The Midshipmen lead the series, which started in 1928, 11-2. Duke bested Navy last season by criteria after finishing the 10 matches all square at 22-22. It was the first victory for the Blue Devils over the Mids since the first win in 1928. LAST TIME OUT Duke suffered its first setback of the 2018-19 campaign, falling to Brown 24-15 last Saturday in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Brown picked up wins in two of the final three bouts to ice the victory. Duke, forfeiting at 133 pounds, fell behind 9-0 after the first two matches, before pulling within one at 9-8 after consecutive victories from Josh Finesilver and Mitch Finesilver. Victories from the Bears at 157 and 165 allowed them to pull away en route to the road win. LAST TIMES WE MET Since renewing the rivalry in 2017, the bouts between Duke and Navy have been nothing short of heart-stopping as both were decided by criteria. In 2017, the Midshipmen edged the Blue Devils in criteria as Navy s heavyweight just barely escaped a pin against Jacob Kasper. Last season, Duke won in criteria after Jacob Kapser exacted revenge with a pin with 30 seconds left in the final match of the day. Thayer Atkins also posted a fall allowing Duke to win on criteria based on the two falls. TOP DUAL SCORERS After three duals, the trio of sophomore Josh Finesilver is Matt Finesilver (174) and Mitch Finesilver (149) have scored 13 points to lead the Blue Devils. They are the only three Blue Devils to remain undefeated in dual action. LOOKING AT DUKE Duke opens a three-match road swing at Navy Sunday. The Blue Devils are 2-1 in duals after falling to Brown last weekend. It owns wins over Gardner-Webb and Penn. The Blue Devils unfortunately are without a 133 pounder due to injuries. Sixth-ranked Mitch Finesilver paces the Blue Devils with a 19-3 overall record and was the runner-up at the Southern Scuffle. Matt Finesilver is ranked 17th and posted a fifth-place showing in Chattanooga. Zach Finesilver, after missing the early portion of the campaign to an off-season injury, is 2-1 in his duals and took fifth at the Southern Scuffle. Josh Finesilver (141) remains undefeated in duals and is 15-6 overall. At 157 pounds, Benjamin Anderson made some noise in Chattanooga, placing eighth at the Southern Scuffle. He upset the No. 6 seed to start the tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual finalist Bo Pipher of Penn State. It was his first tournament in a Duke singlet. He is 4-3 overall on the year. At 184 pounds, Kaden Russell has taken big strides and is 13-8 on the year and took third at the Keystone Classic and just missed placing at the Southern Scuffle. ABOUT NAVY Navy has a busy Sunday as it wrestles EIWA foe Lehigh prior to the Duke match. The Midshipmen, 3-1 on the year, are coming off of a commanding 30-12 win over Hofstra. Their lone setback was a 28-9 loss to No. 2 Ohio State to start the year. All three of the victories have come by at least 15 points. Four Mids are ranked in the top 20 with 141-pound Nicholas Gil leading the way at No. 17 with a 19-5 overall record. Spencer Carey is 19th at 174 and owns a 17-8 mark, while Jared Prince is 10-7 and ranked 20th at 149. At the Southern Scuffle, Navy took 5th, edging Duke s 70 points with 75.5 points. Gil took third to pace the Mids and Prince finished seventh. Skidgel and 197-pound Joshua Roetman both took eighth. REMATCHES AND MATCHES TO WATCH Sunday s dual will feature a host of exciting matchups, including a rematch between Mitch Finesilver and Jared Prince. Mitch defeated Prince 7-3 at the Cliff Keen Invite and heads into the dual ranked sixth, while Prince is 20th. Josh Finesilver has a big test ahead of him when he takes on No. 17 Nicholas Gil. It will be Josh s third ranked opponent of the year, going 0-2 in the previous pair. At 174 pounds, No. 17 Matt Finesilver will wrestle No. 19 Spencer Carey as he goes for his first top 20 win of the season. DUKE S TREND UNDER LANHAM The Blue Devils have steadily improved in the six-plus years under head coach Glen Lanham. Duke has sent multiple qualifiers to the NCAA Championships for six straight seasons and had a program-record five in 2018. Prior to the 2016 season, Duke had never sent more than two wrestlers to NCAA Championships in consecutive seasons. This year was the first time in program history Duke wrestling opened a campaign ranked in the top 25 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Blue Devils were voted 24th in the poll. Duke finished 22nd last season at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish in program history. The Blue Devils have finished in the top 32 in the NCAA each of the past five seasons. Prior to the team s 29th-place finish in 2014, Duke had never finished higher than 35th and had never put together three consecutive top 35 finishes. Most recently Duke garnered its second consecutive top 10 finish at the Southern Scuffle with a seventh-place showing. The Blue Devils, after taking fifth last year, had never finished in the top 10 prior to Lanham. RUSSELL S SOPHOMORE SPIKE Sophomore 184-pounder Kaden Russell is poised for a breakout season for the Blue Devils. He already has 13 wins on the year after posting just seven last season. The Medina, Ohio native took third at the Keystone Classic and turned in a solid showing at the Cliff Keen Invitational. He most recently came up one win shy of placing at the Southern Scuffle. Three of his wins are by fall. JOSH FINESILVER FALLS Sophomore Josh Finesilver has taken his offense to a new level this season, recording six pins in his 21 matches. He only had one last season and five of the six this season have come in the first two periods. OH CAPTAINS MY CAPTAINS Seniors Mitch Finesilver, Zach Finesilver and Alec Schenk will lead the Blue Devils this season as captains. The trio are indisputed leaders both on and off the mat and their work ethic is second to none. Both Finesilvers are multiple-time NCAA qualifiers, while Schenk aims to garner a bid in his final season. FINESILVER FOUR Duke features an NCAA first with four brothers in the starting lineup. The quartet of Finesilver brothers, all of whom qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2018, wrestle for the Blue Devils, ranging from 141 to 174 pounds. Last season marked the first time in NCAA history one school has four brothers advance to the NCAA Championships. Josh and Matt Finesilver are twin brothers and earned the starting nod as rookies at 141 and 174, respectively. The older set of twins, Mitch and Zach, are redshirt seniors and wrestle at the respective 149 and 165 weights. Mitch is a threetime NCAA qualifier, while Zach has advanced twice. 2018-19 DUKE WRESTLING
