One Step At A Time The San Diego State women s basketball team heads into 2001-02 looking to build on its most successful season in over four years. Despite playing the majority of their games on the road, the Aztecs came within an eyelash of their first winning campaign since 1997. SDSU, which closed out 2001 with 13-15 mark, was just six seconds from finishing 15-13 as the Aztecs fell in the final seconds versus both UNLV, 68-67, and Colorado State, 55-54. Nevertheless, San Diego State s improvement over the past two seasons has been quite dramatic as the 2000-01 Aztecs won nearly twice as many games as they did in 98-99 and four more than in 99-00. Improvement By The Numbers If there is one word to characterize San Diego State s 2000-01 season it would be improved as the Aztecs reached a number of milestones in the Barb Smith era. Below are just a couple of those single-season milestones. 13 - Most victories in a season (13) 8 - Most non-conference wins in a season (8) 6 - Longest winning streak (6) 5 - Most conference wins in a season (5) 5 - Most non-home wins in a season (5) 4 - Longest home winning streak (4) Aztecs Also MWC s Most Improved Team Last Season San Diego State s improvement during 2000-01 may have been best reflected in the national ratings percentage index (RPI) as the Aztecs made one of the nation s biggest jumps and the largest move up in the entire Mountain West Conference. SDSU closed out 2000-01 ranked No. 134 in the RPI, improvement of 95 spots over its ranking of 229 in 1999-00. The MWC s next most improved team was Wyoming, which jumped 79 spots from No. 228 in 2000 to No. 149 in 01. Back Again San Diego State returns eight letterwinners, including four starters and its top four scorers from the 2000-01 campaign. Heading the list is second-team all- Mountain West Conference selection junior guard Jamey Cox. The Aztecs leading scorer for the past two seasons, Cox has a real shot at becoming SDSU s first 1,000-point scorer since Jodi Nowlin-Tres in 1997. She enters 2001-02 with 658 points. Other returning starters include senior guard Claire Swinbank, and senior forwards Atim Otii and Tanisha Knight. Swinbank and Otii were the only Aztecs to start all 28 games a year ago, while Knight, who made 17 starts, scored in double figures 12 times and finished the season second on the team in scoring. Three other players who also saw significant playing time also return. Forward/center Nicolette McCartny, a 13-game starter as a true freshman a year ago, returns for her sophomore campaign, while guard/forward Missy Schomaker and center Morgan Vargas are also back. A Veteran Crew San Diego State s fortunes should also be bolstered by experience as the Aztecs return the most experience team of the Barb Smith era. Of the 13 players listed on SDSU s preseason roster, 10 are either seniors or juniors, while just three are freshmen or sophomores. Of the 10 upperclassmen, eight have played at the Division I level. Two players are junior college transfers. Senior Atim Otii, a third-team all- Mountain West selection in 2000-01, is the only Aztec to start every game over the past two seasons. Moving On San Diego State will be without the services of five players who were listed on the Aztec roster a year ago. Heading the list are a trio of four-year letterwinners in Anita Bundage, Shannon Lee and Sophia Sledge. Bundage leaves San Diego State as one of the Aztecs all-time leading rebounders. The Conroe, Texas, native grabbed 566 caroms during her career, including a high of 184 as a junior. Lee dished out 302 assists during her time on Montezuma Mesa to rank No. 6 all time. Sledge also etched her name in the SDSU archives and leaves as the school s No. 3 three-point shooter with 78 for her career. Also among those not returning are Australian Nicole Bemi-Morrison and walk-on Carmen Gonzalez. Noting the Newcomers San Diego State inked four newcomers during 2000-01 s two signing periods. Maggie Sauls (Borger, Texas) and Heather Wolf (Stayton, Ore.), a pair of high school guards, signed during the early period, while junior college forwards Valencia Howard (Richmond, Calif.) and Ashonda Williams (Crockett, Calif.) committed during the spring. Sauls, a scorer who was a member of numerous all-conference, region and district teams in the Texas panhandle, stands 5-9 and projects as two Senior Tanisha Knight guard. Wolf, a two-time conference player of the year as well as a 2A all-state selection, is 5-6 and scored in double figures in 11 straight games to open the 2000-01 campaign. will most likely run at the point. Howard and Williams played together at Contra Costa Junior College in Richmond, Calif. Both are forwards, however their styles are completely different. Howard is more of an inside force and will battle for playing time at the four spot. Williams, a small forward, is perhaps the best offensive signing of the Barb Smith era as the junior to be scored over 1,200 points during her JC career and led the state in three-pointers made as a sophomore. Aztecs On The All Teams San Diego State placed two players on the Mountain West s all-conference team and three on the league s all-academic squad. Jamey Cox and Atim Otii were named to the 2001 Mountain West Conference all-league team by the conference s coaches. Cox, a 2000 all-newcomer selection, was a second-team choice, while Otii was a third-team selection. Sophia Sledge, Claire Swinbank and Morgan Vargas were all named to the Mountain West Conference 2001 all-academic team. To be eligible, a studentathlete must have completed at least one academic term, maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and have been a starter or significant contributor. What s On Tap: The 2001-02 Schedule After hosting just five non-conference games in Cox Arena a year ago and playing eight on the road, San Diego State s women s basketball schedule will do a literal 180-degree turn in 2001-02, as the Aztecs will enjoy eight pre-conference home dates during the upcoming season. The biggest change, beside having three additional home games, is that for the first time in three seasons, San Diego State will not host a Thanksgiving weekend tournament. Instead, the Aztecs will host Navy on Nov. 23rd and UC San Diego on Nov. 25th. The season opens with a home game against Cal Poly on Nov. 16th. A match-up with NCAA Tournament participant Texas Christian at the TCU Tournament, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, and a tough contest at Creighton Dec. 22 highlight the road portion of the slate. The Aztecs also travel north to the Bay Area to face Pacific-10 Conference foe California in a rematch of a game SDSU won, 63-49, last year in Cox Arena. Overall, just four of the 13 non-mountain West teams (Cal Poly, California, San Jose State, Portland State) appeared on last season s schedule. San Diego State was 3-1 in those games. The Aztecs open Mountain West Conference action with three straight road contests, including the league opener at UNLV on Jan. 12th. The conference tournament is March 6-9 in Las Vegas, Nev. Preseason Notes 2001-02 Women s Basketball Prospectus 3

Coaching Staff Head Coach Barb Smith 4 2001-02 Women s Basketball Prospectus an Diego State head coach Barb Smith enters her fifth season on Montezuma SMesa and owns a career record of 39-68 (.364). After getting out to a tough start, Smith got the Aztecs pointed back in the right direction in 2000-01, posting a number of milestones of her SDSU tenure, including most wins (13), most conference wins (5), most non-conference wins (8), most road wins (5) and longest winning streak (6). Smith, 37, was named to the post on May 2, 1997, and is just the fifth women's basketball coach in the 26-year history of the sport at SDSU. Through four seasons now, the Smith-led Aztecs have seen plenty of improvements, both on and off the court women's basketball had the highest average team GPA at SDSU during the 1998-99 academic year, for example. SDSU has also produced some significant victories under Smith's guidance, including wins over California and Oregon State of the Pacific-10 Conference, Kansas State of the Big 12 and a sweep of conference rival Colorado State a postseason participant each of the last two years last season. Smith has also developed a pair of second-team all- Mountain West Conference honorees in Mary Apiafi (2000) and Jamey Cox (2001) as well as two conference all-newcomer team selections Cox (2000) and Claire Swinbank (1999) during her tenure on Montezuma Mesa. A native of Perrysburg, Ohio, Smith came to San Diego State from Colorado, where she spent nine seasons as the Buffaloes' top assistant and recruiting coordinator. During that time, she helped build CU into one of the nation's top programs. In only her first season at Colorado in 1988-89, Smith helped lead the Buffs to a landmark 14-0 Big 8 season and the school's first league tournament title. CU would go on to win four more conference championships during her stint in Boulder, posting victories at a 77-percent clip en route to a 217-65 overall record an average of over 24 wins a season. The Buffs were also no strangers to the NCAA Tournament or the national rankings during her tenure at Colorado. CU earned bids to the big dance eight times, including the 1994 and 95 campaigns when the Buffaloes ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation. In 1996-97, the Buffs finished the season with a 23-9 overall record, won the inaugural Big 12 Tournament championship and advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament. Smith developed a reputation as an outstanding recruiter while at Colorado, securing some of the nation's top prep players. In her last four years at CU, three of the school's recruiting classes were ranked in the top 10 nationally, including the third best class in 1996. In addition to her recruiting duties at Colorado, Smith also assisted in scouting, conditioning and coaching guard play, and was instrumental in the development of CU's first Kodak All- American, point guard Shelley Sheetz, in 1995. Active on the national scene with the Women's Basketball Coaching Association, Smith is in the middle of a twoyear term on the WBCA Board of Directors. She also oversees the WBCA's Coach of the Year committee. A 1986 graduate of Ohio State with a B.S. in health education, Smith was a walk-on with the Buckeyes' 1982-83 team, then coached by Tara VanDerveer. By the end of the season, she had earned a starting role at point guard and a scholarship for the remainder of her eligibility. At 5-5, she was the smallest player in the Big Ten Conference but still managed to lead the Buckeyes to four league titles and three NCAA appearances, including the 1985 East Regional final and the 86 Mideast Regional semifinals. Smith was also a member of the Dean's List all four years at OSU and graduated "cum laude." Smith began her coaching career in 1987 as a graduate assistant at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., while earning her master's degree in business administration. She assumed the assistant position at Colorado two years later. In her 18 years as a player and a coach, Smith has experienced 11 seasons with at least 20 wins and only six sub-.500 campaigns. T Steve Huber 3 rd Season Assistant Coach Illinois State 82 he 2001-02 season marks Steve Huber s 20th year of collegiate coaching and third year as a member of Barb Smith s staff at San Diego State University. A technician on the court, Huber s primary responsibility is the Aztecs post players, an area in which he has already made a huge impact. In just two seasons at SDSU, he has coached a pair of Aztecs to all-conference honors. Mary Apiafi earned second team all-mountain West Conference accolades in 2000, while Atim Otii was a third-team allleague choice in 2001. The duo are the first frontcourt players at SDSU to earn postseason honors since Jodi Nowlin-Tres earned first-team all-western Athetic Conference in 1997. Off the court, Huber is involved in both scouting and recruiting. Named to the post on May 4, 1999, Huber came to Montezuma Mesa from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., where he engineered one of the nation s most dramatic turnarounds as the school s head women's basketball coach from 1994-99. During his tenure at Benedictine, Huber built a program that had posted just 10 wins from 1991-94, including an 0-25 record mark during the 1993-94 season, into one that won over 100 games (108-55 [.663]) over the next five years.
