San Jose won two out of three from the host Visalia Rawhide in their most recent series, including a 10-3 victory in the rubber game on Saturday. Gary Brown led a 13-hit offensive charge with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Brown hit a go-ahead three-run inside-the-park homer in the fourth inning while also finishing with four RBI s. Nick Liles contributed three hits and James Simmons added a two-run home run for the Giants. Jake Dunning was credited with the win after tossing a career-high six innings with three runs (all earned) allowed, no walks and five strikeouts. Balanced Team The Giants enter tonight s game ranked first in the California League in ERA (2.88) and second in batting average (.287). On the mound, San Jose has thrown a league-best four shutouts with the other nine teams in the league having combined for only six shutouts. The Giants have also issued the second-fewest walks (50) and allowed the secondfewest home runs (8). Offensively, San Jose is second in runs scored (6.6), second in stolen bases (30) and tied for fourth in home runs (16). Cavan s Power Surge Second baseman Ryan Cavan has recovered from his early-season slump with three home runs in the last six games. Over the last seven contests, Cavan is 12-for-28 (.429) with 15 RBI s. The Bay Area native endured a 1- for-28 slide over a seven-game span earlier this season. He s now tied with Chris Dominguez for the team lead in home runs (4) while ranking first in the California League in RBI s (20). Big Wins And Close Losses The Giants have lost their seven games this season by a total of just 10 runs. San Jose is 1-5 in one-run games and 0-1 in two-run games. By comparison, the Giants are 8-0 in games decided by four runs or more and have scored in double figures in six out of their 10 wins. Run Differential The Giants have outscored the opposition by a 113-55 margin over their first 17 games of the season. That +58 run differential is tops in the California League. The Bakersfield Blaze (+45) and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (+6) are the only other teams in the league that have outscored the opposition. Brown Extends Hitting Streak To 12 Games, Leads Baseball In Stolen Bases Center fielder Gary Brown has hit safely in 12 straight games and is batting at a.412 clip (21-for-51) during the streak. Brown was San Francisco s first round draft pick last June after setting the Cal State Fullerton single-season record for batting average (.438) en route to garnering First Team All-American honors. Brown has at least one hit in 16 out of his first 17 games this season. Additionally, his 15 stolen bases not only lead the California League but are tied for first (with former SJ Giant Emmanuel Burriss) in all of Minor League Baseball. Top Prospects Eight players on San Jose s roster are among the top 20 prospects in the organization according to Baseball America: Pitcher Zack Wheeler (#2), center fielder Gary Brown (#3), catcher Tommy Joseph (#10), right fielder Jarrett Parker (#12), pitcher Jose Casilla (#13), third baseman Chris Dominguez (#15), pitcher Heath Hembree (#19) and pitcher Jake Dunning (#20). Giants And Nuts Meet For First Time This series marks the first meeting of the season between the Giants and Nuts. The teams are scheduled to play each other 23 times this year, including 16 match-ups in the first half. San Jose swept Modesto three-games-to-none in the North Division Series last September en route to winning the California League title. There are five players (Jose Casilla, Hector Correa, Wendell Fairley, Kelvin Marte and James Simmons) currently on the Giants roster who were members of the club last postseason. First Half Success The Giants enter the 2011 season having won a California League record six consecutive First Half North Division titles (2005-10). First half division winners clinch a playoff berth and earn a first round bye. San Jose has qualified for the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons overall (2004-10). The Giants are attempting to become the first team in California League history to win three straight championships in 2011. Media Coverage Tonight s game can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com with Joe Ritzo calling all of the action. All 140 games this season will be aired on the club s official website. Today s Opponent: Modesto Nuts The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, enter tonight s game with a record of 7-10 four games out of the top spot in the North Division. Modesto is last in the California League in batting average (.248) and sixth in ERA (4.88). First baseman Mike Zuanich has hit four out of their six home runs this season in addition to leading the team with a.364 batting average. 2009 first round draft pick Tyler Matzek is slated to make the start on the mound tonight. Matzek is 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in his first three starts of the year.
