ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION REGION I DIRECTOR S MESSAGE I have just returned from Denver after attending my first Board of Director s meeting as your Region One Director. It is quite a responsibility to represent you and to do what is best for the Region, the Arabian Horse Association, and of course the Arabian Horse. One of the most important issues which we dealt with is the location of future US National Horse Shows. AHA sent out 14 Requests for Proposals across the United States and received four responses from venues. The recommendation of the U.S. National Show Commission was Tulsa. The Board of Directors reviewed these responses and concluded that Tulsa was the best venue based on central location, safety and affordability, continuous yearly improvements, financial support, and the willingness to solve footing issues. The vote to proceed with a contract with Tulsa was unanimous except for one abstention. The Board motion made last year to add an additional $25,000 to the Youth budget was clarified so that there is no question that it is a yearly thing. In addition, it was restated that any funds remaining in the Youth Budget at the end of the year will roll over to the next year. This is good news for the AHA Youth and their future programs. You will find a list of the dates for the National competitions this year listed in the newsletter. One important thing to note is that Canadian Nationals has been moved up a week earlier than originally planned. They have secured this time slot for the next three years. You will also find a list of questions from the Competition Advisory Committee in regards to lifetime qualifications. They want our input. A discussion was held in regards to club shows putting AHA on their insurance policies as additional named insured. This has been referred to committee so that they may investigate cost but this is something which may affect our shows. The Purebred Arabian Trust has agreed to pay for one third of the cost of a new web site for AHA. It is felt that the site needs to be upgraded and made more user friendly. It will take 6 to nine months for phase one from the contract date. The Market Development and Promotion Committee is looking to introduce a new riding stable data base. The plan is to have it under the education tab on the web site under learning to ride. It will provide vital information to potential new people to the horse industry directing them where to go to be involved in horses providing, for example, a list of riding stables. There are some new classes which have been added to our National shows. These can be found on the AHA web site or in information emails being sent out by AHA. One of the best things at this Board meeting was the opportunity to interact with our Youth at the luncheon Saturday. They were in Denver having their Youth meeting and we met for lunch. Region One had two representatives in Denver. Lauren Sussman, our Region One Youth Director and Haley Harrington, the AHYA Vice President. We are well represented and all of our Youth are members we can be proud of. The first show in Region One, Sierra Empire, was a success. I was able to attend the show and also the Region One Youth meeting that was held at the show. The feel of the show was a busy and competitive one and definitely was a good sign for the horse industry. Congratulations to the Sierra Empire Club for a great show. We are hard at work on the Region One Championship show in Del Mar held May 30 th through June 3 rd. Please consider being a class sponsor and help your Region. You will find a sponsorship form included in the newsletter. Also, try to come down to beautiful Del Mar and watch some wonderful classes. Finally, our next Region One Meeting is Saturday, April 14 th in Temecula. The meeting is open to all. You do not need to be a delegate to attend. Consider coming and seeing how the nuts and bolts of a region work. Just make sure you contact Mimi Gaffey, who is listed in the newsletter, and make reservations. I hope to see many of you there. Region 1 Directory Barb DuBois There was discussion on how to organize the directory either by club or alphabetically. It was suggested we use the same printing person Region 4 & 5 uses for their Directory. It is a good size, spiral binding and good text size. We will provide leads and she will pursue advertisers. Price includes the mailing of a directory to each member. This is an in house operation and if she can t get enough advertisers, we have the option on continuing or opting out. Need about 25 ads and if covers are colored the cost would be more for those ads. There was discussion about how to bring down the cost of the ads so local trainers could afford to participate. Cost is estimated at $6,500 and she takes 20% of all advertising rates. We expect to order 750 copies. Barb DuBois will be the coordinator on the project. Region I, March, 2012 My name is Lauren Sussman and I am proud to be the new Region 1 Youth Director for 2012. Horses are my passion, I began riding when I was nine years old, and have been an avid competitor and lover of Arabian horses. Their true beauty and intelligence inspire me and teach me every day, I can honestly say that these horses have changed my life. I ride with Kim Arranaga and own three horses, where I ride hunter pleasure, western pleasure, equitation, dressage, horsemanship, and sidesaddle. I decided to join AHYA simply because I wanted to get involved, and make a difference. Currently, I am working with members of the AHA board to try and get more walk- trot classes added at the local and regional level for people who are over ten years old, but are not ready to canter in the show ring yet. Also, for the region 1 youth, an equitation clinic will be help with an open equitation judge for all the youth to attend. More details on the clinic will continue to come on the region 1 youth facebook page (if you are not currently a member, be sure to add the page!). Lastly, my position is to represent the youth, therefore if anyone has a comment, idea, suggestion, or even simply wants to meet others in the region, don t hesitate to reach me! Thank you and I look forward to the upcoming show year! Lauren Sussman laurenasussman@aol.com Region I Scholarship Offered The Region One Scholarship is open to Seniors in High School and college students that are active in a club within Region One. Region I, March, 2012 Sierra Empire Arabian Horse Association Annual Show A Success! The Sierra Empire Arabian Horse Association annual show was held January 27-29, at Fairplex in Pomona.. The beautiful weather, the number of entries increasing for the third year in a row and the highest quality of horses seen in over a decade, contributed to the great success of this show. There was a full slate of classes, some with as many as 18 competitors, judged by Jane Brown, from Oregon. Among the winners were Jacqueline Phan of Temecula, who rode Valerian Fantasy + to the Adult Amateur High Point awarad, and Kristy Shiota of Chino Hills, riding ROL Cymply Hot ++ to the Junior High Point award. The Judges Choice Award went to Darlin Lil, a Half-Arabian trail horse, ridden by Lou Roper for owner Susan Cavanagh of Bakersfield. This was a USEF A rated show and served as a qualifying event for Region 1, Pacific Slopes, Youth Canadian and U.S. National Championships.
