Malton & Norton Junior Section e have two Newsletter July 2018 Roundup of results from the beginning of the season: Outside competitions and events Our low handicappers have been extremely busy this season with York Union and County and even England commitments. Josh Stead: As well as playing for the York Union in May Josh played for the Yorkshire boys U18 team having previously been in the U16 squad. He played against the Northern Counties at Blackwell Grange and managed to fight back from being 3 down to win 2&1 with some superb play on the second 9 holes Recently Josh played for Yorkshire first team against Lancashire and finished one down though the Yorkshire team managed to win overall. a well contested match, well done. Josh, Lewis Poppy & Beth all played in Scotland in the St Andrews Junior Open. Josh did amazingly well to finish 10th out of the 150 entries, sadly he fared less well in the knock out stages but a wonderful achievement nevertheless. He is currently having England coaching and was also first reserve for the Carris Trophy. The England U18 Championships at Fulford.. but sadly no-one dropped out to enable him to play but he had a fantastic experience caddying for his friend George, from Fulford, who made the cut so played all four rounds.. hopefully he will get to play next year. Both Beth Norton and Poppy Rudd were selected to play for the Yorkshire Ladies Second Team at Holylake against Cheshire and Poppy for the Girls team at Tankersley Park against Cheshire. On the 22nd July both played in the Yorkshire Girls Championships at Pontefract Golf Club. Anyone watching the girls play can only be impressed by the quality of golf they produce. In addition Beth has been receiving England coaching and played in the English Junior Girls Open at Fulford in May and in the England Schools National Championship in Norfolk in July. She finished third in the Rosebowl Competition which Poppy won. Beth played in the St. Andrews University Open competition over two days and finished in 8th place. In the Open Competition at St Andrews she was lucky enough to play the Old course and finished only two over on her gross score.. a truly superb standard of play. Beth s home club is The Oaks but we are really pleased to see her joining us at Malton whenever she is able.

Poppy Rudd: At the beginning of the year Poppy, whose handicap is now down to 6.2, was third reserve in the English Junior Open held at Fulford.. sadly no-one dropped out so she didn t get to play but spent the three days encouraging her friend Beth who did..next year! Poppy has had excellent results playing both for Yorkshire Ladies second team and the Junior first team. As well as her County commitments & winning the Fulford Rose Bowl with an amazing gross of 75 Poppy made her debut in the ladies scratch match recently against Brough and finished only two over gross when they shook hands on the 13th a super result winning 6 & 5 Poppy re-charging after a hard round Lewis Stead: Junior Captain Lewis waiting anxiously to see if our team score would be good enough to win the Team Championships at Pike Hills..which it was. This was the third year in a row that the Malton & Norton Junior Team won the York Area Clubs Championships and went through to the County Round.what an achievement! Lewis receives coaching from the York Union and plays for the York Union Team as well as being Junior Captain and being Captain of our Team in interclub league matches. In addition this year he won the Ken Machin Trophy and was runner up in the Alan Hague Trophy Division 1 being beaten by a countback on the last 6 holes Sean Burrows: Our newcomer Sean Burrows won the 1st Division of our Junior Open Day earlier in the year and was an important player in our team winning the York Area Team Championships. Sean would like to play in some of the Men s Competitions and is looking for any adults who would play with him any volunteers?

After playing in The York Alliance Team Championships and some County fixtures earlier in the year Christina Rumbellow is taking a little break from golf at the moment but we hope to see her back on the course in the not too distant future. Junior Club Championships: For the third year in a row the Malton & Norton Junior Team won the York Alliance Junior Team Championships with an excellent round of 41 from our new member, Sean Burrows, taking us 8 points ahead of our nearest rival Fulford This was the third year in a row that the juniors have won this York Union event, sadly despite playing really well they were disappointed not to repeat last year s achievement of winning the County round which was held at Hull Golf Club the picture alongside shows them with their last hold of the County Cup which sadly they were not able to retain..it was a very difficult ask with all of them being off such low handicaps. George Walker: What a season George has had.his handicap has tumbled down and he is now playing off 25.aged 8 George has played in two interclub matches and won on both occasions. He played against Fulford winning 6&5 and then more recently against Scarthingwell where he won on the 18th having been down all of the way round.an excellent fight back which was even more impressive as it was way past his normal bedtime! George also won The Jim Kay Cup (left) and Mr Captains Day Junior 18 hole competition (below left) before going off to Malaga with mum and dad to play more golf! George & Ben playing together in a Sunday Comp

Alfie Dacey: Alfie, almost the same age as George, has had an equally spectacular year though he is travelling further afield to play some of his golf. He has been very busy: He won: His age group in the European Junior Tour at Woollaton Park The Wee Wonders qualifier at Bryn Meadows scoring 46 The Wee Wonders qualifier at Woodsome Hall again scoring 46 The Malton & Norton Junior Open Day Division 2 scoring 44 points Alfie has done brilliantly in this year s National Wee Wonders golf Competition and after winning the Welsh Final of this competition at the Rhondda with 38 shots is now through to the National Final at St Andrews later this year. fantastic, well done. His most recent success is his win at an American Golf Competition in Cheshire winning with 46 points against many players considerably older than him and qualifying for the American Golf Junior British Championship at Guisborough at the end of August. well done again In addition to these Alfie has won four Peter Cowan Junior Tour Comps and had two second places and two third places. Alfie is also a loyal supporter of events at Malton and Norton playing in the Sunday Comps whenever he can. He also won the second division Competition at our Open Day earlier this year. He is now playing in some of the adult competitions off the white tees and in one rollup he scored 41 Stableford points! We had another player making his debut playing in matches against other clubs: Nate Pilgrim, shown here, who enjoyed himself playing at home against The York Club We hope to arrange at least two friendly fixtures against other clubs later in the year to give more of you opportunity to play in fixtures, some of them will be for those of you who are only playing 9 holes at the moment

Congratulations to the following Juniors who have worked hard to get sufficient cards in for a CONGU handicap: Callum Russell (25), Matthew Delaney (25), Josh Delaney (27), Nate Pilgrim (35), Matthew Saxby (40) Connor Saxby (43), Niamh Saxby (44), Georgina Dawson (47), Kacey Drabble (51) There are several others who just need one or two more cards and some like Gracie Wood and Oscar Russell who have just handed in their first card, well done...keep going! Junior Open Day: Our Open Day was such a success that we have decided to hold an End of Season Open Day this will be on Sunday 23rd September. anyone who would be interested in playing or helping should it be needed should contact Lesley Club Competitions so far: The Ken Machin Trophy: Division 1 and The Cup Lewis Stead Division 2 1st Ben Symington, runner up George Walker The John Clark Trophy: Division 1 winner Poppy Rudd, runner up Josh Stead Division 2 winner Joshua Delaney, runner up Matthew Saxby, third Alfie Dacey 9 Hole Competition Winner Georgina Dawson, runner up Niamh Saxby, third Kacey Drabble The Alan Hague Trophy: Division 1 won by Josh Stead, runner up Lewis Stead and third Poppy Rudd The Division 2 and 9 hole comp was postponed because of the adverse weather conditions on the day.. a good decision!..the new date is Sunday September 30th.. put it in your diary NOW! Fundraiser: Our Race night which was well supported by members buying horses, sponsoring races, making posters, loaning racing silks, transporting equipment and standing in for me in my absence made a profit of 371.70 and equally importantly it was fun as can be seen by the photos below.. I was very sorry to miss it and my thanks go to all of you who made it such a success. The Junior Notice-board:..is moving however we re not sure where.. once I know I ll let you know but for now just check your emails as that will be the ONLY way I will communicate with you New Paperwork:..sorry folks but to comply with new guidelines from England Golf we need to fill in some new forms including photograph consent forms if you still want to have pictures in the newsletter or emailed to you.
