B1G PLAY IS HERE This season marks the first campaign for men s hockey as an official Big Ten sport. Ohio State is joined in the league by former Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals Michigan and Michigan State, Wisconsin and Minnesota, who both used to compete in the WCHA, and Penn State, which is in its second year as a varsity program. The teams will each play a 20-game conference schedule, taking on each opponent twice at home and twice on the road. All six teams will travel to Saint Paul, Minn., for the inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament March 20-22, 2014 in the Xcel Energy Center. Ohio State opened Big Ten play against Michigan Nov. 29/Dec. 2. The squad will close out the regular season with 18-consecutive Big Ten Conference games, beginning this week against Michigan State. HOME SWEET HOME Ohio State is 9-3-0 in Columbus this season, averaging 4.2 goals a game in Value City Arena, while allowing 2.5 an outing. Ryan Dzingel leads the team with nine goals and 20 points in VCA, while Nick Oddo is second with 14 points, sharing the assist lead with Tanner Fritz with 10 each. Fritz is third with 13 points in Columbus and Max McCormick is fourth with a 6-6-12 line. In all, 12 of the Buckeyes first 16 games this season were in Columbus. Overall, 14 of the first 18 will be played in Value City Arena. The squad has had just one night on the road (prior to the Big Ten opener at Michigan) and left the state for just two games - at Robert Morris and at Michigan. The other two road games were at Miami and at Bowling Green. The squad s first two-game road trip is Jan. 17-18 when it plays at Minnesota in its first two-game Big Ten series on the road. SPECIAL TEAMS Ohio State was 3-for-7 (.429) on the power play in its series vs. Mercyhurst and is now 17-for-79 (.215) this season, ranking second among Big Ten teams and 14th in the NCAA. McCormick and Szczechura have a league-best six power play assists, while Dzingel and Nick Schilkey are tied for fourth in the Big Ten with three power play goals each. Ohio State was assessed just one penalty in each game vs. Mercyhurst, facing two power plays in the series. ODDO ON THE PLUS SIDE Nick Oddo was named Big Ten Third Star of the Week after a league-high tying five points, with four assists, in the sweep of Mercyhurst. He had a career-high three assists in game one Dec. 28, marking the second three-point game of his career and the season (Oct. 25 vs. Robert Morris) and then had the gamewinning goal and an assist Dec. 29. Oddo leads Ohio State with a +13 rating, tying for fifth in the Big Ten and the only non-minnesota player in the Top 8. He is +1 or better in eight games this year. He is tied for 19th nationally in plus/minus rating. Oddo is fifth on the team and tied for 14th in the Big Ten with 14 points.
