats should intend to etun the boat in bette condition than it was boowed. PSA has guidelines fo boowing, using and etuning boats fo egattas. Realize, howeve, that it is up to the owne and the boowe to agee on all the details of use of the boat. PSA does help aange fo boat boowing. Boats used at egattas in this manne ae not the esponsibility of PSA, and we will not make epais due to damage fom egatta use. Boat damage: PSA does epai damage caused by students duing nomal PSA use. Paents of a student who causes intentional o avoidable damage to any club o pivate popety ae expected to pay fo any damage done. Neve Owned a Boat? PSA is a place fo eveyone to lean childen and paents alike. Many of ou students families ae new to sailing. As we depend upon families to help us out by owning and donating boats, we ae also hee to help you decide if boat owneship is fo you. We can help you decide what type of boat would be appopiate fo you child, and will even do infomal suveys of locally available boats used by PSA. We also keep tabs on the local boat maket, and often can help you find o sell a boat. If you have any questions about boat owneship, please feel fee to contact Bob Cashman o Ann Coucy. CHECK LIST FOR STUDENT SAILORS You need to bing (o wea) the following items to class eveyday: Coast Guad appoved life jacket (the vest type ae most comfotable) Shoes (Tevas, boat shoes o sneakes but NO flip flops) Sunsceen (put it on befoe you aive) Hat Change of clothes/towel Wate bottle... filled, especially on hot, humid days Snack 5

PART 3 Classes Classes follow a flexible lesson plan. Weathe conditions and safety ae majo consideations in planning daily lessons. The leaning pocess is a continuous one, and sailos missing a lot of classes will be at a disadvantage. Please discuss planned absences with the Diecto. Sailing Ranks PSA has a seies of skill sets (anks) which ae taught by ou instuctos. Each instucto is esponsible fo teaching these skills to his o he goup on an ongoing basis. A student almost always advances one ank each yea and it is possible to advance two anks each yea. Sailing Ranks ae designed aound the designations used in the eal woking wold of seamanship and ae intended to einfoce each student s sense of achievement and pogess. Each student will be evaluated at the beginning of each semeste and placed in a class woking towads a ank which the Instuctos detemine is appopiate fo thei skill level and abilities. Most anks ae designed to be leaned in a sequence as follows: SEAMAN SEAMAN FIRST CLASS SECOND MATE FIRST MATE BOATSWAIN SKIPPER RACING SKIPPER Some anks ae designed to be achievable by many students in a single session but othes may take moe time, such as BOATSWAIN and SKIPPER. All students will eceive cetificates fo thei paticipation at the gaduation awads egadless of the ank they achieve. Some students may equie moe than othes to achieve some of ou anks. Ou instuctos undestand that all students will pogess best at thei own pace. This is the best way to cultivate a life-long enjoyment of the wondeful activity of sailing. Please confim that you child has been placed in the coect level duing the fist week of you PSA session. 6

PART 4 Racing Sailos who have gone though PSA have competed at the top national and intenational level. Seveal fome students have been All-Ameican sailos at the college level, sailed in US Sailing National Championships, involved in Olympic campaigns and woked with Ameica s Cup Challenges. It is possible that you childen will go in these diections as well and we will always be hee to do what we can to suppot ou sailos in these activities. Howeve, ou goal is not to tun out wold-class champions yea in and yea out. We ae just as happy to expose ou sailos to the adventues and fun of sailing, foste a love of sailing and geneally how to be good people. Racing Philosophy: Competition is an essential pat of the highe level classes. We believe that seveal benefits ae deived fom acing. Childen (and adults fo that matte) often don t undestand o develop the fine points of sailing unless they can see the effects of thei actions as measued against anothe boat sailing alongside. The leaning cuve is geneally heightened when thee is a clealy identifiable shot-tem goal. While encouaging fiendly competition, we ty to avoid divisive activities. We believe sailos should lean the acing ules. This includes allowing potests and the subsequent heaings, Racing Potests: This is an impotant pocess and helps sailos lean the nuances of the ules. Junio sailing potests at PSA ae geneally used as a leaning expeience fo all sailos. We discouage the use of the ules as a weapon to gain an advantage. We use the 720 penalty which, in most cases, allows the sailo to sail in two complete cicles to exoneate himself of a foul befoe continuing the ace. This allows a sailo who knows he made a mistake to take a penalty and continue acing, avoiding the moe sevee penalty of disqualification if a subsequent potest wee lost. We ty neve to foget that sailing should be fun. Paents should be instumental in suppoting thei childen and helping them undestand that thee is a system fo esolving disputes. The system does not always function popely, but childen should be taught to deal with it, accept the esults, o fight within the system and then move on. Racing Oppotunities Sailos ae encouaged to seiously conside thei abilities when deciding whethe to paticipate in any of these aces. Fiday Seies is held duing the aftenoon session of PSA and is open to any junio sailo who is a membe of Pettipaug Yacht Club o any PSA student. Races ae un fo Optimists, Blue Jays and C/C 420s, assuming thee o moe of each class ae in attendance. The Fiday Seies is not pat of the egula lesson pogam of PSA. It is an entiely optional activity. Ou instuctos un the aces and will hold bief meetings befoe and afte the acing to make the seies as much of a leaning event as possible. Potests will be head by the instuctos afte the acing concludes fo the day, Fiday Seies acing is as effective a leaning tool as ou egula classes. Thee is no instuction and effectively no assistance duing sailing fo aces. Races will be held in vitually all safe weathe conditions. Racing will not be canceled if only pat of the fleet decides to sail. Instuctos may estict some paticipants fom sailing if the conditions ae too sevee fo paticula sailos. Safety is ou pimay concen. A smat sailo knows when not to go out. Regattas: Taveling to othe yacht clubs fo egattas is aguably the most memoable expeience fo ou sailos. Besides the enjoyment of the competition itself, the social aspects ae significant. The childen spend a lot of time on and off the wate with othe sailos up and down the Sound, and at highe levels, aound the county and the wold. Many local egattas ae listed in the ECSA Junio Yeabook. Please ask fo a copy fom you instucto if you want to see what is going on in the aea in Junio Sailing. The ECSA Yeabook contains dates of egattas, enty foms and diections to the yacht clubs. PSA will also maintain a calenda of local and egional events that ou sailos will be attending. Paent voluntees ae always needed to instill in the students an admiation fo sailing and to help move people, boats and equipment to and fom egattas and team-acing events. Don t be shy about volunteeing, and don t be supised if you eceive a call asking fo help, especially if you child is taveling to an event. Sailos who want to attend a egatta should be in contact with the Diecto as soon as possible. We will maintain a list of sailos and boats going to each event. We will do ou best to help coodinate moving people, boats and gea. It is not the instuctos job to move all the boats, to ig boats o keep tack of gea at egattas. They will help out when they can, but sailos and paents need to take full esponsibility fo thei paticipation at any egatta. When conditions pemit, a PSA instucto o epesentative will accompany ou sailos to egattas and help sailos befoe, between and afte acing. Paents ae encouaged to attend egattas with thei childen. At lage egattas, fleets ae usually boken up by age and expeience, and thee ae always some sailos who ae not vey good sailos. The best way to lean is to go acing a lot. It may often be fustating, but it is neve humiliating. Team Racing: Each week, membes of the PSA Team Racing Team compete against anothe yacht club. The esults ae compiled thoughout the season and a egional Team Racing Championship is held at the end of the season. 14
