The Rockets won back-toback games for the first time this season with their 87-59 triumph over Chicago State last Saturday. The Redwolves have played just five games this season and dropped an 87-46 decision at Purdue on Wednesday evening. Toledo is in its 100th year of basketball and the preseason pick to win the Mid-American Conference by numerous publications. UT is in search of its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1980 after posting a school-record 27-7 win-loss mark last year. Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk has guided the Rockets to a 65-41 (.613) win-loss mark since the start of the 2011-12 season. All five Rocket starters possess double-figure scoring averages to help the Toledo rank second in the MAC with 76.6 ppg. A member of the 2015 Bob Cousy Award Watch List, senior guard Julius Brown leads the Rockets with 14.8 ppg and is shooting a team-best 48.8 percent (20-of-41) from three-point range. Also scoring in double figures for UT are senior guard Justin Drummond (12.4, 38.1 3FG%), senior forward J.D. Weatherspoon (12.1), sophomore guard Jonathan Williams (11.9) and junior center Nathan Boothe (10.1, 57.9 FG%). Toledo ranks fourth nationally (as of Dec. 9) with a MAC-best 77.4 free-throw percentage. Three Rockets Brown (93.3), freshman guard Kurt Hall (92.3) and Boothe (90.9) are topping the 90-percent mark from the charity stripe. Brown has started all 106 games of his collegiate career at point guard and Boothe has been UT s starting center in 69-of-70 contests. The one game Boothe didn t take the floor as part of the starting five was last year s Senior Day contest vs. EMU. Weatherspoon is averaging a team-best 6.5 rpg and ranks second on the team with a 55.9 FG%. He also leads the team with 17 dunks. Williams is shooting 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from three-point range over the last four contests and averaging 15.0 ppg during this stretch. Since going 0-for-5 in his first two games this season, Williams has a 48.5 3PTFG% (16-of-33). Arkansas State is tied with Houston, UNC-Wilmington, Nicholls State and Ohio for the fewest games played in the nation. Sophomore forward Anthony Livingston possesses a team-high 18.6 ppg and 7.0 rpg and is in his first season with the Redwolves after attending San Jacinto Junior College last year.

ENTERING THE HISTORY BOOKS Toledo established a school record with 27 victories last year, three more than the previous mark of 24 that was established in the 1939-40 season. The Rockets 20-win campaign was their first since 2005-06 as well as their 19th 20-win season in school history. Kent State s 30-6 record in 2001-02 is the most ever wins registered by a MAC school followed by Ball State (29-3, 1988-89) and Kent State (28-7, 2007-08). Below are the MAC s Top 10 win totals: 1. When looking at his career record minus his first season at the helm of both Green Bay and Toledo, Coach Kowalczyk s record is 191-133 (.590) overall and 100-68 (.595) in conference play. His record at the helm of the Rockets since the 2011-12 season is 62-39 (.614). Kowalczyk produced a seven-win improvement from Year 1 (10-20) to Year 2 (17-11) at Green Bay. He doubled that feat and more at Toledo in the 2011-12 campaign as UT registered 15 more wins (4-28 to 19-17) than his first season at the Rocket helm. ROCKETS IN THE POLLS Toledo is ranked No. 20 in this week s CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll. UT s highest ranking ever in the 15-year history of the poll was No. 2 when it was 12-0 last year before falling at Kansas. The Rockets received 158 points in the poll and was joined by two MAC schools No. 9 Akron (497) and No. 22 Eastern Michigan (117). Western Michigan (37), Buffalo (26), Bowling Green (22) and Central Michigan (13) also received votes. The Rockets are also a near-unanimous pick to win the MAC s West Division as well as the MAC Tournament. UT received 18 of 20 first-place votes to win the West Division and 15 of 20 to capture the MAC Tournament. ROCKETS RANKING AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS Toledo ranks fourth nationally with its impressive 77.4 free-throw percentage (thru games played Dec. 9). Alabama leads the nation at 80.3 percent followed by Eastern Kentucky at 79.0 percent and Mississippi at 77.6 percent. In the 2013-14 campaign, Rockets ranked 20th nationally with 79.2 ppg and is 51st this season at 76.6 ppg. The Rockets also ranked in the Top 20 in turnover margin (16th/+3.5) and assist/turnover ratio (13th/1.47). On an individual basis, senior guard Julius Brown ranks 19th with a 48.8 three-point field-goal percentage. Western Michigan s Austin Richie and Central Michigan s John Simons rank second and third at 60.6 and 60.5 percent, respectively. RECORDS, RECORDS & MORE RECORDS Toledo opened its 2013-14 season with 12 straight victories, matching the second-best start in school history, before dropping a 93-83 decision at national power Kansas. UT also set school records for most points (2,694), free throws made (643), free throws attempted (887) and were second in school history in field-goals made (929) and fourth in assists (509) and blocked shots (101). Toledo Men s Basketball Game Notes - page 3 Rockets by the Numbers 1: Toledo is No. 1 in the MAC and ranks fourth nationally with a 77.4 FT%, UT led the MAC in charity stripe efficiency in the 2011-12 (72.6%) and 2012-13 (76.1%) campaigns before finishing second last year with a 72.5 mark. 2: Toledo ranks 2nd in the MAC in attendance with its average of 4,361 fans. Toledo has won 32 of its last 38 home games (including 19-3 vs. MAC opponents) dating back to 2011-12 and was 15-0 last season. The Rockets unbeaten record last year at home was their first since 1966-67 and just the fourth time in school history UT has accomplished the feat. Toledo posted an 11-8 ledger in Savage Arena in 2011-12 for its first winning home record since the 2007-08 campaign when it registered a 9-3 mark. After experiencing just one losing home campaign (7-9 in 1991-92) in the previous 51 years, the Rockets notched 6-7, 4-11 and 4-12 win-loss marks for a combined 14-30 (.318) ledger over the previous three years (2008-11) in Savage Arena. Prior to the 2008-09 season, UT had posted a 55-8 (.873) home record for a five-year period from 2003-08 and was 107-23 (.823) on its homecourt from 1998-2008. Toledo s 18-game homecourt win streak that ended with an 82-79 loss to Detroit on Nov. 25 was tied for the second longest unbeaten stretch in school history. The Rockets also won 18 in a row from Dec. 30, 1946-Dec. 30, 1948. During UT s streak, the Rockets average margin of victory was 13.9 ppg with just five games decided by less than nine points a 71-67 win over Cleveland St. (Dec. 21), a 67-65 buzzerbeating victory over Buffalo (Jan. 15), an 81-78 triumph over Kent State (Jan. 26), an 83-76 win over Bowling Green (Feb. 5) and an 82-76 victory over Ohio (Feb. 12).... AND ROAD SUCCESS DEVELOPS AS WELL The Rockets are 12-10 in their last 22 road tilts dating back to the 2012-13 season. Toledo won four of its last five road contests in 2012-13 with wins at Ball State, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan and its only loss at Buffalo. In 2013-14, the Rockets were 9-6 on the road (as well as 3-1 in neutral-site contests) to post their first winning road mark since a 7-6 ledger in 1995-96. RUNNING THE SHOW Senior G Julius Brown emerged as the MAC s top point guard in 2013-14 and tied for 13th nationally with a MAC-high 6.0 assists per game while posting a MAC-best 2.2 assist/turnover ratio. A first-team All-MAC selection, he also ranked seventh in MAC scoring with a team-high 14.9 ppg. Brown has been named to the watch list for the 2015 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award and is one of 36 candidates who have been nominated for the award Brown, who leads the Rockets with 14.8 ppg and 5.0 apg, has improved his three-point shooting dramatically since his sophomore season when he shot just 26.7 percent from behind the arc. Drummond came to UT from Loyola (MD) and was honored with a third-team All-MAC selection, while Weatherspoon received honorable mention accolades after playing two seasons at Ohio State. Drummond averaged 14.2 ppg last year and ranks second on the team with 12.4 ppg and 0.9 bpg this season. He scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds vs. Western Michigan (March 1) and registered three double-doubles with 24 points and career-best 11 rebounds vs. Northern Illinois (Jan. 22), 16 points and 11 boards at Miami (Jan. 29) and 11 points and 10 rebound vs. Eastern Michigan (March 14). GOING HEAD-TO-HEAD IN NCAAs AT QUICKEN LOANS ARENA Seniors Justin Drummond and J.D. Weatherspoon were on opposing sides in the 2012 NCAA Tournament when Loyola (MD) and Ohio State faced each other inside Cleveland s Quicken Loans Arena on March 15, 2012. Drummond tallied four points in 15 minutes for the Greyhounds, while Weatherspoon saw three minutes of action for the victorious Buckeyes. BOOTHE A CONSISTENT POST PRESENCE Junior C Nathan Boothe has provided UT a solid offensive threat in the post since joining the program and possesses the ability to go inside or outside. The 2012-13 All-MAC Freshman Team member is fifth on the team with 10.1 ppg and second with 4.8 rpg. He also possesses a team-high 57.9 FG% (33-of-57) as well as a 41.7 3PTFG% (5-of-12) and 90.9 FT% (10-of-11). Boothe tied his career high with 19 points in UT s season opener vs. Northern Arizona (Nov. 16) and followed that up with 18 points at No. 15 VCU (Nov. 18). As a sophomore, Boothe averaged 9.2 ppg and 4.6 rpg also tied for the team lead with an 87.1 FT% (54-of-62). Boothe has started 69 of 70 games as a Rocket and averaged 8.3 ppg and 5.2 rpg as a freshman. JOINING THE STARTING FIVE A member of the MAC s All-Freshman Team last year, sophomore G Jonathan Williams replaced former three-time all-conference honoree Rian Pearson in UT s starting lineup and is averaging 11.7 ppg. He is shooting 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from three-point range in his last four contests and is averaging 15.0 ppg during this stretch. In Williams first two games of his hot streak, registered a career-high point total in back-to-back contests 17 points vs. Detroit (Nov. 25) and 19 at Oakland (Nov. 29). Williams was the Rockets top point producer off the bench last year with 6.7 ppg in 17.5 mpg and scored his conference season-high of 14 points at Ohio (Feb. 1). He tied for the team lead in scoring with 13 points at Eastern Michigan (Feb. 15) and tallied 12 points in UT s rematches with both Ohio (Feb. 12) and EMU (March 8). Williams sank 31 of his last 35 free-throw attempts (88.6 percent) and ranked third on the team with an 82.5 FT% (47-of-57). In MAC play, he ranked second on the team with an 86.4 FT% (19-of-22). Lauf ranked fourth on the team with 52 offensive rebounds and averaged 3.8 ppg and 3.5 rpg in 14.6 mpg last year. He tied his career high with 12 points against Chicago State (Dec. 6) and ranks seventh in the MAC with a team-best 1.6 spg. Lauf also has a team-best 14 offensive rebounds and ranks fourth on the team with 4.1 rpg. Garber played 10.2 minutes per game last year while scoring 1.8 ppg and hauling down 1.9 rpg. He scored eight points and grabbed five boards vs. Kent State (Jan. 26) and blocked a career-high two shots in 19 minutes at Ball State (Feb. 8). Garber is averaging 2.3 ppg and 3.3 rpg this season, highlighted by a career-best six boards vs. Northern Arizona (Nov. 16) and Oakland (Nov. 29). Freshman G Stuckey Mosley also has provided significant contributions for UT off the bench, averaging 3.5 ppg and 1.1 rpg in 13.6 mpg. He tallied a season-high 10 points vs. Chicago State (Dec. 6) as well as nine points at No. 15 VCU (Nov. 18). Freshman G Kurt Hall has emerged as a solid contributor as well and is averaging 3.7 ppg and 1.4 rpg with a 70.0 FG% (7-of-10) and 92.3 FT% (12-of-13) in 6.9 mpg. Hall scored a season-high eight points vs. Chicago State (Dec. 6) and is averaging 5.3 ppg and 2.3 rpg in his last three games. ROCKETS GARNERING SOME NATIONAL EXPOSURE Toledo participated in the ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon for the first time ever this season. The Rockets faced No. 15 VCU at the Siegel Center in Richmond, VA on Nov. 18 on ESPNU. It was the first time the Rockets were selected for the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. TOLEDO TABBED TO BE AMONG NATION S TOP 50 TEAMS IN 2014-15 Following its record-breaking 27 victories in 2013-14, the Toledo men s basketball program received some national attention last spring. ESPN s Jeff Goodman included the Rockets in his Fab 50 for 2014-15. He wrote this about Toledo, Tod Kowalczyk brings back just about everyone except for (Rian) Pearson. Juice Brown is the star, but he has help from (Justin) Drummond, (J.D.) Weatherspoon and there s also size up front with (Nathan) Boothe. Goodman also identifies a Key Riser for each team and for the Rockets he tabs Jonathan Williams and write, Look for the freshman guard to slide into the starting lineup and replace Pearson. Williams should become one of the team s leading scorers. ROCKETS ADDING TALENTED QUARTET FOR 2015-16 CAMPAIGN Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced today the signing of 6-9, 210-pound forward Taylor Adway (Hazel Crest, IL), 6-11, 210-pound forward/center Luke Knapke (Minster, OH), 6-4, 195-pound guard Jaelan Sanford (Evansville, IN) and 6-3, 200-pound guard Chandler White (Fort Wayne, IN) to National Letter of Intents to attend the University of Toledo beginning in the 2015-16 academic year. Our 2015-16 recruiting class is very important for the future of our program, Kowalczyk said. We have three really good seniors on this year s team, and we felt we needed to bring in guys we thought were capable of giving us some pretty good minutes right away. I think we addressed a lot of needs. We needed to bring in a point guard as well as another perimeter player and a couple of post players as well. I feel really good about all four guys, because they re all very good studentathletes who fit our program s culture. Adway, who attends the same high school as Rocket senior guard Julius Brown, averaged 16.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 blocks per game for Hillcrest High School to earn South Suburban League Most Valuable Player honors. Taylor is a long, athletic, skilled 4 man who I think has a tremendous amount of potential, Kowalczyk said. He s a guy that s multi-dimensional. He can step out and shoot, play off the dribble and score with his back to the basket. Knapke averaged 14.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a junior to help Marion Local to a 20-5 win-loss mark. He earned first-team all-league, second-team all-district and honorablemention all-state accolades for his efforts. Luke is a skilled post player who is athletic and can step outside the three-point line, Kowalczyk said. I think the best part about Luke is that he possesses a tremendous feel for the game and is a very good passer. He obviously needs to gain some weight, but he has a chance to develop into a very good player. Sanford averaged 17.0 points per game as a junior en route to earning honorable mention all-state honors at Reitz High School. Jaelan is a point guard who is long, athletic and can really score, Kowalczyk said. I really like to have point guards that can score, and he reminds me a lot of (former Marquette standout) Travis Diener. He s just a tough-minded, basketball junkie. An honorable-mention all-state honoree, White averaged 15.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as a junior and surpassed the 1,000 career point mark as well. He also was a member of the Indiana Elite AAU team that won the Adidas Super 64 championship last summer. Chandler is an extremely physical combo guard who possesses a high basketball IQ, Kowlaczyk said. He can really defend, knows how to play and is developing into a more consistent shooter. PERFORMING WELL ON AND OFF THE COURT Toledo garnered the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award last year. The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes NCAA and NAIA men s basketball teams that earned a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better throughout the 2013-14 academic year. Of the 131 teams to make the list, only 30 were NCAA Division I-affiliated programs. The Rockets posted a 3.030 GPA during the Fall 2013 semester and a 3.053 mark in the Spring 2014 semester. UT was the lone Mid-American Conference school to be included in the listing. The victory extended the Rockets homecourt winning to streak to 17 games, the longest by a UT squad in the 39- year history of Savage Arena. Boothe knocked down 7-of-9 shots, including a three-pointer, and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. He also tied J.D. Weatherspoon and Zach Garber for the team lead with six rebounds. Joining Boothe in double figures were Justin Drummond (12 pts.) and Julius Brown (10 pts.). Brown also dished out a teamhigh eight assists with Jonathan Williams contributing nine points and a career-best six helpers. The entire Rockets starting lineup scored in double digits but that wasn t enough to offset Howard s heroics. J.D. Weatherspoon tied his career best with 20 points, and Jonathan Williams recorded a career-high 17 points.
