McCallie helped her current star reach a milestone. Chante Black scored 16 points and reached 1,000 for her career in the eighth-ranked Blue Devils 98-31 rout of Maine on Nov. 16, 2008. Krystal Thomas had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Joy Cheek added 10 points. Duke shot nearly 48 percent while holding Maine to 26 percent shooting in helping McCallie beat the Maine program she led to six NCAA tournaments in eight seasons from 1992-2000. Maine had more turnovers (38) than points. Duke turned those miscues into 44 points, held a 56-17 rebounding advantage, limited the Black Bears to one fi eld goal over the fi rst 12 minutes and held them to single digits until the fi nal minute of the fi rst half. Black became the 24th player in Duke history to reach the 1,000-point mark with her basket in the post roughly four minutes in. She had her way with Maine s undersized lineup. Maine, which didn t have a player taller than 6-3 on the roster, had no answers for the 6-5 Black or the 6-4 Thomas, who helped the Blue Devils outscore the Black Bears 50-14 in the paint. Cheek Catches Fire... Senior Joy Cheek caught fi re against 24thranked James Madison on Friday as she totaled a career-high 21 points, had seven rebounds, one steal and one assist in only 25 minutes. Cheek has registered double-fi gure scoring in six contests, while four of those six games have been played at home. Over the last four games, Cheek has hit 3-of-5 from downtown. Christmas Makes Third Start... After coming off the bench and registering doubledigit scoring in three straight games, junior Karima Christmas was rewarded with the start against 24thranked James Madison. In the game, Christmas scored seven points, pulled down eight rebounds, two assists and one steal in 25 minutes. Christmas made her third start of the season and fi fth of her career. She is averaging 7.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.5 steals on the year. In the NCAA Stats... Through games of Dec. 13, Duke ranks fi fth nationally in steals (14.4), 14th in rebound margin (10.4) and 23rd in blocked shots per game (5.4). James Madison ranks 21st nationally in fi eld goal percentage defense (33.8). On the Road... Duke will play its fourth true road game of the season at Maine on Monday. The Blue Devils are 1-2 on the road this season with losses at 16th-ranked Texas A&M and at second-ranked Stanford. In those contests, the Blue Devils are pulling down an average of 50.7 rebounds a game, while holding opponents to only 35.0. Duke is forcing 23.3 turnovers and registering 15.0 steals. The Blue Devils have hit only 11-of-51 treys (21.6%) in those games. Jasmine Thomas (15.3), Joy Cheek (11.0 points) and Karima Christmas (10.0) are averaging doublefi gure scoring on the road. Thomas Posting All-America Like Numbers... Junior Jasmine Thomas turned in one of the most dominating performances ever seen in Cameron Indoor Stadium against third-ranked Ohio State on Thursday, Dec. 3. Thomas scored a career-high 29 points, had two assists and two steals. She hit a career-high 10 fi eld goals out of 20 attempts and nailed 2-of-4 from downtown. Thomas backed that up in the next contest against Southern California with 28 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and hit a career-high 10-of-10 from the free throw line. At second-ranked Stanford, Thomas had 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 38 minutes. Thomas came within three assists of her second triple-double of the season against 24th-ranked James Madison with 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. In four games against ranked opponents this season, Thomas is averaging 20.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals in four contests. So far on the year, Thomas is averaging 16.5 Joanne P.
