AMERICAN JAKE GAGNE 2010 RED BULL MOTOGP ROOKIES CUP CHAMP American Jake Gagne won the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup by finishing second to Danny Kent in a fantastic close to the 2010 season. Daijiro Hiura, the 16-year-old Japanese rider, finished third in both the final race and championship. Seventeen-year-old Californian Gagne started from the third row of the grid, while 16-year-old Kent was on the pole, but Gagne launched into fifth almost from the start, finishing the first lap in fourth place with Kent leading. Gagne had gone into the race with an 11-point advantage over Kent, and while the Briton clearly had the pace to win he soon realized he needed to also influence what happened behind as Gagne moved into third on lap two behind 17-year-old Australian Josh Hook. 4 5

In a string of masterful moves, Kent slowed down the race so others could join the battle and hopefully push Gagne deeper into the pack. It worked as Hiura, Alessio Cappella, Kevin Calia, Daniel Ruiz, Brad Binder and Harry Stafford all joined the battle at the front. I realized what he was trying to do, said Gagne. He s clever and he needed to try to get the other guys between us. I just kept my head down and knew that as long as I was close to him I had a good chance of getting the points I needed. It was an incredible championship win after a tough weekend for Gagne, whose engine stopped in the first qualifying session, forcing him to ride his backup bike in the second session. It just didn t feel right, and I couldn t do better than 10th in the second session. They put a good engine in my bike for the race, and that was a lot better. I wasn t too worried. I was pretty sure that if I made a good start I could run with the guys and do what I needed to take the Cup. Final Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Standings 1. Jacob Gagne (USA) 170 points 2. KURTCASELLI WORCS DOWN TO THE WIRE RICKYDIETRICH After sweeping rounds seven and eight of the 2010 World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS) at Olympia, WA, FMF/KTM s Kurt Caselli overtook Monster Energy Kawasaki s Ricky Dietrich in the series points and moved into the numberone spot. Caselli finished second at the round-nine event held in Devore, CA, and with only six points separating the pair with one round remaining, the battle for the 2010 WORCS title has come down to the wire. Finishing on every podium this season, the determined Caselli is racking up wins when it counts the most, taking back-toback victories at Straddleline ORV Park aboard his Dunlopequipped KTM race machine. Dietrich went into round seven ahead in the points but was unable to match the KTM rider s performance, finishing runner-up at both round seven and eight and third at Glen Helen Raceway aboard his Dunlop-shod KX450F. FMF/KTM s Mike Brown took his second victory of the season at round nine and is third overall in points as the series reaches its climax. Caselli leads the series points standings with 201, Dietrich trails by six on 195 and Brown holds down third overall with 171. SCHWANTZ LEADS THE RIDE FOR KIDS LAP OF CHAMPIONS AT INDY GP Racing legend Kevin Schwantz led more than 100 riders at the Ride for Kids Lap of Champions during the Red Bull Indianapolis GP on August 29. The annual parade lap at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway raised $24,000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF). The event attracted riders from the U.S. and Canada. The grand prize, a custom-painted Honda CBR600RR donated by Deal s Gap Motorcycle Resort, went to Ralph and Bonnie Cole of Cleveland. Schwantz signed the bike for the delighted couple. Deal s Gap owner Brad Talbott was the event s top fundraiser, earning him a custom-made riding suit from Aerostich. Other drawing prizes included gear from Lap of Champions PAT COCCIADIFERRO sponsors AGV, Cardo Scala Rider, Dainese, Olympia Moto Sports, Sidi, Tour Master and Dunlop Tires. The total raised was boosted by the auction of a helmet signed by Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Colin Edwards and Ben Spies. Randy and Sherri Sautner of Cruise Missile Custom Cycles donated the helmet, which went for $4,250. The Indy event capped off a huge fundraising month for the RFK. Ride for Kids events across the country raised more than $550,000 in August alone to fund the fight against pediatric brain tumors. The 450th RFK event fittingly took place at the RFK headquarters in Ashville, NC, and attracted 630 riders who raised an astonishing $117,822. Dunlop is proud to be a part of this great cause. DUNLOP HELPS USA WIN 2010 MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS 10 11

For decades, Dunlop has proudly supported an international field of racers at the annual Motocross of Nations competition, and in 2010 that support helped the three-man team from the USA ride their Dunlop-equipped race machines to the overall win and the coveted Chamberlain Trophy. This victory at the 64th running of the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations in Denver, CO, by Ryan Dungey (Rockstar Makita Suzuki), Trey Canard (GEICO Powersports Honda) and Andrew Short (Honda Red Bull Racing) marks the 21st time that the United States has captured the overall win and it also marks the sixth title in a row for Team USA. In all, 32 countries fielded teams for this year s hotly contested event. RYANDUNGEY The American onslaught began with Saturday s qualifying races, where Canard and Short secured class victories and Dungey finished a strong fourth. The first of Sunday s three races began with the MX1 and MX2 riders, including Dungey and Canard, respectively. As the race flagged off Dungey launched off to a mid-pack start and soon took the lead position in the race and he parlayed that success into the race win. Meanwhile, Canard found himself tangled up in a first-turn pile-up that relegated him to the rear of the pack, but he remounted and pushed his way forward to finish a laudable 12th. The next race featured Short and the other Open class riders, along with the MX2 group once again. This time Short blasted away to the holeshot, but then he and New Zealand s Ben Townley tangled; Short went down and his bike suffered a broken clutch lever. Still, he remounted to salvage 13th place in the race while Canard managed a strong seventhplace showing. Going into the final race of the day featuring MX1 and Open class riders, Team USA trailed Germany in overall points, with Belgium following close behind. However, as soon as the starting gate fell virtually all questions about the final outcome were dispelled; Short took the holeshot again with Dungey in close pursuit and they both showed commanding speed. Later in the moto Dungey took over the lead position from Short and they closed out the race in that order, 1-2, to earn the overall win handily. Belgium made enough ground to finish second overall, Germany took third, and Great Britain missed the podium by a single point. 12 13

TONIELIAS 20 21

The Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix played host to the first Moto2 event in the United States on August 29, 2010, and this much-heralded new class provided an intense level of competition witnessed by nearly 63,000 spectators. Moto2 was created to replace the 250 Grand Prix class and provide a new World Championship category offering exciting racing for the fans and a valid stepping-stone to MotoGP for the riders. Conceived as a prototype class using 600cc four-stroke engines, Moto2 features two radical innovations: control engines and control tires. Each rider is allocated a sealed engine from a pool of identical Honda units based on the CBR600RR. Only the fuel and oil provided by the official fuel supplier can be used. Each rider also rolls on Dunlop control tires, and must choose from a total of 16 slicks (combined front and rear) for each weekend of racing. So far this season the Moto2 class has exceeded expectations, with incredibly tight racing that has resulted in five different winners in 10 races. At Indy, a huge field of 40 riders fought for the top qualifying spots, and the importance of a good grid position was told by the qualifying times: Less than a second separated the top 23 riders on the grid, with Spanish rider Julian Simon taking his first pole of the season. American wild-card entries Jason DiSalvo and Roger Lee Hayden were both chucked into the deep end of this shark pool, and they ultimately fared well: DiSalvo finished ninth, and Hayden limped home 17th despite being caught in a first-turn pileup that damaged his American Honda MD600 machine. But it was championship points-leader Toni Elias who walked away with the Indy win his fifth so far this season followed by Simon and then Scott Redding. Elias, who suffered from a high fever all weekend, suffered doubly in the sweltering Indy heat. I tried to save what little energy I had for the last five laps, said Elias. Tires were once again consistent, and the fact that I set my fastest lap of the race on the last one confirms this. DUNLOP HELD A MOTO2 PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE INDY GP. DUNGEY,CANARD AND PATTERSON 2010 MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONS After dominating the Motocross series all season long, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki s Ryan Dungey has won the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship aboard his Dunlop-equipped RM-Z450. Winning 10 of the 12 rounds that comprise the 450-class championship, including racking up 19 moto wins, Dungey became the first premier-class rookie to win both the AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross titles. Monster Energy Kawasaki s Chad Reed pulled off the opening 450-class round win at Hangtown, but from there Dungey went on to dominate the following nine rounds until Honda Red Bull Racing s Kevin Windham put a stop to his win streak at Steel City aboard his Dunlop-shod CRF450R. Looking to break Ricky Carmichael s rookie record of nine overall wins that had stood since the 2000 season, Dungey went into the final round ready to set a new all-time record. Having wrapped up the 450-class title at round 10, the talented racer successfully pulled off the moto sweep to surpass Carmichael s rookie point total by eight points, ending the season with a record 543 markers. 24 25

TREYCANARD 28 29

In the 250 competition, GEICO Powersports Honda s Trey Canard raced his Dunlop-shod Honda CRF250R to victory in the 250-class championship after a spectacular late charge in the series. The first four rounds welcomed four different overall winners. GEICO Powersports Honda s Eli Tomac scored a career-first overall win in his rookie season at the opening round, while Monster Energy Kawasaki s Christophe Pourcel came out on top the following week. Teammates Tyla Rattray and Dean Wilson each clinched first-ever overall victories aboard their Dunlop-fitted KX250Fs before Canard went on a four-round win streak. Rattray broke Canard s run of wins at the 10th round, but the following week the Honda racer was back on top taking his fifth overall victory. Pourcel had a seven-point lead on Canard going into the final round, but a hard crash in the first moto took the Kawasaki racer out of the championship equation when he was injured and not able to race moto two. Wilson went on to win the round, but Canard s third overall gave him the title win. TYLARATTRAY DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha s Jessica Patterson took victory in the 2010 AMA Women s Motocross Championship aboard her Dunlop-equipped YZ250F. Patterson won six of the eight rounds in the series but was kept honest by the defending Women s champion Honda Red Bull Racing s Ashley Fiolek. Aboard her Dunlop-shod CRF250R, Fiolek battled up front to clinch six moto wins, while Patterson won 10 motos. The Yamaha racer s consistency round after round rewarded her with her sixth Women s Motocross title. 24 31

DUNLOP SPORTMAX Q2 At Dunlop, no sportbike tire is ready for the road until it is racetrack-proven. This maxim has never held more true than with the Sportmax Q2, featuring Dunlop s Intuitive Response Profile (IRP) and MT Multi-Tread technology. This remarkably effective high-performance sporting tire incorporates many race-tested advancements, that add up to a superior street-going tire that is equally at home on the track. The Sportmax Q2 draws upon sophisticated technology and construction advances that Dunlop has gleaned from the track, which were then refined for street use. With its new IRP technology in the rear tire, the Q2 possesses steering characteristics unlike any other sport tire made. It intuitively allows the rider greater latitude in line choice while cornering and provides amazingly linear steering at all lean angles. The Sportmax Q2 provides enhanced grip and handling because this new profile puts down a bigger footprint at extreme lean angles, while also allowing greater lean angles and higher corner speeds. 40 41

As a matter of fact, the Sportmax Q2 is so good it recently won a tire comparison test of its own, one conducted by Ultimate Motorcycling magazine. In an on-track comparison test of the best high-performance sportbike tires in the business, the Sportmax Q2 emerged as the clear winner. The test conclusion said in part, The Dunlop Sportmax Q2 maintained its line through corners, turned most predictably, handled bumps well, and gave good feedback in all situations. Additionally, the Q2s showed the least wear at the end of the day. The Q2 was a little faster than its closest competitor, an undeniably important statistic for performance tires, but most importantly it was the tire that gave the testers the most confidence. By both subjective and objective standards, the Dunlop Sportmax Q2 is our clear winner. In addition to Dunlop s IRP and MT technologies, the carcass construction enhances steering response in the front tire and increases cornering stability in both tires. The rear tire has stiffer overall construction to meet high-performance demands and provide a more consistent contact patch and reduced carcass distortion. Also, Dunlop s advanced Multi- Tread technology begets a street tire that combines the benefits of a tough, long-wearing center compound for increased mileage with a special lateral grip compound on each shoulder for superior cornering traction. It all adds up to tires with a direct racing lineage tuned for superior performance on the street while also delivering excellent track-day capabilities. In short, Dunlop has melded the best of track and street capabilities all into one tire: the Sportmax Q2. 2010 AMA PRO ROAD RACING CHAMPIONS The 2010 AMA Pro Road Racing Series came to a close at the final round, held at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL. In damp weather conditions, Josh JOSHHAYES 2010 AMERICAN SUPERBIKE CHAMPION Hayes, Martin Cardenas, Austin DeHaven, Tyler O Hara and Danny Eslick took top honors in their respective classes aboard Dunlop-equipped race machines and were crowned 2010 champions. 44 45

Hayes double race victory aboard his Team Graves Yamaha in the American SuperBike competition at the penultimate round at New Jersey Motorsports Park extended his lead in the championship to 22 points. At the final round it was Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammates Tommy Hayden and Blake Young who took victory Hayden s fifth win and Young s third win of the season but Hayes seven race wins during the series plus his second- and seventh-place finishes at Barber were good enough to secure him his first-ever American SuperBike Championship. The 2010 SuperBike series showcased spectacular racing all season long with six different racers recording wins during the 10 rounds of racing. In addition to Hayes, Hayden and Young winning races, National Guard Jordan Suzuki s Jake Zemke twice finished on top and Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing Ducati s Larry Pegram and Pat Clark Motorsports Ben Bostrom each recorded wins. Cardenas successfully won his first-ever AMA Pro Daytona SportBike title after racking up nine wins over the course of the season, including one at New Jersey Motorsports Park and both races at Barber. GEICO Powersports Suzuki s Eslick took three wins during the season and led the series points heading into the final round, but Cardenas moved into the lead after winning race one at Barber. The M4 Monster Energy Suzuki racer s solid results late in the series, including a perfect sweep of the final round, put him eight points in front of last year s champion Eslick, who finished runner-up. Team Graves Yamaha rider Josh Herrin recorded five race wins to round out the season in third place. With Rockwall Performance Yamaha s J.D. Beach winning the AMA Pro SuperSport Series East Division Championship and DNA Energy Drink CNR Motorsports Joey Pascarella wrapping up the West Division Championship, the seasonending doubleheader SuperSport event determined the AMA Pro SuperSport Young Gun and Top Gun National Champions. The Young Guns class featured 16- to 21-year-old riders on motorcycles with limited modifications, and the Top Guns class gave riders with an Expert License from a recognized road racing organization the opportunity to compete under the halo of a full AMA Pro Road Racing event. Race two s winner Beach found himself in the same predicament after he failed to finish the day before. In the end, DeHaven raced his Austin DeHaven Racing Yamaha to second- and fourth-place finishes, which awarded him the Young Gun title. O Hara s hard work aboard his GP Bike Parts Radio Medics Yamaha delivered ninth- and seventh-place finishes, earning him the title of Top Gun Champion.
