It also marks the first time the teams have met as Big Ten foes at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium, as the teams squared off in Baltimore two years ago. In snowy conditions at Michigan State last weekend, the Terrapin defense allowed the Spartans to complete just 2-of-14 passes for 20 yards. It marked the fewest passing yards for an opponent since holding Ohio to 10 passing yards on Sept. 6, 1997, and the fewest completions since holding Georgia Tech to two on Nov. 3, 2012. The Maryland defense had held three consecutive opponents under 10 pass completions: at Rutgers (8), Michigan (9) and at Michigan State (2). The Terps have allowed just 272 passing yards during that span (90.7/g). The last time Maryland held three opponents in a season (not consecutive games) to less than 10 completions was 1996. Junior DJ Moore, who currently leads the Big Ten Conference with 72 receptions, needs six catches to break the singleseason Maryland record for receptions set in 1994 by Geroy Simon (77). Moore, who also leads the conference in TD catches (8) and reception yards (933), has remarkably caught a pass from four different quarterbacks this season due to injuries. Maryland is set to face its sixth opponent ranked in the Associated Press Top-25 this season (at the time of the game) - the most in a season for the Terps since 1992. The Terps have played the toughest schedule to date with its opponents posting a.667 win percentage (64-32 overall), and are on pace to play the toughest schedule in the country with its cumulative opposition currently posting a 73-34 record (.682). Head coach DJ Durkin and the Maryland football program will be honoring 19 seniors for its annual Senior Day this weekend. Among the seniors is middle linebacker Jermaine Carter, Jr., who is poised to become just the fifth player since 1969 to lead Maryland in tackles three straight seasons, joining Alex Wujciak (2008-10), D Qwell Jackson (2003-05), E.J. Henderson (2000-02), and Ratcliff Thomas (1993-95). 2017 STAT RANKS MD FBS CONF CONF. ON THE OFFENSE By The Numbers 1 3 4 4 7 8 10 11 31 Junior wide receiver Jahrvis Davenport and true freshman right tackle Marcus Minor both earned their first career starts last weekend at Michigan State. Minor became the second true freshman to start for the Terps this season, joining quarterback Kasim Hill, who started against both Towson and UCF earlier in the season. Junior wide receiver DJ Moore is looking to become just the third player in Maryland history to record 1,000 receving yards in a season, joining an illustrious list that includes only Marcus Badgett (1,240-1992) and Torrey Smith (1,055-2010). Moore s 1,927 career receiving yards ranks sixth in Maryland history. Maryland is one of four programs to win a game with three different starting quarterbacks this season, including Michigan, Louisiana-Lafayette and Houston. Quarterbacks Tyrrell Pigrome (Texas), Kasim Hill (Towson) and Max Bortenschlager (Minnesota, Indiana) have each won games this year for the Terps, with Bortenschlager throwing 10 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Senior wide receiver Taivon Jacobs has scored a touchdown in four of his last six games. Over his last three games, Jacobs has totaled 18 catches for 227 yards. It has been a spectacular season for Jacobs, who has posted single-season careerhighs in yards (520), receptions (43) and touchdowns (5). Jacobs brother, Levern, finished his career seventh in history with 130 catches, but never had five touchdown catches in a season. Sophomore running back Lorenzo Harrison has rushed for at least 50 yards in five consecutive weeks, including a seasonhigh 81 yards two weekends ago against Michigan. Harrison has totaled 322 rushing yards over his last five games (64.4 yds/g) after posting just 240 yards in the first six weeks (40.0/g) to open the season. Junior DJ Moore moved into fifth in Maryland career receptions with Darrius Heyward-Bey (138) after hauling in eight passes at Michigan State despite snowy conditions. Moore, who currently ranks third in single-season history with 72 catches, needs just six catches to break Geroy Simon s record of 77 catches set in 1994. Moore has received a catch from four different quarterbacks this season, and eight in his career. Junior DJ Moore is currently tied for the Big Ten Conference lead with eight touchdown catches. His eight touchdown catches (with three different quarterbacks) is tied for fourth-most in a single-season in program history with Dan Bungori (1971). Current Philadelphia Eagles receiver Torrey Smith is the all-time leader with 12. Moore also ranks fourth in Maryland history with 17 career touchdown receptions. The Terps have done well taking care of the ball in 2017, turning the ball over just 12 times through 11 games despite starting four different quarterbacks due to injury. Maryland s +4 turnover margin ranks second in the Big Ten Conference. Last season, Maryland committed 19 turnovers in 13 games and had a -7 turnover margin. Wide receiver DJ Moore currently leads the Big Ten Conference with a reception in 32 straight games. Remarkably, Moore has received a pass from eight different quarterbacks during the streak due to various injuries. The mark is the 13th-longest streak in the nation. By The Numbers ON THE DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS 0.36 The Terps rank second in the Big Ten Conference with a +0.36/g turnover margin (+4), having lost the turnover battle in just two of 10 games. Overall, the Terps have intercepted 10 passes and forced 12 fumbles (six lost) against just eight interceptions and four lost fumbles (16-12). Last season, the Terps lost the turnover battle, 19-12, over the course of 13 games. 4 Senior Jermaine Carter, Jr., forced his fourth fumble of the season against Michigan State last weekend. The mark ranks fourth nationally and tied for first in the Big Ten Conference. Carter is just the sixth Terrapin since 1987 to force four fumbles in a season, and the first since Sean Davis, who had five in 2015. 4 The Maryland defense is a perfect 4-0 this season when holding its opponents under 100 rushing yards (Texas, Towson, Minnesota, Indiana). Statisically, the Terps have improved immensely in the run defense category, from allowing 214.8 rushing yards/g in 2016 to 182.2/g in 2017. 6 Senior Jermaine Carter, Jr. has totaled 6.0 tackles for loss this season, including 2.0 TFLs in the win over Indiana recently. Carter now has 29.0 tackles for loss in his career, which ranks 13th in program history. Carter needs 3.0 more TFLs to crack Maryland s top-10 in the category. 8 Maryland s special teams unit is now ranked eighth in the country and ranks first in the Big Ten Conference with a 66.8 efficiency rating according to ESPN. Maryland currently leads the Big Ten and ranks 10th nationally with four blocked kicks this season. The Terps also rank in the top-4 in the Big Ten in both punt return average (11.2/r) and kick return average (23.2/r). 8.5 Sophomore Antoine Brooks, Jr. has been fantastic for the Terps on defense in his second season, leading the team in tackles for loss (8.5) and solo tackles (71). Brooks has starred at the nickelback position all season and has had a penchant for making big plays, including his blocked field goal touchdown return against Texas in the season-opener. 2 Senior linebacker Jermaine Carter, Jr. notched a season-high 12 tackles last weekend against Michigan State which brought him to 318 career tackles. He is the first Terp to record that many career tackles since Demetrius Hartsfield had 339 from 2009-12. Carter currently leads the team with 79 tackles. He is looking to become just the fifth Maryland player to lead the team in tackles in three consecutive seasons 1969, joining Alex Wujciak (2008-10), D Qwell Jackson (2003-05), E.J. Henderson (2000-02) and Ratcliff Thomas (1993-95). 576 Junior Ty Johnson currently ranks second in the Big Ten Conference with 576 total kick return yards. Johnson has largely been avoided as of late, returning just four kicks in the past five games. Johnson s returning prowess was highlighted by a 100-yard kickoff return against then-no. 10 Ohio State. DJ DURKIN Head Coach Bowling Green 01 2nd Year at Maryland The Maryland football program undoubtedly made great strides in 2016, its first year under the guidance of Head Coach DJ Durkin. The Terps doubled their win total from the prior season and garnered bowl eligibility in Durkin s first year in College Park. Regarded as one of the brightest young coaching minds in college football, Durkin was named the 36th head football coach in Maryland history on December 2, 2015. He quickly changed the culture and brought instant energy to the program. Durkin improved the results on the field as well. The Terps started the 2016 season 4-0 and won five of their first seven games, including a victory over Michigan State. After falling in three straight games to nationally-ranked teams, including a pair of matchups against Top 5 squads, Maryland defeated Rutgers, 31-13, in its season finale to garner bowl eligibility. Durkin guided Maryland to its 27th bowl game all-time when the Terps faced off against Boston College in the 2016 Quick Lane Bowl, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit. Durkin also showed his recruiting prowess by signing a consensus Top 20 class in 2017, which was his first full recruiting cycle. The class, which included 11 4-star signees and five members of the ESPN300, ranked among the best in program history. Durkin was able to land nine of the Top 20 players from the state of Maryland and three of the top nine players from Washington, D.C. Prior to arriving in College Park, Durkin served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Michigan, leading a nationally-renowned defensive unit that ranked fourth in the country. Under Durkin, the Wolverines limited opponents to 17.2 points per game in 2015, in addition to shutting out three consecutive opponents the longest such streak at Michigan in 35 years. Durkin was an outstanding recruiter in his time as an assistant. While at the University of Florida, Durkin helped land four straight top-11 recruiting classes and was named Rivals.com s 2012 Recruiter of the Year as a result. In total, Durkin contributed to the impressive recruitment of nine 5-star prospects on the defensive side during that stretch. Durkin s immediate impact in Ann Arbor was also displayed in player development. Michigan had nine defensive All-Big Ten honorees, including a pair of first team defensive backs: Jourdan Lewis and Jabril Peppers. In addition, three Wolverines (Ryan Glasgow, Lewis and Peppers,) were named semifinalists for national defensive awards in 2015. As the defensive coordinator at Florida from 2013-14, Durkin led the Gators to consecutive top-15 rankings in total defense with the 15th-best mark in the country in 2014 (329.0 ypg) and the eighth-best (314.2 ypg) in 2013. Florida s 2014 team finished the year ranked in the top-10 in the nation in yards allowed per play (4.45), yards allowed per rush attempt (3.16) and yards allowed per pass attempt (5.9). The group was highlighted by All-SEC first team selections Dante Fowler Jr., and defensive back Vernon Hargreaves, along with second-team all-conference honoree Antonio Morrison. Fowler was subsequently selected third overall in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. His selection continued a stretch in which Gator defensive players were selected in the first round of three consecutive drafts. In Durkin s first season as defensive coordinator, Florida finished first in the SEC and seventh in the country in pass defense (171.8 yards per game), sixth in first downs allowed (16.1 per game) and 15th in scoring defense (21.1 points per game), while allowing only 27 touchdowns, the sixth fewest in the nation in 2013. Durkin s coaching paid dividends at the next level when defensive tackle Dominique Easley was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. From 2010-2012, Durkin served as special team coordinator and linebackers coach at Florida and coached under current Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn. Once again, Durkin was a key contributor of a staff that helped produce an NFL first round pick when defensive tackle Shariff Floyd was taken in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. As linebackers coach, Durkin tutored Jon Bostic, who finished his career as a second-team All-SEC selection and was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears in 2013. Durkin s coaching on special teams helped produce punter Chas Henry, the winner of the Ray Guy Award in 2011, and kicker Caleb Sturgis, a two-time finalist for the Lou Groza Award who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. Under Durkin s tutelage, Stanford s defensive ends helped the Cardinal rank 11th nationally in sacks per game in 2007 and 2009.
