January 16, 2019 TO: Athletic Directors FROM: Tim O Malley, Executive Director SUBJECT: 2019 WPIAL Girls Gymnastics Team Championship Friday, February 15, 2019 2019 WPIAL Girls Gymnastics Individual Championship - Saturday, February 16, 2019 The 2018 WPIAL girls TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP will be held on Friday, February 15, 2019, at Moon High School beginning at 7:00 PM. The following items will explain all areas of the tournament. However, if further clarification is necessary, please contact the WPIAL office. 1) An entry blank for team competitors is enclosed. This entry form must be postmarked by Monday, February 11, 2019, and returned to Amy Caprino at Moon Area School District. (Email submissions accepted at amycaprino@yahoo.com) 2) The top three teams in each section as determined by the section record will qualify into the team competition. (Any ties in section record will be broken by the head to head meet result). Your section record will also determine your competition order at the championship event. 3) A team entry form is attached for the 6 schools who qualified in the 2018/2019 WPIAL schedule. Please follow the directions on this form. 4) All coaches MUST wear warm-ups and gym shoes. The coaches/athletes attire must have no visible advertising of private clubs. 5) Food will be available at the site. Please do not bring in outside vendor food. 6) All competitors must be accompanied by a professional employee of the school district, or a designated coach representing the school (in writing), who must remain at the tournament site until the competitor has been eliminated. 7) No protests will be considered. No medical waivers for injuries or illnesses will be accepted. 8) ADMISSION: GATE SALE ONLY $8.00 Adults $5.00 Students 9) All floor exercise music MUST be recorded on a quality CD and/or Ipod connection. All music will be played on one amplification system provided by the host school. Use of any other system will be prohibited. 10) Long sleeved tee shirts and hooded sweat shirts will be available at a cost of $20 for tees and $30 for hoodies. 14) A team trophy will be presented at the completion of the session. 15) WPIAL MEDIA POLICY REGARDING POST-GAME INTERVIEWS The WPIAL Board of Directors, in an attempt to ensure proper supervision after a contest and provide all coaches and student-athletes the opportunity to reflect on their team s performance and game outcome, is requesting the cooperation of ALL MEDIA to delay ALL INTERACTION with coaches and student-athletes immediately following the conclusion of all playoff contests. In venues where it is possible, a designated media area, as established by the WPIAL appointed Game Manager, will be provided for the purpose of post-game interviews in a more controlled environment. Where designated areas are not available the WPIAL Board is requesting that ALL INTERVIEWS ARE DELAYED for a minimum of fifteen (15) minutes following the conclusion of the event. For this procedure to be effective, all coaches and media are asked to respect (observe) this request. The intent of this request is to allow for a cooling off and reflection period for coaches and student-athletes prior to addressing the media and to provide the media with more meaningful (objective) comments by coaches and student-athletes related to the contest. The WPIAL Board of Directors appreciates everyone s cooperation with this request (procedure). 1

The 2019 WPIAL girls INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Moon High School beginning at 10:00 AM. The following items will explain all areas of the tournament. However, if further clarification is necessary, please contact the WPIAL office. 1) An entry blank for individual contestants is enclosed. This entry form must be postmarked by Monday, February 11, 2019, and returned to Amy Caprino at Moon Area School District. (Email submissions accepted at: amycaprino@yahoo.com) All gymnasts may enter the WPIAL tournament if they have achieved the qualifying standard in their event(s). 2) For those WPIAL schools who do not field a gymnastics team; but have an individual or individuals who wish to compete and meet all PIAA eligibility requirements, you may only enter one individual per event. If your school does not field a gymnastics team, but you have a gymnast who wishes to compete and she has demonstrated in four (4) meets that she is capable of meeting the WPIAL standard for entry in her event, please forward her name and qualifying marks, attested by an official, to Amy Caprino at Moon Area School District by Monday, February 11, 2019. A minimum of 50% of individuals gymnasts qualifying scores must be obtained at a high school team hosted meet. 3) A draw for group rotation will be held at Moon High School gym on February 15th at 4:30 PM prior to the team competition. The coaches in attendance will draw. There will be NO changes made in a gymnast division or order prior to competition on Saturday. 4) The qualifying standards for all individuals who wish to enter the WPIAL championship event are as follows: a) There must be a minimum of four (4) scores from PIAA officiated meets, tournaments or invitationals. b) Average the event median score (middle score) with the season high score on that event to establish your qualifying score. c) All-Around ~ Total your four event averages for your qualifying score. Each event must attain the division minimum. Otherwise, use specialist average of remaining events. Do not use all around scores. d) Specialists ~ After averaging individual events, the events will be averaged together to determine the division. e) Any gymnast who wins the all around with a score that exceeds their current division must move up into that division for any following years of competition. f) Any gymnast who registers and/or competes level 9 or above USAG must register advanced. g) No gymnast may move down a division once they have competed in that division at a district or state level meet. NOTE: A gymnast may compete in one division only. No mixed divisions. There will be a brief touch beginning with the second competition rotation. All coaches MUST wear warm-ups and gym shoes - this is a high school event there will be no visible advertising of private club on athlete or coach. Athletes MUST be present and in school uniform to accept awards.
