SOCIAL MEDIA Twitter/Snapchat/Instagram...@GamecockVolley Facebook... /GamecockVolleyball ON THE AIR NOTEWORTHY SCOUTING TEXAS A&M Texas A&M has not fallen far from its 2015 pace, when the Aggies captured the conference title with a 16-2 record. Entering Friday night s match, the team is 10-6 with a 4-1 SEC mark and is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 rankings, despite playing just two home matches for the season to date. Five starters and the libero return from last season, highlighted by 2015 SEC Player of the Year Stephanie Aiple and All-SEC members Ashlie Reasor and Jazzmin Babers. Bolstering the trio is outside hitter Kiara McGee, who leads the team in points and averages 3.18 kills per set so far this season, and freshman Hollann Hans (2.81 kills, 1.65 digs per set). On defense, the Aggies rank second in the conference in blocks per set (2.75) and are holding opponents to a.166 hitting percentage this season. LSU stands at 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the SEC, and will play Florida on Friday before facing the Gamecocks in Baton Rouge Sunday afternoon. Four different players average two kills or more per set, led by outside hitter Gina Tillis (3.19). Tillis is also a stout two-way player, putting up 2.97 digs and 0.44 blocks per set. The Tigers as a team are one of the best in the SEC at keeping the ball alive, with a team average of 15 digs per set that ranks second in the conference. An achilles heel for the team has been accuracy on offense; LSU ranks 12th in hitting percentage at.195, and has hit just.165 through its first six conference games. It was a seasonhigh for any Gamecock opponent, with the next closest being nine against UT-Martin. The last opponent to have 12 or more aces in a match was North Florida on Sept. 13, 2014. Mikayla Shields finished with 14 kills and a.522 hitting percentage against Georgia. She now has five matches this season with double-digit kills and a hitting percentage over.500. South Carolina hit just.030 as a team vs. Florida, its lowest of the season. Florida blocked 11 total attacks for the day, tied for the most by a Gamecock opponent this season. Florida entered the match as the nation s top hitting team, with a combined percentage of.336. The Gamecocks were able to hold the Gators to a.250 rate for the match Sunday. The starting lineup had a different look against the Gators, with Abreia Epps and Courtney Koehler getting the start in place of Aubrey Ezell and Jacqy Angermiller, and Joely Cabrera in for Megan Kirkland at libero. 15 players saw extended playing time for the Gamecocks against Florida, with Jesse Turner (two kills) and Courtney Furlong (four kills) playing most of the third set in the front row and Savannah Murray (two digs) stepping in to the back row. TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST The Gamecocks face one of the toughest conference schedules of any team in the SEC, with an 18-game slate that features two matches apiece against the top four teams in the conference - Florida, Kentucky, Missouri and Texas A&M. In the first month of the season, the Gamecocks eight scheduled opponents currently have a combined conference record of 30-15. No other team in the conference plays each of the top four twice this season. TV... SEC Network+ Play-by-Play... Casey Richardson Color Analyst... The team is out-hitting the opposition.302-.165, and have yet to lose this season when out-hitting opponents in a match (12-0). The opposition averages 1.23 aces per set, compared to 1.53 for Carolina. The Gamecocks are 8-0 when finishing a match with more aces. The Gamecocks average 2.61 blocks per set and have 34 solo blocks, compared to just 1.36 for opponents. Freshman Mikayla Shields hits.372 in wins, compared to.197 in losses. WHEN THE GAMECOCKS LOSE... The offense is hitting just.158 in losses with two fewer kills per set on average, and the defense is allowing opponents to hit.268. None of Carolina s four top attack leaders are hitting above.200 through the team s four losses. Serve reception has been the biggest x-factor in losses, as the Gamecocks are allowing two aces per set to opponents in the four matches, but only average 0.86 aces while holding serve. Though the team is actually averaging more blocks per set in losses than in wins (2.71 to 2.61), opponents average 2.07 blocks per set in Gamecock losses A FRESH PERSPECTIVE The team has received a big lift from a trio of freshman at key positions this season: Mikayla Shields leads the team with 2.95 kills per set, and his hitting an impressive.338 for the season despite hitting from the outside. So far this season, she has nine matches with double-digit kills and has hit over.500 seven times, and also earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors to go with tournament MVP recognition at the College of Charleston Invite and the Gamecock Invitational. Courtney Koehler has stepped in as a setter in the team s 6-2 offense and is averaging 4.41 assists and 1.44 digs per set while playing in every set so far this season, ending as the team s top assister in six matches. On top of her setting skills, she has been a clutch server, with 10 aces and the team s best serve percentage (seven errors in 217 attempts). Alicia Starr had to earn her spot in the starting lineup mid-season, after being trained at an entirely different position than she played in club and high school. In her eight matches since moving into a starting role, she is averaging 1.39 kills and 1.32 blocks per set and is hitting.432. She has already made her mark on the program record books as well, as her four solo blocks vs. Davidson are the second-most in the program s rally-scoring era (since 2001) and her 11 blocks vs. Kentucky are tied for the second-most in a four set match since 2001. ATHLETIC LINEAGE The 2016 Gamecocks have an athleticism that head coach Scott Swanson and his staff are excited about. It s no surprise, once you look at the team s family history. Many of the players have siblings, parents, and other family members who have competed at the Division I level in athletics, and some have gone on to have pro sports careers: COURTNEY FURLONG Mother swam at St. John s University Three cousins played in Division I for softball, diving and volleyball Uncle is Frank Viola, a MLB veteran, Cy Young winner, and three-time All-Star COURTNEY KOEHLER Her brother played football at Presbyterian College Older sister Kerstin played volleyball at College of Charleston NOTEWORTHY DESSAA LEGROS Her twin sister Annayka currently plays volleyball at Coastal Carolina EMMA LOCK Her uncle, Andy Lock, played football at Missouri. Against Tennessee, the team drew a crowd of 1,819 (second-most in program history). Of the top 10 home crowds on record, eight have come under head coach Scott Swanson and three have come this season alone. Currently, the Gamecocks rank 38th nationally in average attendance this season (1,185), despite the fact that two matches were rescheduled due to weather and three matches have gone directly against home football games. COLE NAMED TO GAMECOCKS HOF Current South Carolina assistant head coach Shonda Cole was revealed as a member of the nine-member South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2016. She becomes just the third woman from the program to make the Hall of Fame, joining Ashley Edlund-Heidtke (inducted in 2010) and Heather Larkin (inducted in 2012). Cole became the first Gamecock volleyball player to earn All-America honors, and was also a three-time All-SEC honoree. Cole still holds the program s career record for points per set, kills per set, and attacks. After an equally successful professional career, which included a stint with the national team, Cole has returned to her alma mater and is in her second season as an assistant. ALL-TIME RECORDS South Carolina holds a 780-604 (.564) all-time record, dating back to 1973. The Gamecocks joined the SEC for volleyball in 1991, and have an all-time conference record of 174-229 (.432) In matches in the Carolina Volleyball Center, Carolina 181-97 (.655). LSU (9/27/15) TEXAS A&M OUTLASTS CAROLINA IN FIVE-SET SHOWDOWN COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Gamecock volleyball team played one of its best matches of the season Sunday afternoon, but were unable to hold off Texas A&M and dropped a 3-2 decision (27-29, 25-23, 22-25, 25-12, 15-4). Dessaa Legros led Carolina (7-12, 0-6 SEC) with 20 kills, while the Aggies (10-6, 3-2 SEC) had 23 kills from Jazzmin Babers. 1st Set: The match had a flair for the dramatics from the very first set. Carolina busted out to a 12-5 lead to begin, behind a balanced attack of Legros, Sarah Blomgren and Koko Atoa-Williams. The lead would expand all the way up to 17-8 before Texas A&M made its comeback run. Facing the nine-point deficit, the Aggies reeled off an 11-4 run to trail just 21-19. It would come all the way back and tie the set at 24-all after a kill from Ashlie Reasor. They would ultimately serve for set point, holding a 27-26 lead on Carolina, but Jacqy Angermiller kept the team alive with a kill. Megan Kirkland would get an ace to set up set point, then Dessaa Legros put up a solo block to clinch the 29-27 win. 2nd Set: The second set would be even tighter, with Texas A&M earning the early advantage. The visitors would hold a 16-12 lead, but the duo of Legros and Angermiller combined for four kills in a run that would flip the score over to a 21-20 Carolina lead. A block from Darian Dozier and Blomgren would make it 22-20, but the Aggies used a trio of kills from Reasor to out-score the Gamecocks 5-1 down the stretch for the 25-23 final score and a 1-1 match. 3rd Set: A motivated home side would emerge from the halftime break and used tough service from Dozier to take an early lead. The senior would start her service with the team trailing 4-3, but when she was finished it would be a 7-0 run and a 10-4 lead. The lead would grow to eight, 16-8, after another Kirkland ace, and the Aggies burned their second timeout of the set. Texas A&M would make a late rally, going 8-0 to take a 20-11 Carolina advantage down to just 20-19. A kill from Blomgren broke the run, and the visitors would get no closer than two points the rest of the way in a 25-22 win for the Gamecocks. 4th Set: Behind the serve of Aubrey Ezell, the Garnet and Black took a 5-1 lead in the fourth set, looking to clinch the match. A 10-2 run by the Aggies swung the score back to their advantage and they would not look back. Carolina was unable to sustain the runs it needed to break A&M s momentum and the match would go to a fifth set after a 25-21 decision. 5th Set: Net defense would make all the difference in the final set. The Aggies forced an early timeout after earning a 5-1 lead, and never let Carolina get close than three points the rest of the way. To seal the win, they would record three blocks over the final seven plays of the set in the 15-4 win. TEXAS A&M OUTLASTS CAROLINA IN FIVE-SET SHOWDOWN BATON ROUGE, LA. - The South Carolina volleyball team closed its first weekend of SEC competition Sunday afternoon, losing at LSU 3-0. Attack errors held the Gamecocks (7-8, 0-2 SEC) back from holding onto key rallies, and the Tigers (5-8, 1-1) capitalized behind 14 kills from outside hitter Gina Tillis. Sarah Blomgren led Carolina with eight kills, it was just the second time all season that the team s leading attacker finished with single-digit kills. Darian Dozier added six kills and a team-leading.250 hitting percentage; the Gamecocks combined to hit.073 in the match. After struggling offensively in the first two sets, Carolina s best chance at working its way back into the match came in the third, when it took the early 12-7 lead. Of the six kills in that stretch, four different Gamecocks contributed. The home side would take back control on the heels of an 8-0 run for a 15-12 lead, and Carolina would get no closer than two points for the remainder of the set. KEY STAT The Gamecocks had just three blocks as a team in the match, which tied a season-low (tied with three vs. Wofford). LSU had nine blocks total. Carolina also committed 22 attack errors in the match. NOTABLE LSU now has won five straight in the series and 12 of 13. The Gamecocks have not won in Baton Rouge since 2003. Defensive specialist Emma Lock finished with a team-high 11 digs. It was the freshman s second double-digit dig game so far this season, behind only her 19 against Western Michigan (9/12). Freshman setter Aubrey Ezell finished with 11 digs and added 19 assists. It was her tenth doubledouble of the season, putting her on the cusp of entering the top 25 for most double-doubles in a single season. @GAMECOCKVOLLEY 4 2016 SOUTH CAROLINA VOLLEYBALL

SCOTT SWANSON Head Coach Sixth Year at South Carolina Third in program history for career wins Coached seven NCAA tournament teams (Arizona State 1999, 2000, Minnesota 2006-10) Part of staff that coached eight All-Americans Recruited three top-10 classes to Minnesota The 11th head coach in Gamecock Volleyball history, Scott Swanson has his sights set on a successful 2016 season as he enters year six in Columbia. The Gamecocks will bring an exciting balance of veterans and talented youngsters into the season, with the aim of building off 2015 s 13-18 campaign. The Gamecocks faced a season of different adversities in 2015, coming from untimely injuries and a roster featuring six freshmen who all were asked to fill important roles. The team bonded through the rigors of the season, and picked up impressive wins over Tennessee, Ole Miss, and a season sweep of Arkansas. Swanson moved into third in program history for wins in a career after winning his 72nd game at South Carolina on Oct. 25. Individually, freshman Aubrey Ezell finished with perhaps one of the best debut seasons ever by a Gamecock, finishing the season with the second-most assists ever in the program s rally-scoring era and a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. It would not just be the freshmen who would surprise, the team also saw breakout seasons from Dessaa Legros and Sarah Blomgren. Senior Darian Dozier capped her career in style, moving up to third in program history for career blocks and entered the top ten in hitting percentage as well. Off the court, the team volunteered over 1100 for community service, the most of any team at South Carolina. In 2014, the Gamecocks posted a 17-14 record, which included seven SEC wins, the program s most since 2008. Libero Mikaela Christiaansen set the program record for most digs in a single season with 535, while middle blocker Darian Dozier set single-season rally scoring era school records for total blocks (141) and block assists (127). The Gamecocks also turned in another strong year in the classroom, as a leaguebest 12 players made the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll. During the 2013 season, outside hitter Juliette Thévenin became just the second Gamecock in school history to earn AVCA All-America honors as she was named honorable mention All-American. Thévenin was also a first-team AVCA All-Southeast Region and All-SEC selection as she left the program ranked in the top 10 in six career categories. Swanson guided the Gamecocks to an 18-14 record in 2012, the program s second winning season in the last decade. South Carolina got off to a program-best 13-0 start and improved its hitting percentage for a second straight season, ranking second in the SEC with a percentage of.255, an improvement of 29 points from the previous year. Outside hitter Juliette Thévenin garnered second-team All-SEC honors after she ranked second in SEC play with 4.40 kills per set and 4.81 points per set, becoming the first Gamecock since 2008 to receive an All-SEC award. In Swanson s first season, the Gamecocks went 14-16 and improved its offensive efficiency and its backline defense under his guidance. The team led the SEC with a 16.78 digs average, the best mark in four years for the Gamecocks, and hit.226, a 45-point improvement from the 2011 season. Swanson s teams have also proved themselves in the classroom, earning the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14. In his first five seasons, 49 student-athletes have earned a spot on the SEC Academic honor roll, including eight of the nine eligible players from 2015. The team also claimed the department s Life Skills Team of the Year award in 2011-12, honoring the group for its academic achievements, personal development and work in the community. Prior to his current head coaching job, Swanson spent five years on the sidelines for the Golden Gophers, helping the team to five-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a 125-46 record. Three times, Minnesota finished second in the Big Ten behind perennial power Penn State. The 2009 team advanced to the national semifinals in the NCAA Tournament. During his tenure in Minneapolis, five Golden Gophers earned All-America accolades, including 2009 first-team middle blocker and 2012 US National Team pool member Lauren Gibbemeyer. Swanson also led the Gophers recruiting efforts, posting three top-10 recruiting classes according to PrepVolleyball.com. The 2009 group earned top honors from the outlet. In the summer of 2009, Swanson spent time with USA Volleyball s A-2 Junior National Team, and he coached the USA Red team to a second-place showing in the 2008 USA Adult Open Championships. Swanson brings in four years of head coaching experience to Columbia after his tenure at the University of Texas-El Paso. With a 50-61 career record, Swanson had the team on the brink of the NCAA Tournament in 2005, when the Miners went 21-10. Three player earned all-conference honors under Swanson s tutelage, including honorable mention All-American Kari Stacy. He also inked a high school All-American and saw his team improve in the classroom to a department-best 3.2 GPA in 2005. Prior to UTEP, Swanson spent six years at his alma mater, Arizona State. He helped the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances during his time in Tempe and coached one second-team All-American and two Pac-10 All-Freshman Team players. Two of his Sun Devil players garnered Academic All-America certificates as well. Swanson started his coaching career at Mountain View (Ariz.) High School, working as an assistant with the varsity team and leading his junior varsity group to a 17-1 record. As a head coach with the Arizona East Valley Juniors club, he led a 16-1s team to a national runner-up finish and earned Cactus Region Coach of the Year honors. He also served as head coach at Camelback High School before landing the job with Arizona State, where he also played club volleyball. A graduate of ASU, Swanson is married to the former Erin Meier. The couple has two daughters, Rylee Sue and Haylen Rae.
