Marching Band Member/Parent Contract & Handbook 2018-2019 Attendance All rehearsals, games and competitions are MANDATORY o Excused absences and tardies include: Death in the family, severe illness (fever, stomach, flu, etc ), school events and immediate family weddings o Unexcused absences and tardies include: Doctor/Dentist appointments, grades, studying for a test and common colds (non-contagious sickness) Unexcused absences and tardiness will not be tolerated and will ultimately lead to dismissal from the 2018 Marching Band Program (Guard, Drumline or Winds) Unexcused Tardies/Absences will result in the following consequences o 1 Rehearsal Tardy verbal warning o 2 Rehearsal Tardies = 1 unexcused absence o 1 Unexcused Rehearsal Absence 1 performance suspension (you will not be allowed to travel or perform) (especially Wed. night or Sat. rehearsals) o 3 Unexcused Rehearsal Absences Dismissal from the WiHi Marching Band o 1 Unexcused Band Camp Rehearsal Absence Immediate Dismissal from WiHi Marching Band o 1 Unexcused Football Game or Competition Absence Immediate dismissal from the WiHi Marching Band Games Call times are when rehearsals/performances begin. Do not tell you ride that you need to arrive at the start time, ARRIVE BEFORE rehearsal starts time There is only WATER allowed in the stands at all games NO food or candy 3 rd Quarter Break you must be in stands and ready to play when clock hits 2:00 minutes left in 3 rd quarter; failure to do so counts as 1 Rehearsal Tardy Everyone is required to participate in the cheering of the team. We re there to support and encourage and be POSITIVE representatives of the school. No reading, homework or cell phones will be allowed in the stands at any time. Only WiHi Band gear is to be worn in the stands during games (exception is Lettermen jackets or attire previously APPROVED by Mr. Pages) 1 wihibands.weebly.com mpages@wcboe.org

Rehearsals All members are to report to the designated place (Band Room or practice field) by 6:30 on Wednesday Nights and 9:00am on Saturday Mornings Failure to do so will result in tardies, ultimately leading to dismissal from the program All members are to have the following items for EVERY rehearsal Dot book Pencil Equipment/instrument/music Water Jug (LARGE enough to get through an entire rehearsal block) o You will not be allowed to go to Bandroom to grab water/snacks (bring a cooler if need be) Gloves (guard) Appropriate rehearsal attire (school dress code applies). o No tank tops, spaghetti strap tops Attire All members of Color Guard are to wear form fitting clothes to rehearsals o NO jeans o NO oversized shirts o NO basketball shorts All members of the Percussion, Brass & Woodwinds should wear appropriate clothings for physical activity o NO jeans All members are to wear athletic shoes. (Guard may wear dance shoes) o NO flip flops o NO flats o YOU MUST WEAR SOCKS!!!!! Uniforms Band Uniforms parts (jacket, bibbers) are always zipped with shoulder straps up on or not at all. Do not walk around with your uniform half on/off. o Mr. Pages will approve when band jackets can be removed o Band Uniforms will remain at the school for storage. The care and maintenance of the Guard uniform is the members responsibility. o Uniforms are ALWAYS to be hand washed and NEVER machine washed and line dried. o Guard uniforms will be returned at the end of the season after being dry cleaned following the final performance. Competitions The Band will have a FULL ENSEMBLE rehearsal prior to departing time, so plan for 9:00am rehearsals before every competition 2 wihibands.weebly.com mpages@wcboe.org

Sunglasses/Glasses Sunglasses are permitted ONLY during the setting of drill during Band rehearsals. Guard members may not use sunglasses when spinning is involved. Sunglasses must be black or WiHi Blue, WiHi Gold and must not have reflective lenses (i.e. mirrored) Equipment & Maintenance The maintenance and care of Band equipment/instruments is incredibly important. Equipment/instruments must be stored, transported and cared for correctly. Equipment should never be lent out, left out or unattended for any reason. -Only Color Guard members are permitted to practice with their assigned equipment. -Only Percussion members are permitted to practice on their assigned instruments. -Only Wind players are permitted to practice on their assigned instruments (for school owned equipment/instruments). -No member should ever allow another person to use/spin their equipment nor should any member try to play or use the equipment of another (especially school owned instruments/equipment). o These are expensive investments and must last. Hair, Make-up & Accessories -For rehearsals and performances, hair must be pulled back out of the face and look presentable. Guard will have predetermined hair styles for performances. -For your safety, most jewelry is not permitted. Stud earrings are allowed. FOR GUARD each member will be required to wear make-up, earrings and any other accessory for the current season. For everyone please remember that some students may have allergic reactions and therefore, cologne, perfumes and body scent should be applied AWAY from the group and never overdone. This can ruin the uniform and set off someone s allergic reactions. Summer Rehearsal/Band Camp -All members are required to attend Band Camp (see website for dates and times) -All members are required to attend summer rehearsals/conditioning. If you have preplanned events, please note that on your contract when you return it. -One unexcused day of band camp rehearsal will result in immediate removal from the band Summer vacations should be taken during June and July. When camps begin, your attention and presence is necessary for the group s success and safety! Dedication to Build the WiHi Band Program As a member of the Band Program, you should plan to participate completely the entire year. While some students may not participate in second semester activities due to grades or other factors, it is understood that participating in another group that competes with building and maintaining the WiHi Band Program will result in your dismissal from the program and forfeit any future participation in Band sponsored extra-curricular activities and awards. Respect, Responsibility, and Integrity As a member of the Band Program, you must display a positive attitude and be respectful to EVERYONE at all times. This includes, but not limited to: the entirety of rehearsals, the entirety of competition trips, staff members, band parents, other students, etc. You are one of the few students who will ever wear a WiHi uniform, and as a member, you must treat the uniform with respect. When in uniform, you no longer represent yourself; you represent Wicomico High, its students, faculty, administration, and the Board of Education. Any infringement (i.e. disrespect or lack of integrity) will result in a suspension from performances (including trips) and/or dismissal from the band. Grounds for AUTOMATIC DISMISSAL Possession or use of illegal drugs (improper use of prescription drugs), alcoholic beverages, and tobacco of any form. Suspension from school for violations of school discipline policy. Immoral conduct: i.e. excessive display of affection, lying Unbecoming behavior that reflects on the reputation of the Band and or the school. Failure to attend games, competitions, performances and rehearsals without proper notification to Band Director or instructors. If there are ongoing discipline problems which violate the rules of the Band Program GPA falls below a 2.0 Refusal to comply with the instructions, or blatant disrespect of Band Director, instructors or parent chaperone/volunteers These expectations are the same as found in the Handbook. By signing this contract, you agree that you have read and will abide by the policies in the Band Handbook and this contract. Complete and return the next page by the date indicated.
