Contact: Lea Williams Fri.-Sat., Mar. 20-21 --- at UC Irvine Invitational, Utah State s outdoor track & field teams will compete in the UC Irvine hosted Spring Break Invite on Friday and Saturday, March 20-21. NTS --- at NCAA Indoor Championships, Fayetteville, Ark. Utah State seniors Nic Bowens and Chari Hawkins both earned second-team All-American honors last weekend at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Bowens garnered second-team All-American honors in the 200m after placing 10th in the semifinals with a time of 20.94. Hawkins also earned second-team All-American honors after placing ninth in the pentathlon with 4,164 points. In all, Hawkins placed ninth in the 60m hurdles (8.48), fifth in the high jump (1.77m 5-09.75), 13th in the shot put (11.52m/37-09.50), 11th in the long jump (5.89m/19-04.00) and 12th in the 800m with a personalbest time of 2:24.98. Overall, Hawkins has earned second-team All- American accolades a total of four times in her career, twice at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon and now twice at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon. Contact: Sean O Sullivan Wed., Mar. 18 --- at Utah, 5 p.m. Utah State women s tennis (10-5, 0-0) continues its 2015 spring season this week with a road match at Utah on Wednesday, March 18 at 5 p.m. L, 3-4 --- LOYOLA MARYMOUNT L, 2-5 --- OREGON Utah State lost both of its matches last week with a 4-3 home loss to Loyola Marymount and a 5-2 home loss to No. 67 Oregon. Against the Lions, senior McKenzie Davis won at No. 1 singles (6-1, 4-1, retired) and freshman Maggie O Meara won at No. 5 singles (6-2, 7-6 (8-6)). USU also won the doubles point as junior Kallie Sperry and sophomore Lexi Turley notched a 6-2 win at the first position, while Davis and O Meara recorded a 6-3 win at the second position. Against the Ducks, Davis won in three sets at No. 1 singles (4-6, 6-2, 10-0) and Lyall won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-3, 6-1). USU also posted a 6-0 win at the third doubles position with sophomore Nini Guensler and freshman Sabrina Demerath. SOFTBALL... The two teams will play single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March. 20-22 at 3 p.m., 1 p.m., and Noon, respectively. at San Diego Classic II W, 8-1 --- vs. Santa Clara L, 3-16 (5) --- vs. Long Beach State L, 5-6 --- vs. Baylor W, 1-0 --- vs. Harvard Junior pitcher Noelle Johnson helped Utah State to a 2-2 record at the San Diego Classic II last weekend with an 8-1 win against Santa Clara, a 16-3 loss to Long Beach State, a 6-5 loss to Baylor and a 1-0 win against Harvard. Johnson began the week by pitching a complete game six-hitter against the Broncos as she allowed just one earned run, while striking out eight batters. Offensively, Johnson was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and one RBI. Against the Bears, Johnson pitched 6.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out four batters and walking three. Offensively, Johnson was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and one RBI. And against the Crimson, Johnson recorded her first shutout of the season as she allowed seven hits over 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and two walks. For the week, Johnson pitched three complete games and posted a 1.40 ERA over 20.0 innings as she allowed four earned runs on 23 hits, while recording 16 strikeouts and issuing five walks. Offensively, Johnson batted.444 (4-9) during the tournament with two RBI, one run scored and one double. MEN S TENNIS... Contact: Sean O Sullivan Fri., Mar. 20 --- SAN FRANCISCO, 11 a.m. Utah State men s tennis (14-5, 2-0) continues its 2015 spring season this week with a home match against No. 50 San Francisco on Friday, March 20 at 11 a.m. W, 4-1 --- at Fresno State W, 4-2 --- at Pacific L, 0-4 --- vs. No. 56 Oregon, Boise, Idaho Utah State posted a 2-1 road record last week with a 4-1 Mountain West win at Fresno State, followed by a 4-2 win at Pacific before losing to No. 56 Oregon, 4-0, in Boise, Idaho. Against the Bulldogs, USU lost the doubles point, but senior Matt Sweet and sophomore Karan Salwan won their doubles match at the first position (6-3). In singles, sophomore Dennis Baumgartner won at the No. 1 spot (6-4, 6-1), sophomore Jack Swindells won at the No. 2 spot (6-3, 6-2), freshman Jaime Barajas won at the No. 5 spot (5-7, 6-2, 6-1) and freshman Andrew Nakajima won at the No. 6 spot (6-2, 3-6, 6-2). Against the Tigers, USU lost the doubles point and left the third match unfinished. In singles, Baumgartner won at the No. 1 spot (6-3, 6-2), Salwan won at the No. 3 spot (6-4, 4-6, 6-2), senior Marcus Fritz won at the No. 4 spot (6-1, 7-5) and Barajas won at the No. 5 spot (6-3, 6-3). Contact: Sean O Sullivan Sat., Mar. 21 --- at Mountain Rim Champs., Denver, Colo., 6 p.m. Utah State gymnastics (9-8, 2-7) continues its 2015 season this weekend as it travels to Denver, Colo., to compete in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championships. L, 196.350-196.375 --- BYU W, 196.325-196.000 --- at Sacramento State Utah State posted a 1-1 dual record last week with a 196.375-196.350 home loss to BYU and a 196.325-196.000 road win at Sacramento State. Against the Cougars, USU posted the third-best score in school history aided by a 49.225 vault score, good for third on the school s single-meet record list. In all, the Aggies posted at least a 49.000 on three events for the first time this season. USU s 196.350 team score was made up of a 49.225 on vault, a 48.800 on bars, a 49.050 on beam and a 49.275 on floor. BYU scored a 49.175 on vault, a 48.950 on bars, a 49.025 on beam and a 49.225 on floor. In the all-around, senior Sarah Landes scored a 39.250 (vault: 9.850, bars: 9.725, beam: 9.800, floor: 9.875) to tie for second with junior teammate McKinzey Martinez (vault: 9.850, bars: 9.775, beam: 9.800, floor: 9.825). USU started the meet on vault as sophomore Bailey McIntire scored a career-high 9.875 to tie for second, while Landes and Martinez both earned a 9.850 to tie for fourth. On bars, junior JoAnna Cuba paced the Aggies with a 9.800 to tie for second. McIntire and Martinez were just behind Cuba, tying for fourth-place with a 9.775. On beam, sophomore Charly Belliston and redshirt sophomore Hayley Sanzotti both put up a 9.825, tying Belliston s career-high, to tie for third-place. On floor, Sanzotti, McIntire and Landes all tied for second with a 9.875 as Sanzotti set a new career-high, while Landes tied her own career-high. Against Sacramento State, USU recorded the fourth-best team score (196.325) in school history with a 49.025 on vault, a 49.125 on bars, a 49.075 on beam and a 49.100 on floor. Sacramento State scored a 49.075 on vault, a 48.775 on bars, a 49.125 on beam and a 49.025 on floor. In the all-around, Landes took the top honors with a 39.250 (vault: 9.750, bars: 9.825, beam: 9.850, floor: 9.825), tying her season-high, while Martinez grabbed a 39.125 (vault: 9.800, bars: 9.675, beam: 9.825, floor: 9.825) to take fourth. On bars, Cuba and redshirt freshman Keri Peel led the way for the Aggies, as they both earned a 9.850 to tie for first-place. Just behind the pair was McIntire and Landes, who both grabbed a 9.825 to fie for second as the Aggies swept the top four spots. On vault, junior Miranda Kerr paced USU with a 9.850 to tie for second, while junior Michelle Yasukochi landed a 9.825 to tie for fifth. On floor, McIntire led the charge for the Aggies with a 9.875 to take the event title. Just behind McIntire, Landes and Martinez both recorded a 9.825 to tie for thirdplace. On beam, Cuba tied for first on the event with a career-high 9.875 to lead the Aggies. Landes tied for third with a 9.850, while Martinez tied for fifth with a 9.825. MEN S GOLF... Contact: Doug Hoffman (435) 797-3714 Next Competition Mon.-Tues., Mar. 23-24 --- at Cal Poly Match Play, Utah State s men s golf team will continue its 2015 spring season on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 23-24 at the Cal Poly Match Play Tournament held at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif. Last Competition 5th/13 --- at Southern Utah Invitational Utah State placed fifth as a team with an even par 576 (284-292) at the Southern Utah hosted Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational held in St. George, Utah last week. For USU, its fifth-place finish marks the third time in six tournaments this year it has recorded a top-five placing and USU has now finished in the top 10 of every tournament it has competed in this season. Senior Grahm Schmaltz concluded his bestever collegiate tournament with a 7-under 137 (69-68) to finish second individually. Schmaltz tied his collegiate-low round with a 4-under 68 during his final 18 holes and posted his best-ever tournament finish with his second-place showing, bettering his 11th-place finish at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational last fall. Schmaltz, who had a pair of rounds in the 60s during the tournament, entered the tournament with just two career rounds under 70. Joining Schmaltz on the leaderboard for USU was junior Seokwon Jeon who tied for 24thplace with a 2-over 146 (73-73) and sophomore McCoy Willey who also tied for 24th-place with a 2-over 146 (67-79). Willey began the tournament with a collegiate-low 5-under 67 during his first 18 holes. Other Aggies who competed in the tournament include senior Zach Waxler who tied for 42nd-place with a 5-over 149 (77-72) and junior Brennan Coburn who tied for 70th-place with a 13-over 157 (75-82). Sophomore Eli Rogers also competed for USU as an individual and tied for 42nd-place with a 5-over 149 (77-72). MEN S BASKETBALL... L, 65-67 --- vs. Wyoming Utah State men s basketball (18-13, 11-7) concluded its 2014-15 season with a 67-65 loss to fourth-seeded Wyoming in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Mountain West Tournament held in Las Vegas, Nev. Sophomore wing Jalen Moore led USU with 17 points, while redshirt freshman forward David Collette had 11 points and junior guard Chris Smith and freshman guard Julion Pearre each scored 10 points. USU finished the game shooting 44.2 percent (23-52), including 41.7 percent from three-point range (10-24) and 69.2 percent at the free throw line (9-13). UW shot 48.1 percent (26-54), including 29.4 percent from behind the arc (5-17) and 66.7 percent at the charity stripe (10-15). WOMEN S BASKETBALL... L, 85-99 --- vs. San José State Utah State women s basketball (8-23, 5-13) concluded its 2014-15 season with a 99-85 loss to eighth-seeded San José State in the opening round of the 2015 Mountain West Tournament held in Las Vegas, Nev. Freshman guard Funda Nakkasoglu led USU with 26 points, while freshman guard Tilar Clark had 16 points, junior forward Tijana Djukic scored 12 points and senior guard Elise Nelson had 10 points. USU finished the game shooting 43.8 percent (28-64), including 16.7 percent from three-point range (3-18) and 96.3 percent at the free throw line (26-27) as Nakkasoglu tied the Mountain West Tournament singlegame record for both free throws made (14) and free throw percentage (1.000) as she was a perfect 14-of-14 at the line. SJSU shot 43.4 percent (36-83), including 40.0 percent from behind the arc (14-35) and 81.3 percent at the charity stripe (13-16).
